The Party and the Pickle: Understanding CCM's Vulnerability Towards General Elections 2015

The Party and the Pickle: Understanding CCM's Vulnerability Towards General Elections 2015

Mzee Mwanakijiji , Lowassa is only a threat inside CCM, outside CCM few will have any reason to be associated with him. Yes he does command an impressive following of party cadres, but this is simply because he somehow managed to get his "friends" to finance this association.

But, this is possible only within CCM. Outside CCM, he will need to have a message to sell, and i don't see any. If he goes against his party, then we both know what CCM will unleash. A massive coordinating attack towards a Man they will blame for all their illness. Makongoro has climbed to the highest order in of the aspirants by simply being blunt. Imagine if each and every CCM bigwig decides to be blunt, even those with shoddy ties. Lowassa, is not that good a politician/public speaker to counter the party machinery.

And most importantly, large percentage of voters are poor, not well off, which means a candidate selling the Ujamaa and "unyerere" policy will easily win the hearts and minds of majority of Tanzanians who never really got to benefit under the recently embraced capitalist policies.

Capitalism never intends to uplift the entire society, that's not the fabric of how it's made. NO one ever wins an election by promising more rich people, its simply does not work, even in the first world country. We saw that in Greece, the US, UK etc. As much as people love getting rich, those who do are actually a very tiny part of any society. Lowassa can get the votes of all middle income, and upper income voters and still lose an election. The elections are won by the lower class, and this is the class CCM needs to curate the message for them this time around, and unfortunately, Lowassa and his army of suspiciously rich cadres, simply do confuse this message.

I am 100% sure Lowassa will not get the nomination, I am also 90% sure either of the two, Makongoro/Ramadhani, will be our president come next year. Why?the message to win an election lies with them. CCM publicized itself about "kujivua Gamba" operation before, but this is the year, it has to go through with it to actually win an election.

If JK won without Lowassa and Mtandao help, and on the backdrop of huge baggage mafisadi had on him, Makongoro/Ramadhani can easily win by simply offering a clean state of back to principles and new hopes to the bearers of CCM flag (farmers and workers).

The only complication that might get into this ticket is If CCM gets cold feet and decides to add a woman in the seat, of which Asha Rose Migiro, could easily become a black horse and scoop either the VP nomination of the Nomination itself. However as things goes, Ramadhani running and any VP(Asha/Mwandosya/Bilal/) or Makongoro running and Ramadhani as VP is about the surest way for CCM to get the votes.

Mwandosya and Makongoro are important for CCM because of the massive voter base they command. While Ramadhani, is important for the outward picture that CCM want's to portray, although with careful Opposition, this picture could backfire.since a carefully calibrated opposition message that his party affiliation was blurry during his tenure as CJ could cause some damage. BUT you do realize you are on the winning side, when the only negative thing about your candidate is an assumption of association.

To me Laigwanani has come to his own driven political failure.

A hot spearhead which can be used by CCM to chop-out Laigwanan's political soul is a political parties register-Justice Mutungi.

If Justice Mutungi by evidence -gives allegations of Mr.Lagwanani to have conducted pre-mature campaigns, then the business of Laigwanani will be over as his eligibility to participate in this year's presidential election in whatsoever party shall have been ended.
Is this the responsibility of the Registrar of Political party or NEC?

I appreciate the fact that you have spent a lot of time in JF supporting a progressive change in Tanzania

You've also leveled some discouragements in the aftermath that has made me understand more how unhappy you are with CDM after 2010, however I do think we have larger goal to at least fix and try out the opposition. It seems Zitto moving out of CDM also like many others disappointed you and the subsequent controversial results of all that.

Nevertheless, there are good things that have happened in CDM after 2010, we now have for the first time in our history four opposition parties including CDM working together for a major goal. We do have the ruling party that has made little progress and cost us developments and also wants to continue to rule.

I think we should not hold on the past disappointments and miss the future responsibility, because after all the government is of the people, for the people and by the people.

We are three moths away from the general election, CDM is not working alone in this, there are other three political parties and CDM is not making all the decisions.

I was unhappy with CDM immediately after 2010 elections, they kept making wrong decision after wrong decisions, They simply went into, We are boss mode. They became more arrogant than CCM. refer to the KUB debacle.

Good thing is every sensible person in JF saw the trend. NO one helped CDM in 2010 more than JF, but you won't believe how CDM leaders suddenly decided they were bigger than JF.

About Zitto Debacle, i was one of the very few opposers of this nonsense to kick people out just because you disagree with their motive and idea. I have always called bluff on the whole "msaliti" premise as nothing than empty rhetoric designed to shield certain powerbases. Was i wrong?unfortunately i wasn't.

When we adviced CDM to contain Zitto and sincerely listen to his rebelious ideas, we were abused as usual by Bavicha troops. What happened. Zitto Jumpshiped to another party, and now CDM have to fight two fronts. they are losing MP seats even before election and they have removed posibility of winning some of the seats simply by virtue of not having stronghold in some areas.

Mbowe and Slaa decided, their positions were more important than a strong CDM, ofcourse Zitto decided the same. BUT, when you look at the age of the two sides, we expected the older side to have more vision and less rebellion. Well, ego got too big on both sides.

As for UKAWA, we both know who is riding the boat, and again CDM leaders have started showing all the elements that cause the fallout with Zitto. They have completely decided to stay quite of senseless noises like the ones saying Dr.Slaa must be THE OPPOSITION flag bearer come what may. What do you think, NCCR, CUF and others are going to feel? if we put politics aside, it's obvious Lipumba and Slaa, Lipumba was always going to be the more qualified and Slaa the more popular. Yet they decided to go the more popular route. The same problem and issue we had with CCM in 2005.

We expected CDM to have a clear msg regarding government spending and cut down in useless spening, yet they conspicuously go quite whenever something regarding their own pockets are raise. Things like 230M debacle, misuse of Ruzuku, etc etc..., How can you seriously call out CCM for misuse of resources yet you have Lissu stand out and write a long useless article defending 230M?
Call me a cynic, but its CDM shooting itself in the foot here...,

TEKNOLOJIA

As i saw in the Local elections, CCM got 75% of the votes, which means they have a solid enough base, as much as i like CCM to be replaced,i am not naive to think UKAWA/CDM or any opposition will actually win the general election. Kama unabisha waambie CDM wampendekeze Slaa, bila clause ya kulipwa mshahara wa Mbunge akishindwa kama atakubali.
Those figures may not be the situation on ground. And as TEKNOLOJIA stated our people do not look at issues aw the basis of their choice. If it was so CCM would not be winning by now!

CCM is at cross road, the fate lies within the hands of the current chairman, JK.

Thanks Mzee Mwanakijiji for the eye opening analysis...
By the end of CCM's nominations on 12th July there would be more than 2 splitter groups within the dying party....
And by the end of the General Elections; the old crippling party will be no more..!!
We have experienced in many wards and constituencies that opposition wins not because they have strong candidates but because the dying ruling party is split....
This time round at a presidential level the chances are high that the opposition is going to win not that they are well prepared but because of the divisions within the dying old party...CCM die hards will turn and angrily cast votes to the opposition as they are known to be doing once their candidates are ruled out by the top CCM's decision makers..

..what we r observing now seems like a repeat of ccm presidential primaries of 1995.

..lowassa was "unfairly" removed from ccm's nomination process and the party had a very difficult presidential campaign.

..it was Mwalimu Nyerere's intervention in the campaigns that helped Ccm manage about 60+ % of the votes.

..now fast forward to 2015. Baba wa Taifa hayuko. Ukawa wana uzoefu kuliko NCCR ya 95. Dr.Slaa/ prof.Lipumba r just as seasoned as anyone Ccm will nominate.

..suppose Ccm wanamchinja tena Lowassa, projections za ushindi wa Ccm ni asilimia ngapi ya kura??

Kimweri, Mzee Mwanakijiji, Ronal Reagan, yero, Mag3, Pasco
JokaKuu,

1) The on-going voter's registration is paramount for future/valid projections, so we may have to be a little more patient.

2) Thereafter, if there has been more new registrants and (also) there's a high turnout on election-day; then CCM will be electorally defeated in all 3 categories i.e. Presidency, MPs & Ward Councilors.

Poignantly, if there's a negative change in one of a) new registrants or b) turnout; then we could have a "balanced" results in which little-details could have big say on respective final results.

3) BUT it's very unlikely (as previously pointed by MMM) that NEC are competent to handle the first two bullets.

You're spot on. I have been a major critic of Mbowe and I will always be,the biggest reason being, he is a liability to the party. If CHADEMA were careful, they would have chosen another chairman with one aim, to rebuild the party's image and retool its message. People love brand new stuffs after all, they tend to get jaded by the old stuffs. These are simple lessons that unfortunately some CHADEMA's followers don't understand.

I agree with you that some changes have to take place, but any sustainable organization has to be in constant change, there are good decisions that has been made though.

How is ‘CDM bigger than JF' while their supporters in JF have increased exponentially. I also believe they are still picking advices from here in JF.

Zitto and his team shouldn't have done what they did, they are responsible for that, and the ‘msaliti' thing has a great negative impact on his political career.

ACT is a controversial political party, people just don't know a lot about it. CDM is not in this fight alone, there is a union. Zitto was uncontainable and he wanted out. A lot of us don't see that ‘waraka' as a normal power struggle document, there are unkown knowns.

Zitto gets to a new party becomes a supreme leader in seven days, a lot of things became open after his exit, things explaining the how and why he left CDM.

I do believe just like many of us that Dr. Slaa is our strongest candidate. We have 2010 election results to compare impacts of Dr. Slaa's and Lipumba's politics . In 2010 Lipumba was running for the fourth consecutive time. I think presenting Lipumba will be a colossal mistake.

Can you provide anything supporting the ‘Misuse of Ruzuku' notion?, We have heard the opposition teams in parliament every year presenting some of the best ideas to counter government budgets, ideas that are never worked on. The government have increased spending literally every year on non-essential stuffs and national debt has gotten worse.

To consider -even remotely - Lowassa to be a tsunami is an insult to the intelligent of our people. Lowassa like many leaders within his party is incompetent and mediocre.

mkuu achana huyu mchumia hawa ndii wale wanaosubiri uDC

Majority of recent CDM supporters are uninformed and sadly not the same caliber of supporters CDM had before 2010. See the arguments coming out of CDM camp now and 6-7 years ago.Sad state.

Zitto was left with no choice, he was a cat cornered in a locked room, YOU DO NOT do that. Mbowe and Team should have known better. Is Zitto not to blame?of course he is, does that make a difference to CDM now by blaming him?Absolutely NOT.
We all read everything present in the so called waraka, apart from a few unbecoming words thrown here and there, it was not a document worthy of whatever came after it. An independent review of CDM would have come up with 90% of what waraka contained, only difference would be a more diplomatic language. But bearing in mind that this document was not intended for public consumption, then one can easily ignore the foul language. The simple truth is CDM stopped accepting internal criticism and it cost it the 2015 elections.
CDM should have ignored whatever comes out of ACT, they should have played the wiser brother. Whatever ACT is right now should not be CDM's concern, you do not for example expect Lowassa to desert CCM now to another party and content for MP or local council nominations. ACT still is less than 2 years old and Zitto is a 20 Years veteran in Tanzania politics of course any young party would bow to a politician of Zitto's caliber.
As of Now Zitto really does not have to explain anything to CDM, one thing CDM supporters lost by dismissing him dishonourably from the patry. It's one sole reason many of us here endlessly pleaded CDM to let him speak up whatever he had in mind, openly and be criticized and answerable within the party. Now, he has zero obligations to do that.

Dr.Slaa obviously is a popular choice, but he certainly is not the better choice, THIS choosing populism over ability is what made CDM pick popular figures like SUGU, and now Prof J, ahead of capable leaders. What we get is an emmergency motion is tabled in parliameent and everyone expects Lissu and only a handful of MPs to dissect it. WHY?you can't go through a 300 page document when you are a form four leaver, no matter how well spoken you are. This for me is one of many dissapointments i keep getting out of Opposition parties in TZ,they keep choosing popular leaders, and expect them to become good leaders, instead of the opposite. You can not copy CCM and expect to become better than it. NO one following their own shadows ever catches them up!

Ruzuku in CDM have no proper explanation, independent audit, or reasonable uses. party goes into race to buy helicopters instead of building a proper office.party decided to pay Dr.Slaa MP's salary just because he was not sure of winning the general election, yet they complain of misuse of resources in CCM government. Party goes on a spending spree to procure secondhand cars for exhobant amounts without any public tendering..,this is ripe for misuse.., CAG uses a popular term "hati chafu".

I would write more, but I have to get my FEDEX moment..,

I have supported CDM and opposition in general way before JF was renamed from JamboForum, but they keep disappointing and disappointing year in year out. 2010 was the high point, a culmination of massive effort that JF and others contributed to. Kinyume chake hawa hawa wapinzani wakaanza kujiona kama watawala nao. They used to come here to get advice, wakaanza kuja kutoa matamko.

I support change in Tanzania, i just don't see any positive change in TZ Opposition at the moment. CDM has become so similar to CCM in many things, copying it's hopeless strategies, bureaucracy and bad decisions.

CDM need to reinvent itself to what it was before 2010.., then we will be supporting for a nobel cause. This is my opinion, no need to jump on me.

A political struggle has many phases, strategies and approaches, If you are asking everyone to become homogeneous and see life through your eye pupil and thought process, you don't get it! Worse still you opin CDM should reinvent itself without making any positive suggestions to that effect! That's self defeatism ma bro! Get back to the drawing boards. Best wishes, CDM is surging ahead full throttle till liberation phase is achieved, aluta continue!

WOW!

That coming from a CDM supporter who miraculously called out ZITTO for having different ideas. just WOW. I actually despise CDM for following in all CCM mistakes and when they get called out, they be like CCM is doing that as well!Jeez.., IF CCM is bad and does bad things, why would a common mwananchi replace it for another party that does same old junk?

CDM is not surging ahead, stop delludng yourself. Everyone in Tanzania now knows exactly what has to happen for CCM to get their nominee. They know about almost all aspirants message, rhetoric and ideas. YET NO ONE knows anything about CDM aspirants,or UKAWA aspirants. NO ones even knows the process, it's all blanketed in we will have a new nominee by a certain date, just like that. THIS is not USSR. CDM is supposed to be a democratic party. Yet it's getting schooled by an old used to be socialist party how to be democratic, transparent and how to build momentum and PR around them. IF one is told to pick which party is from 1970 without being told the names, that will certainly be CDM.

It's 2015, yet CDM's best ideas come from what CCM will do next.i feel angry when i observe the state of opposition in Tanzania. we once had a vibrant opposition, now we have jobless folks looking for their next gigs.

Do you think he would retire if he is not nominated?

Just wanted to say thus, after I read half way your write-up, I was impressed; I went all the way down to like the post under the condition that if I find a U turn, will unlike it 10 times immediately,

Anyway it is such a great post shared this weekend, I'm of the conclusion that CCM has come to an end, presumably because every beginning has an end.

Tanzanian politics is a sad story, we just find ourselves supporting the opposition using the principle of 'the lesser of the two evils',I can't see series leaders in opposition parties to be honest, and that including Zitto himself.

CDM is stronger now than it was in 2010, and the time is ripe for change now than any other time.

The fact of matter is that every party has challenges and CCM is not immune. Like I said CDM is not static, they are changing with changes in politics. Drastic times calls for drastic measures. The party has to make sure it has candidates who can win an election not just a list of Professors and Doctors of Philosophy who can't talk.

Democracy is all about the people, SUGU won an election because many in his constituency trusted him with the job and many people in Mbeya town are not fools. We have seen his numerous contributions in parliament and being an MP is not just about reading pages, there is a lot more, that's just a tip of the iceberg.

Prof. J just like Afande Sele have established interests in representing people in their constituencies and it is ultimately going to be up to the people in those constituencies to elect who they like. CDM don't choose for people, people choose for CDM, that's good politics.

There is no evidence whatsoever that CDM squanders its own funds rather than mere rhetoric by politicians trying to earn political points regardless. Comparing that with an organization of people verifiably embezzling taxpayer's money and cripple development is not ethical.

Other things you are pointing out works for you and not for many people, CDM is for majority not minority.
