Exclusive: The first Western journalist to enter the town that felt Assad's fury hears witness accounts of Syria's bloodiest episode

The massacre town of Daraya is a place of ghosts and questions. It echoed with the roar of mortar explosions and the crackle of gunfire yesterday, its few returning citizens talking of death, assault, foreign "terrorists", and its cemetery of slaughter haunted by snipers.

The men and women to whom we could talk, two of whom had lost loved ones on Daraya's day of infamy four days ago, told a story different from the version that has been repeated around the world: theirs was a tale of hostage-taking by the Free Syria Army and desperate prisoner-exchange negotiations between the armed opponents of the regime and the Syrian

Rebels and regime forces have been battling for control of several air bases in Syria.

The government said it had repelled a huge attack on an air base near Aleppo while rebels claimed victory in another battle in the east of the country.

The rebels have increasingly targeted the air force in recent weeks, accusing it of launching attacks on cities with helicopter gunships and fighter jets.

In his brief statement, Mr Brahimi told the assembly in New York that the situation in Syria was deteriorating, and that "the suffering of the people is immense".

He said the future of Syria would be "built by its people and none other", and that "the support of the international community is indispensable and very urgent".

The UN's Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said his mission was "daunting, but not insurmountable" and called for "a unity of effort that will have an impact on the ground".

He told the assembly the conflict had "taken a particularly brutal turn" and that the increasing militarisation was "deeply tragic and highly dangerous".

Mr Ban accused countries who sent arms to Syria of spreading misery. He did not name any country, but Russia is Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's main arms supplier.

France, UK agree faster Syria transition needed: Hollande

France and Britain agree on the need to speed up the transition from President Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria to a new government, French President Francois Hollande said on Thursday.

"David Cameron and I are in total agreement -- we must accelerate the political transition (and) help the opposition to form a government," said Hollande, after talks with the British prime minister in London.

Armed groups fighting against the Syrian government have summarily executed at least 20 soldiers in the flashpoint city of Aleppo.

The insurgents say the soldiers were captured in an attack on a military compound in the eastern district of Hanano sometime over the weekend, AFP quoted opposition sources as saying on Monday.

According to a video posted on YouTube, the soldiers had their hands tied behind their backs and their eyes blindfolded before they were lined up and shot.

‘US doesn't need UN to oust Assad' - Clinton

Hillary Clinton threatens the US and "like-minded states" might pursue regime change in Syria in circumvention of the UN if the new resolution on Syria is "toothless". Russia's Foreign Minister believes the conflict is still solvable diplomatically.

Since the Russian and American positions on Syria do not converge, "then we will work with like-minded states to support a Syrian opposition to hasten the day when Assad falls and to help prepare Syria for a democratic future and help it get back on its feet," she declared.

There is no point to passing a new UN resolution on Syria "with no teeth", she said, "because we've seen time and time again that Assad will ignore it and keep attacking his own people," Clinton told reporters.

Russian diplomat: ‘Russia is not clinging to Assad' .....but say the decision to block sanctions is a defense of the principles of the UN Charter, which says that all members must refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.
