Syria's opposition National Coalition takes the official seat of the country at the start of a two-day Arab League summit in Qatar.

The delegation led by Ahmed Moaz al-Khatib, who has said he will resign as head of the coalition, was applauded as it formally assumed the seat.
Mr Khatib called it "part of the restoration of legitimacy" of which Syrians had "long been robbed".
Later, the Arab League authorised member states to give military support to Syrian rebel groups.
A resolution said the summit affirmed the "right of every state to offer all forms of self-defence, including military, to support the resistance of the Syrian people and the Free Syrian Army".

Russia has criticised the Arab League's decision to allow Syria's main opposition coalition to take the country's official seat at its summit.

In a statement, Moscow described the move as "yet another anti-Syrian" step and illegal under international law.

Russia's statement followed similar disapproval from Iran, which said it was "dangerous behaviour".

A Muslim cleric has been brutally beheaded in Syria's northern city of Aleppo by foreign-backed militants, who are already notorious for their atrocities.

The militants reportedly decapitated Sheikh Hasan Saif al-Deen before dragging his lifeless body on the streets.

They also hung the sheikh's head atop the minaret of the mosque where he used to preach.

Local media blamed the gruesome assassination on al-Qaeda-linked group, al-Nusra Front.

The top US military officer has outlined the costs, risks and benefits of possible American military involvement in the Syrian conflict.

Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Gen Martin Dempsey offered five military options, including limited strikes and establishing a no-fly zone.

But he said using force in Syria would be "no less than an act of war" and could cost the US billions of dollars.
