....Russian President Vladimir Putin, Assad’s staunch backer in diplomacy, arms and moral support, congratulates himself for picking the winning side in Syria’s civil war and, moreover, frustrating US and NATO designs to remove the Syrian ruler from power. Those are the winners. And the losers are the United States, the Gulf emirates and Saudi Arabia, Israel and Turkey. Barack Obama’s vision of a democratic, liberal “Arab Spring” has collapsed.

Al Qaeda is a ubiquitous presence as transitional governments struggle to their feet – or not - in Tunisia, Libya and Egypt. Israel finds a tighter than ever Syrian-Hizballah-Iranian noose closing around its borders as Tehran’s nuclear weapons program marches on. Turkey gambled heavily on bringing about Assad’s overthrow as the key to its bid for regional power– and missed.

Five mortar shells have struck the building of the state-run Syrian Education TV network in downtown Damascus, but there were no reports of casualties.

A security source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the SANA news agency that foreign-backed militants fired five projectiles at the building in the Barzaa neighborhood of Damascus on Tuesday, causing material damage to the structure.

Arab League: Arab states free to offer military support to Syrian rebels

The Arab League has issued a statement saying Arab states are free to offer military support to the Syrian rebels and has offered them a seat. The UK Foreign Secretary also announced Wednesday that the UK will increase aid to rebel forces in Syria.

An Arab league statement, issued at the end of a meeting of ministers in Cairo Wednesday, said that Arab states should be able to offer military aid to rebels fighting President Assad.

So far the League has said that the Syrian opposition should be supported only by humanitarian and diplomatic means.

Separately, Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Elarby told a press conference that League ministers have formally invited the Syrian Opposition Coalition to send a representative to attend a league meeting to be held in Doha in April. Normally only nations with diplomatically recognized governments are represented in the league.

Hague: Syria turning into jihadist magnet

War-torn Syria is now "number one" destination for jihadists who could then return to Europe experienced "in weapons and explosives" to carry out terror attacks, Britain's Foreign Secretary William Hague warns.

As the violent military conflict rages on, the threat to Western countries from Syria-grown extremists is rising; and the risk that it may breed a new generation of battle-hardened militants is "growing the longer the fighting in Syria continues," Hague said in his speech Thursday at the Royal United Services Institute.

"They may not pose a threat to us when they first go to Syria but if they survive some may return ideologically hardened and with experience of weapons and explosives," he added.

Russia warns UK on arming Syrian rebels

Any attempt by the UK to arm Syrian rebels would be a breach of international law, Russia has warned.

It comes after David Cameron suggested the UK would consider vetoing an extension to the European Union's arms embargo on Syria.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who is London for talks with the foreign secretary, made it clear Moscow would oppose any move to supply arms.

Syria sees off crisis as militants gasp last breaths: Iran deputy FM

Iran's deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs says Syria has successfully weathered its security crisis, adding that foreign-backed militants in the Arab country are "taking their last breaths."

"Syria has successfully crossed over the security crisis and the few terrorists remaining on the peripheries of some of regions are taking their last breaths," Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said at a meeting with Algeria's Foreign Minister Mourad Medelci in the Algerian capital city of Algiers.

France backs ending EU arms embargo on Syria

Mr Hollande said he did not want a "total war" in Syria

French President Francois Hollande has called for the EU arms embargo on Syria to be lifted in order to aid anti-government forces.

"We are ready to support the rebels, so we are ready to go that far," he said.

He told reporters that France and the UK agreed on the issue but that other countries would have to be convinced.

Russia, which is not an EU member and is one of Syria's principal allies, has strongly opposed any arming of Syria's opposition.

Use of chemical weapons, "first act" by opposition interim government

The Syrian minister also said that Turkey and Qatar, which support militants fighting against the government of President Bashar al-Assad, bore "legal, moral and political responsibility" for the chemical attack in the northern city of Aleppo on Tuesday.

At least 25 people were killed and 86 others were injured after militants fired rocks containing "poisonous gases" into Aleppo’s Khan al-Assal village. Women and children are reported to be among the victims.

A senior Iranian lawmaker has criticized the Syrian opposition's move to name a naturalized Syrian-born US citizen as the head of what they call an interim government.

"The move that was made today by the Syrian opposition [and] hosted by Turkey to select an interim prime minister is a childish game," Alaeddin Boroujerdi, the Chairman of Iran Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said on Tuesday.

"Despite all foreign pressures and the support from the United States and its regional allies for terrorists, the government of [Syrian President] Basher al-Assad will continue to work until the end of the presidential term in 2014," he stressed.
The comments came hours after Syria's foreign-backed opposition group, known as the Syrian National Coalition, convened in Istanbul and picked Ghassan Hitto as the prime minister of the so-called interim government.

Boroujerdi said the move will further complicate the situation in Syria, and urged the Turkish government to help end the turmoil and killing of innocent people in the Arab country, "instead of helping the protraction of the crisis."

Hitto, 50, who lived in Texas until recently, moved to Turkey last November in an effort to manage military aid to areas held by the foreign-backed militants who are fighting against the Assad government.

The choice followed on the heels of remarks made earlier in the day by the US Secretary of State John Kerry, who said Washington would not "stand in the way" of European countries if they decided to arm the militants fighting against the Syrian government.

On Thursday, the French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said Paris and London would arm the militants even if other EU members do not agree with lifting a current arms embargo on Syria.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of Army and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.

The Syrian government has said that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and that a very large number of the militants operating in the country are foreign nationals.

Several international human rights organizations have condemned the foreign-sponsored militants of committing war crimes.

Syrian rebels and the government have accused each other of firing chemical weapons, reportedly killing at least 25 people in the north of the country.

A Syrian minister said it was a "dangerous escalation" and the "first act" of a new rebel authority.

However, both a chemical weapons monitoring body and the US said there was no evidence they had been used.

Both sides say the attack happened in the Khan al-Assal region north of the second city, Aleppo.

The US says it is looking carefully at the allegations, while Russia has backed the Syrian government's claims.

Rebels could resort to chemical weapons, Syria warns

Syria warned the world on Saturday that rebels may resort to using chemical arms after they captured a chlorine factory near Aleppo. The regime's words of caution come as rebel groups elected a former Assad military chief to lead their forces.

Syria: Jihadist Al-Nusra Front Siezes Chemical Factory Near Allepo

Late Saturday night, it was reported that FSA fighters captured a Syrian chemical factory used to make toxic chlorine.

Some reports suggested that the chloride factory at Al-Safira, southeast of Aleppo, is a also a chemical weapons depot and research station with chemical tipped scud missiles. The town, along with the factory has reportedly been overrun by jihadists who are purportedly fighting the Syrian government. The jihadists are members of al Nusra, a terrorist group associated with al-Qaeda.
Keeping in mind that the Syrian “opposition” has been overrun by al Qaeda fighters, who have themselves been guilty of horrendous crimes against the Syrians, this turn of events is ominous and is precisely what Assad himself warned about.

Syrian opposition leader Ahmed Moaz al-Khatib resigns

Mr Khatib wrote on Facebook that world powers had failed to help the rebels, and he could only improve the situation by working outside of the coalition.
Analysts say Mr Khatib believed the SNC was too heavily influenced by Islamists and foreign powers like Qatar.

However, a later report claimed that the SNC had refused his resignation and expected him to continue in his post.
