IMF Mission in Tanzania for Talks on $1 Billion Funding Request
An International Monetary Fund team is in Tanzania for talks on the East Africa nation’s request for a three-year financing package of $1.1 billion.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan is seeking the funds to support the nation’s recovery from the coronavirus pandemic, her spokeswoman, Zuhura Yunus, told reporters in the commercial hub of Dar es Salaam on Thursday.
Hassan told Bloomberg News in an interview in March that her administration was seeking at least $700 million from the IMF. Securing additional funding from multilateral lenders is part of Hassan’s wider plan to boost Tanzania’s fiscal position by taking on more concessional loans.
The IMF in September raised the nation’s risk of debt distress to moderate, from low, after the government ramped up commercial borrowings in recent years, including about $1.5 billion from Standard Chartered Plc to help fund construction of a new railroad.
