Goran Pandev celebrates scoring the decisive third goal for Internazionale. Photograph: Martin Rose/Bongarts/Getty Images Goran Pandev scored a late winner to send the European Cup holders, Inter nazionale, into the quarter-finals after a dramatic 3-2 victory at Bayern Munich.
The Macedonian's goal in the 88th minute put the teams level at 3-3 on aggregate, but Inter advanced on the away-goals rule after losing the home leg 1-0.
Samuel Eto'o scored for Inter in the fourth minute, but Mario Gomez levelled in the 21st and Thomas Müller put Bayern ahead in the 31st. Wesley Sneijder scored in the 63rd to pull Inter level and Eto'o set up Pandev's winner with a neat pass. He drove a left-foot shot into the roof of the net from inside the area. Eto'o had also set up Sneijder's goal, the Dutchman finding the far corner from the edge of the area.
Bayern controlled the match for most of the first hour but then allowed Inter back. "It's our own fault," Gomez said later. "It's a deep wound because we played a grandiose 65 minutes. Maybe we were too sure of ourselves at the end. We were too passive, nobody took responsibility."
Inter became only the second team to advance in the Champions League after losing the home leg. The first were Ajax in 1996, then coached by Louis van Gaal and now the departing Bayern coach.
Bayern will now finish the season without a trophy, after completing the domestic double last season and reaching the final of the European Cup, which they lost 2-0 to Inter. Van Gaal has already been forced to leave the club at the end of the season, one year early.
"When we lose such a game it's very disappointing because it's our own fault," he added. "It's not the first time this season but we haven't learned from our mistakes. We created so many chances and didn't use them, and we didn't defend well in the second half. That's how the opponent remains in the game. We can't say that Inter was better, but we are the ones who are out."
Inter got off to a perfect start, with Eto'o notching his eighth goal of the competition this season. Pandev sent in a through ball and the Cameroon striker beat the offside trap to slot the ball through the legs of Thomas Kraft.
Bayern took time to recover but when they did, they dominated. Inter's first goal was their only shot on target in the first 45 minutes.
Gomez equalised with his eighth Champions League goal of the season after a mistake by the goalkeeper Júlio César. He let Arjen Robben's attempt from 20 yards bounce off his chest and Gomez pounced to hook the ball over the goalkeeper.
The Brazilian did well to punch away another effort by Gomez in the 26th minute, but he was helpless when Müller put Bayern ahead.
Robben's pass struck the foot of Lúcio and bounced straight into the path of Müller, who had no trouble lifting the ball past César.
Franck Ribéry made a poor start, losing possession several times, but he recovered late in the first half. The Frenchman easily went past Andrea Ranocchia and ran clear to face César, but the goalkeeper tipped his shot over the bar.
Ribéry's cross to Gomez at the far post nearly produced a third for Bayern. The effort found its way past César, with the ball trickling across the goal. Ranocchia cleared from the line but his effort struck Müller and the ball bounced off a post.
The chances continued, with a late mistake by Ranocchia then turning into a perfect pass for Robben, who shot wide.
Ribéry opened the way for Gomez at the start of the second half, but César saved, while a tremendous volley from Gomez in the 62nd minute was also saved.
At the other end, Pandev displayed superb control in taming a long pass, but his left-foot volley sailed high, then he shot wide a few minutes later.
Sneijder had a good opportunity in the 73rd minute, but he also shot wide as Bayern lost their composure.
The match began with a minute of silence for the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan and Inter's late substitute Yuto Nagatomo stood in the centre of the field with his national flag at the end of the match.

It's not a Gurdian match repot. It looks like a cut and paste job from the Press association.
Great game of football between Bayern and Inter. Lots of chances for both teams.
Not the Inter that we saw @ White Hart Lane when Spurs crushed them 3-1.
Inter looked hungry for the ball and were up for it!
Bayern did not play badly and could have added to the 2 goals but Inter got their reward with the cracking third goal by Pandev.
So it looks like the last eight will be: Shaktar, Shalke, Spurs, Inter, Man U , Chelsea, Real and Barcelona.
Roll on Friday for the draw. I hope Spurs draw Shalke.

Is Van Gaal going to get the sack now? or Are they definitely going to keep him until the summer?
It was reported on the BBC website yesterday that Van Gaal will leave "by mutual consent" at the end of the season. A polite sacking.

Sounds familiar to what they did to United at Old Trafford last season.

Wonderful match. It's nice to see Inter playing such free flowing attacking football after 3 years of Mourinho's obsessively cautious tactics. Why in the world hadn't the Brazilian Football Federation offer the Brazil job to Leonardo instead of to the unimaginative, conservative Mano Menezes whose current team lacks any midfield creativity or flair?

agree but then this is an engish knew **** all noos paper c charlie. Wot is interesting is that spurs played like italians played in the 60s and got thru undeserevedly and now the only teams that get off their butts and attack come from Italia.
To stop Spain there is Inter. To tell mister ferguson the sir lies nowhere in a 150 year republic there is inter. To be factitious or is that fa see shus the only threat is Shack Tar. Them boys attack and dont give a for unlawful carnal knowledge. They lost to Arse n All and beat them which shows they are seriously NAIVE just like the Boat team from kat tall an. But they play football that gives joie de vivre whereas english teams play tack ticks that make u want to go t bed more than early.

FORZA INTER o forse magari SHACK TAR

Van Gaal at Liverpool 😛 its not going to happen is it, Kenny Dalglish will get it permanently I think.
So who will replace Van Gaal they can't get Joachim Loew as he just signed a extension for the national team, should be interesting how this develops.

I suppose when Inter say that they are going there to win, then we should take that seriously, especially en the context of recent Italian humiliations. My double of Inter scoring first but failing to win (4/1) with Man U and Marseille drawing 2-2 (22/1) came perilously close to reality for the bookies liking ... hope I didn't alter the course of the matches... lol

Guardian football writing is so bad, you wonder if they're doing it deliberately.

      calcioexpert 16 March 2011 12:26AM

The report is a bit incomplete if not biased. Inter scored early and showed that anytime they could get the go ahead goal when JC struck, yet again. Bayern's first goal was a plain gift. At that point Inter lost their composure and champions like Robben and Ribery took over. Bayern's second goal was again a gift when a butchered clear provided the assist for Mueller. At that point JC fortunately effected his timely resurrection and stopped Bayern from increasing their lead. The second half saw a much calmer Inter get closer and closer to scoring until it was obvious that it was going to happen. Bayern defense could NOT possibly stop Eto'o. Even with the much too young Coutinho in the mix Inter managed to dominate. Ranocchia was monumental (repeating his performance in his debut for Italy in Germany). First Sneijder then Cambiasso and Pandev managed to miss goals. Then the end was consequent to Inter's superior technique and flair. A game that be long remembered as it often happens between Italian and German sides. Now if only Milito would come back.

I don't know... Inter truly didn't deserve this one, they were completely destroyed in the first half, it should have been 5-1. Robben was phenomenal. But Bayern must have had some valium in their tea or something, they played slow en arrogant in the second half, with especially Gomez and Altintop failing conspicuously. Then Motta kicked Robben out of the game... and from that point one could just wait for Inter to finish it. Motta should have been booked for that foul on Robben, which would have influenced the game, as he was one of the strongest players on Inter's side. Eto'o and Sneijder were also outstanding... but still Inter never displayed positive, attractive football like Bayern did in the first half. That was sparkling and wonderful to watch. I think it will take a very long time before we will see a Bayern team play that good again. In this match you could watch the death of van Gaal's Bayern project.

Unfortunate that the Graun has not seen fit to cover this game; it was simply magnificent . Started off watching United until Chicharito scored on three minutes . Sammy Etoo is running wild this season , and Leonardo has got this team into an apparently completely new mindset and playing really openly .They had to be really good to not go under to a livewire Bayern in the first half.
Arjen Robben must be the most dangerous attacker, bar Messi, in the world . Last year he put out Fiorentina and United , and when he went off , you felt it Bayern could lose it . Four absolutely crucial moments in front of the Inter goal for Bayern to finish it off , with Julio Cesar recovering well from a disastrous fumble for the first. Coutinho gave them a nimbleness up front in the latter stages , and Lucio was a rock in the second half .
Karma for Bayern , who didn´t really deserve to go out today , as they didn´t really deserve to beat United lat season.
Superb game , praise and respect to both teams . Blog, Herr Honigstein , please.

Van Gall is such a deeply unimpressive man. A jackass, really. Arrogance like his is insufferable and delusional. Only a precious few are 'special' enough to carry such arrogance. Further, he lacks grace. Bayern were beaten decisively when you fully account for both legs.
Good riddance to him. And a big welcome to Leonardo (and I am no Inter supporter).
Out of nowhere, Inter are once again real contenders in the CL.

Pandev scored a great goal and Sneijder too, but you've got to give it to Eto'o! Two quality assists and a very useful curtain raiser. There some players who are just cut out for this Champions League thing and he's one. Right, Ibrahimovic ?

      Chilematt 16 March 2011 12:58AM

Absolutely cracker of a game - and the classic 'game of two halves'.
After the opening goal it was all Bayern and yet somehow Inter came back into it second half, all the while looking like they could concede again.
As a neutral I don't feel sorry for Bayern - they had the chances and fluffed them - and it was impressive from Inter to keep playing their game.

      kwakwa 16 March 2011 1:04AM

Great game. Two sides with exceptional attacks - apart from Bayern's finishing - and weak defending. The difference was that Bayern's defending was much worse, virtually nonexistent. Bayern wasted their many chances in the first half, then choked in the second half. Eto'o, Sneijder and Cambiasso are world class.

    • 60x60.png
      squeakyweasel 16 March 2011 1:06AM

Bayern have not got a great recent record of standing by their main man - no wonder Arsene Wenger has dismissed the prospect of joining them - who could blame him?
The manager should have walked, or the club should dispensed with his services, earlier in the season when the troublers started and they both may have kept their dignity.
It's become an untenable situation anyway and if this great club don't watch out all their hard work in recent years could be brought down not even one full season after being Champions league finalists.
Any BM fans who saw Uli Hoeneß and the other board members in the directors box on TV tonight after they lost the game should be very worried.
Leaving a manager, in which they have no faith, in charge of such an important match, especially a manager that knows he's not wanted after the end of the season, is just plain stupid!
If BM fail to retain a CL spot by getting to 3rd in the BL by the end of the season there may be a mass exodus of key players - Robben said as much in his post match interview tonight on German Sky TV.
Europes big clubs are watching - wallets at the ready!

Always think that Van Gaal looks like the sadistic and perverted headmaster of an obscure private school . Strange looking bloke , that huge , unpleasant face ; just doesn´t look like a football person. Notoriously doesn´t trust Brazilian players either, but after what Breno did at the end today , who could blame him!
      Greedy pig
Yeah , Etoo´s feet and legs were level with the last Bayern defender , but his upper body was obviously leaning forward as he pushed off on his run . Wonder if they have changed the ´interpretation´again...

Inter can't beat Barcelona this year with the style Leonardo has them playing. It's pretty to watch, but it plays right into Barca's strength. No one can beat Barca at Barca's game. Inter can't defend this year. Say what you will about Mourinho, but his way is the only to beat Barca, and you need a side like Inter had last year (with Milito, Eto'o and Sneijder in top form), with defenders who defend, and some luck.

Bullshit! That was a normal fault that you se in every game, not to mention the PL. Robben is great but very fragile and it was not Motta's fault he went out.
I don't know... Inter truly didn't deserve this one, they were completely destroyed in the first half, it should have been 5-1. Robben was phenomenal. So tell me why on earth Inter did not deserved the victory? Because Bayern were great (but not so much since they could not close the game when they had the chance) in the first half? I have an information for you: Football is played in 90 minutes, not in 45.

Fabio Capello stalls on John Terry captaincy until after Wales game

• Terry must wait before being reinstated as captain
• Capello was expected to meet with Ferdinand on Tuesday

John Terry was Fabio Capello's original choice as England captain but was relieved of his duties early last year. Photograph: Owen Humphreys/PA The confusion surrounding Fabio Capello's long-term intentions over the England captaincy has intensified after it emerged that no decision on John Terry's candidacy to regain the armband on a permanent basis will officially be made until after the Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales on 26 March.
Terry will lead out the side at the Millennium Stadium in the anticipated absence of the current captain, Rio Ferdinand, who is still recovering from a calf complaint, and the deputy, Steven Gerrard, through injury. Yet Capello had suggested earlier this week that Terry had served his time after being stripped of the captaincy following allegations of an affair with the former girlfriend of Wayne Bridge 13 months ago, indicating he needed "to make a decision about this problem" and that "it does not need to be captain for one game, it needs to be permanent".
That news understandably unnerved Ferdinand, who has since been in contact with England's general manager, Franco Baldini, seeking clarity over his position. The pair had texted and spoken on Monday and did so again today, with the England hierarchy attempting to placate the United defender by reassuring him that, as yet, Terry's reappointment was only for the game against Wales.
Capello was expected to speak with the Manchester United centre-half at the Champions League tie against Marseille at Old Trafford, but the England manager sat in the directors box and it is understood that the pair did not meet.
Yet it is believed that Capello remains inclined to reappoint Terry – who was his original selection to lead the side – and will now gauge the reaction from his international team-mates, both on the pitch and in the dressing room, to his performance as captain against the Welsh before making any decision public. That, inevitably, will leave Ferdinand in a disconcerting state of limbo for a while longer.
Terry received the predictable backing of his club-mates at Chelsea ahead of Wednesday's Champions League match with Copenhagen, with his manager Carlo Ancelotti insisting the 30-year-old would be "happy" to resume duties as national captain. "It's the decision of the national team manager, but he would be happy for this [to happen]," said the Chelsea manager. "He has maintained the same level of performance [over the past 12 months] – he's been here a long time, he's a Chelsea man, a Chelsea player, and he has fantastic experience and personality to be a captain."
"In football, when you're captain, you have to have the trust of your team-mates," added Branislav Ivanovic. "You have to have a lot of qualities to be a leader to make sure everything is OK. At Chelsea, he is our captain and he will be captain until the end of his career. You can see in the way he plays, in his performances, what he is like for us."
Terry was first appointed permanent captain by Steve McClaren in August 2006, with Capello confirming he would retain the position two years later after a set of auditions that included trials for Ferdinand and Gerrard. He was dismissed in a 12-minute meeting at Wembley in February last year and has been overlooked since, even when the armband was passed around the team amid the flurry of substitutions in friendly fixtures. Capello intends to announce his choice on the eve of the game against Wales.

Chelsea's Fernando Torres may be given a rest against Copenhagen

• Ancelotti keeps eye on Sunday's visit of Manchester City
• Spaniard yet to score after five starts for Chelsea

    Carlo-Ancelotti-007.jpg
Carlo Ancelotti, right, and the first-team coach Paul Clement arrange the dummies for free-kick practice in training at Cobham. Photograph: Tom Hevezi/AP Carlo Ancelotti has offered an indication of just how integral Fernando Torres has become to Chelsea, despite a lack of goals, by admitting he will consider resting the Spaniard for Champions League tie against Copenhagen, with one eye fixed on Sunday's more daunting contest with Manchester City.
Torres has yet to score since his £50m move from Liverpool in January, despite starting all five matches for which he has been eligible, form which might have put his place in jeopardy anyway. But while a game against the Danish team would appear to represent a tantalising opportunity to break that duck, Ancelotti indicated he would prefer to keep the striker fresh in the knowledge that should Chelsea prevail at home to City, the champions would leapfrog them into third place.
Ancelotti's team already have a 2-0 lead in their Champions League tie against Copenhagen after the victory at Parken last month and while he made a point of insisting his side should guard against complacency, the manager is confident that they will prevail. "I will not say who will definitely play but maybe [Torres] will have a rest," said the Italian, who is also expected to rest Michael Essien. "I want to rotate in this game. My best team is not just 11 players. We have all the players fit – Yossi Benayoun will come back to train on Thursday, which is fantastic – and we want to use them as we prepare for this game and for Manchester City."
Copenhagen, only recently returned from their lengthy winter break and a side whose two league games since the resumption of the domestic campaign have produced a win and a first defeat of the season, might have granted Torres a chance to continue his adaptation to new team-mates and surroundings. The Spaniard has played with Didier Drogba, Nicolas Anelka – who has seven goals in Europe this term, including both in the first leg – and Salomon Kalou to date, showing only flashes of understanding with each.
Indeed, he has not scored a senior goal since Liverpool's 3-0 win at Wolves in January. "For me, it's not important that he's not scored yet," said Ancelotti. "Obviously we want our strikers to score. It's important for strikers to do that. But, in my opinion, he's played well for the team and has done what I asked him to do on the pitch.
"The only problem is that he's a new player for us and he has to know better our kind of play. He moves well and has had a lot of chances, and been unlucky sometimes. But he will score. He has grown quickly and doesn't have a problem."
Copenhagen, however, expect Torres to feature alongside Anelka tonight. "I'm 100% sure that Torres will play, and I also think that they will try to pass to him a lot," said the coach, Stale Solbakken. "Anelka didn't play the last game [at Blackpool] so I don't think it's a bad guess to say they will start this game together."
The Danes' task is daunting. Only two sides have ever progressed after losing the first leg at home – Ajax against Panathinaikos in the 1995-96 semi-final and Internazionale on Tuesday night – since the competition was revamped. That suggests Chelsea have virtually secured this tie, with their game on Sunday appearing more awkward. While Ancelotti has been publicly dismissive of Chelsea's chances of retaining the league title having slipped 15 points behind Manchester United last month, the leaders' recent stutter has seen that trimmed to nine points. Furthermore, they have a game in hand, against Birmingham City, and are yet to visit Old Trafford. "We cannot say goodbye to the title," Branislav Ivanovic said. "We have all our players fit, a good squad, and we have to use all our power to fight until the last moment in all competitions."
Yet, even if a title defence still feels unlikely, it is vital Chelsea secure a top-four finish this term – and qualification for the Champions League – with victory in their home games against City, against whom they have lost their last three games, and fifth-placed Tottenham considered critical in achieving that aim. Should their place in the top four be secured before the end of the season and the title still be out of their reach, then Ancelotti could potentially consider resting players ahead of key contests in the latter stages of the Champions League with his priorities switched.
Maintaining momentum is also key, with confidence flowing since they prevailed in Denmark. "Copenhagen was an important match for us to move on," added Ancelotti. "It gave us confidence, optimism, not just the result. We had a very good performance and were able to repeat that against United. I've said that, for two months, we were asleep but now we are ready to fight for the rest of the season. Our moment is good. So the turning point was the game in Copenhagen."

Torres atarajia kufunga leo Send to a friend Tuesday, 15 March 2011 20:57

LONDON, England

Mourinho:Hatuogopi historia Send to a friend Tuesday, 15 March 2011 20:56

MADRID, Hispania

Mwanahamisi apewa kashfa ya Semenya Send to a friend Tuesday, 15 March 2011 21:06

Mystery over role of agent Liverpool used in Andy Carroll transfer

• Liverpool employed services of little-known David Bromley
• Club declined to explain what agent had done for them

Andy Carroll, Liverpool's new signing, is reported to be in dispute with his former agent, Peter Harrison. Photograph: Andrew Powell/Liverpool FC via Getty Images Liverpool used the services of a little-known agent, David Bromley, who is based in Maidstone, Kent, when they signed Andy Carroll from Newcastle United for £35m on 31 January. Carroll himself stated on his contract that he did not use the services of an agent at all; a solicitor, Richard Green, said he had advised him.
Liverpool declined to explain why they had used Bromley, what work he had done on the deal, or how much they had paid him, but did acknowledge in a statement that the club did "use the services of an agent on the transfer".
Carroll is reported to be in dispute with his former agent, Peter Harrison, who claims he had a valid two-year contract to represent Carroll at the time the player moved to Liverpool. Harrison, who represented Carroll from the age of 16, is reported to have sued the player for loss of earnings, which has been referred to arbitration. Harrison is understood to claim that Carroll had wanted to be represented by Kevin Nolan's agent, Mark Curtis, while Harrison's contract still had months to run.
Although Bromley holds a Fifa licence and is registered with the FA, he is not a prominent agent known for acting on high-profile deals. He does, however, have a long, close association with Curtis, having been a co-director in three companies, including two football agencies, Direct Sports Management, which is now not trading, and Sports Player Management, which went into liquidation and was struck off the companies register in January 2008. The other, Property Hunter, was dissolved last year.
Football Association rules governing the conduct of agents require them to have written contracts with any player they represent, for a maximum of two years. If a player breaks a contract with an agent, as Harrison claims Carroll did, the agent can sue for lost earnings. If the player renegotiates his contract or moves clubs within the two years for which the contract runs, he cannot be represented by another agent, or the FA will treat it as a poaching case, a breach of the agents' code of conduct. Curtis is not on Carroll's contract as having acted at all for either side.
Abritration proceedings are confidential and Harrison declined to comment on the revelation that Bromley, Curtis's associate, acted for Liverpool. Newcastle did not answer a series of questions about how the deal worked, neither did Curtis nor Bromley.
