Nchunga, Mosha kikaangoni leo

na Mwandishi wetu

amka2.gif

Photograph: Mark Thompson/Getty Images The former Manchester United and England captain, Bryan Robson, is battling cancer. Robson, 54, who is currently Thailand's national team manager, underwent an operation to remove a tumour from his throat on 3 March in a Bangkok hospital, a United spokesman confirmed.
A laboratory report revealed a cancerous tumour which will need further treatment, according to the Manchester Evening News. The spokesman added that surgeons were "confident" the condition could be treated.
They added: "At this moment, Bryan is fine to continue with his role as Thailand coach and his role as ambassador of Manchester United.
"Bryan and family have requested that he can continue with his treatment in private and ask that their privacy is respected."
Robson, a hero at Old Trafford, joined United in 1981, making 345 appearances and helping the club to two Premier League titles, three FA Cups and the European Cup Winners' Cup. Despite a succession of major injuries, Robson won 90 caps for England, 65 of which were as captain and he was dubbed "Captain Marvel" by the then manager, Bobby Robson.

However, Robson led Middlesbrough to promotion the following season. They also reached the League Cup final again in 1998, but lost 2-0 to Chelsea. Robson eventually left Middlesbrough at the end of the 2000-01 season, going on to manage Bradford City, West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield United, before taking the Thailand job.

Sir Alex Ferguson hails form of Javier Hernández for Manchester United

&#8226; Mexican scores twice in defeat of Marseille
&#8226; Manager surprised by striker's prolific form

  • The Guardian, Wednesday 16 March 2011 <li class="history">Article history
Link to this video Sir Alex Ferguson admitted that he was surprised by Javier Hernández's prolific form, after the Mexican's goals against Marseille put Manchester United into the Champions League quarter-finals. Hernández has started 17 games in his first season at Old Trafford and he has scored 16 times . He is mounting a serious challenge for Dimitar Berbatov's place in the team, having been chosen ahead of the Bulgarian in four of the last five matches.
"We are surprised," Ferguson said. "When we brought him to the club we thought it would take him a while to adapt and that we would mainly use him as a substitute. When he has come on he has won games for us. He has improved his strength and he's lasting the 90 minutes now and it's giving us options. With his form as it is, we can make changes now."
Wayne Rooney's relationship with Hernández is flourishing. Ferguson said: "It's developing pretty well. Where Wayne has played in the last couple of games [in a deeper role], he is a real threat because he has such power and speed with the ball. And, of course, Hernández is unbelievable with his movement. If you see his movement for the first goal, he made three different types of run. The boy's got goals in him."
Rooney said: "He's got great movement and I'm now playing in the position where I started my career. I am enjoying it. I am getting on the ball, linking the play and thankfully Javier is a finisher, so that helps the team."
Ferguson, who will attend a Football Association hearing on Wednesday, to face a charge of improper conduct for criticisms of the referee Martin Atkinson after a defeat at Chelsea earlier this month, has taken his team to the quarter-finals for five successive seasons.
"I'm proud of the achievements of the team," he said. "We have had some great experiences in the European Cup over the years. It is the best tournament in the world. It is the one you want to try and win again. This team's best chance is because our away form is very good. That always gives you a chance in the next stage. Every team has their qualities. It does not matter who you get, you have got to take it. You cannot pick your teams. At this stage you are going to get a very hard game."
The draw is on Friday and Rooney was asked if he wanted to avoid Barcelona. "No," he said. "If you are going to win this tournament, you have to beat them. We are thankful to be in the next round, but whoever we get we will be confident we can win it."
The only downside was that John O'Shea and his replacement, Rafael da Silva, came off with suspected hamstring injuries. Ferguson said: "The balance of the team was affected with two defenders coming off. There was a lack of experience in the team and that could have cost us. But we hung on. [Marseille] are a very powerful team and their delivery into the box was very good. They kept us under pressure a lot of times.
"When we played our football particularly in their half of the field we did OK. We always looked comfortable on the ball. But we just couldn't get enough of it in the second half in their half of the field. They kept us on the edge of our box a lot."
The Marseille coach, Didier Deschamps, said: "My first feeling is one of regret. We let our chance slip and we are out. Manchester United are not a fantastic side and they suffered two injuries during the game. They were not at their best but we could not capitalise on that.
"But we are a young side, who are learning, and it will take time. At this level small details win you games. Our aim at the beginning of the season was to get to the last 16 and we have achieved that. So in a way we have done reasonably well."

Manchester United may have to move Michael Carrick into defence

&#8226; United will have four fit defenders for Bolton on Saturday
&#8226; Carrick hopes injuries will not force him into defence

    Michael-Carrick-007.jpg
The midfielder Michael Carrick, left, hopes he will not have to play in defence for Manchester United. Photograph: Neal Simpson/Empics Sport Michael Carrick is keeping his fingers crossed that he is not pressed into service as an emergency defender for Manchester United, who may be without 11 players when they host Bolton Wanderers in the Premier League on Saturday.
An already extensive injury list grew even longer during Tuesday's 2-1 Champions League triumph over Marseille at Old Trafford, with two right-backs, John O'Shea and Rafael da Silva, limping off with hamstring problems.
Unless Jonny Evans is able to recover from a calf problem that has kept him out of United's last eight games, Sir Alex Ferguson will have only four fit defenders available, including Rafael's twin brother, Fabio da Silva, who became his side's third right-back last night even though most of his first-team experience has come on the left.
United found themselves in a similar situation last December, when both Carrick and Darren Fletcher were deployed in defence for a match at Fulham. United lost 3-0.
United face Bolton having lost their last two league games, at Chelsea and Liverpool, and their lead over Arsenal is down to three points having played a game more, so they can hardly afford any more setbacks.
Carrick is hoping to avoid more defensive duties in the search for a solution to Ferguson's injury woes. "It did get a mention in the changing room," said Carrick. "I said to Mike Phelan, 'I don't fancy that again'.
"It is never nice to get the injuries of course. It is disappointing when you pick up a number in a similar position. But I don't think we are that desperate yet and hopefully I won't be called upon."
