Imani Makongoro

Manchester United's midfielder Nani tries to avoid the challenge by Marseille's Souleymane Diawara at Old Trafford. Photograph: Andrew Yates/AFP/Getty Images Manchester United reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a sense of strain that was relieved only by the full-time whistle. When they led 2-0 the work seemed to have been completed, but this was far from club's best line-up and when Wes Brown, under pressure from his former team-mate Gabriel Heinze, headed into his own net with eight minutes remaining they were a goal away from elimination.
Anyone in the crowd who had begun to get a little bored by the technically efficient yet ineffective work of Marseille had their interest awakened. The extended stoppage time was a particular trial on a disrupted occasion when the right-back John O'Shea and then his replacement Rafael da Silva both went off through injury. The soothing effect of Javier Hernández, whose two goals took his tally to five in the past five appearances, was precious and his selection instead of Dimitar Berbatov proved the key element.
Nemanja Vidic's unavailability because of a calf injury meant that there was no tone of reassurance at the core of the defence since Rio Ferdinand continues to be sidelined. Sir Alex Ferguson had little option but to field Chris Smalling and Brown together even though they had recently floundered in the 3-1 defeat at Anfield. Such circumstances indicated that it would be even more prudent than usual to take the game to the opposition as forcefully as possible. The visitors soon felt the impact.
Wayne Rooney found Ryan Giggs in the fifth minute and he continued the move with a low cross from the left that was turned in by Hernández. A quarter-of-an-hour later the scorer was booked for a foul on Heinze. There was tension in the air and the visitors could have been level a little later had André-Pierre Gignac not shot wildly after being sent clear by a header from André Ayew.
That sort of incident would have been disquieting enough in itself but on this occasion it was also a superfluous reminder that the make-up of the United defence was not as Ferguson would have wished. In the period before the interval, the hosts were slightly more conservative while Marseille started to probe a little and started to get a response from the centre-forward Gignac.
Despite that, Didier Deschamps' line-up seemed then to suffer from the same blandness that had afflicted them at the Vélodrome. They did have one wonderful opportunity in the first half of this match when the centre-half Souleymane Diawara, unmarked behind Paul Scholes, headed wide from Taye Taiwo's cross after 36 minutes. At that moment, however, John O'Shea was down with a hamstring injury that would see him replaced by Rafael da Silva.
The contest, unusually, was both tense and entertaining. A penalty claim for a challenge on Hernández roused the crowd for instance while failing utterly to awaken the interest of the Spanish referee Carlos Carballo. United were prone to disquiet. They were ahead in the tie at the interval, yet prudence seemed important to them even if it meant that Marseille could go on feeling optimistic.
While there had been no panic from Smalling or Brown, the remainder of the line-up could not fail to have some sense of inhibition. Full-blooded attack was not advisable when maintaining cover in defence seemed so important. The contrast with the opposition was marked. Marseille had no option but to be bold. The trait had not looked to be in their character at all in the first leg, yet they had noticed possibilities for them in this game.
The attritional tone of the fixture was apparent when Da Silva seemed to be affected, like O'Shea before him. Despite the attempt to continue he, too, had to give way eventually, as his brother Fábio da Silva took the field. There had also been a voluntary alteration, with Ferguson turning to the running power of Antonio Valencia.
United's principal encouragement lay in the hope that Marseille, punchless in the majority of the tie, would not land a real blow in the last quarter-of-an-hour. Whatever Ferguson's scheme had been, his players looked inhibited by the fact that their advantage was slim. There was no sense, in a disrupted line-up, that they would attack Deschamps' side with verve.
No one at all was at ease and Mathieu Valbuena had no sooner been introduced than he was shown a yellow card. There was no ease until United extended the lead in the 76th minute. It was done, despite all the strain, with finesse.
Valencia fed a well-weighted pass through on the right and Giggs crossed low for Hernández to score once again. It had been a night of tension, but the incisiveness of United was a quality that put them beyond the reach of these opponents.

What was it that the blog posted earlier today said? Something about Hernandez only scoring against weaker sides?

      Javier Hernandez: The Mexican N'Gog!
Congratulations, Aceal. You know less about football than my Grandma.

Predictable stuff - One team from a seedy, drug-riddled underworld with its ancient backstreets strewn with gangsters and garbage was always going to narrowly squeak past another.

      Awesome - go Chicharito!
Phew! Was squeaky bum time there at the end courtesy of Mr. Brown and Scholes Fabregas style clearance!

Had to laugh at Valencia's part in the second goal. The situation is begging for him to use his left foot, but no, he can't. So he runs around in a little circle and uses his right!

Well done Man U , Chicarito is quality! Unlucky Marseille, as well as getting a goal they did have 2 clear early chances but didn't take them and that was crucial.
Isn't it amazing though, that a player who just a few days ago had their leg gashed , smashed, hammered, almost broken and assaulted by Jamie Carrager, was fit enough to last over an hour and still managed to look pissed off when he was replaced (Oh and let's not forget, also this week, getting his agent to let everyone know he wants to play in Italia next season) What a guy!!
All those who were screaming about how awful Carragher is and pointing to that (now obviously photoshoppped) picture of the 'wound', should feel very embarassed.
Oh and Rafael/ Fabio/ Da silva/(WTF name do you use dude???) is a Leo Sayer lookalike if i ever saw one. Twin Turbos my arse. More like Carlos Fandango Super Wide Wheels.
The crap invincibles roll on !
The Bayern Inter game was DIFFERENT CLASS !!!! WOW !~!!

The worst United team since 1989. Any team with a cutting edge would have knocked them out tonight.
Please let them draw Barcelona, and laugh at the mayhem.

United were there for the taking. Very naive performance from a lot of our players.

United remind of a young adolescent who do just enough to get their pocket money every week, more efficient than a stoner with chores to complete before they pick up.

Javier Hernandez... Fantastic player, offered a lot more than Berbatov would have... Thoroughly impressed.
Did anyone notice Ray Wilkins drooling over everything Rooney did? Even some of his misplaced and overhit passes seemed to cause no end of excitement....

Have to say Rooney and Carrick had their best games for united in ages. Was still a pretty shaky performance though, especially at the back.

Based on the two performances against a mediocre Marseille side, I think any of the other teams would fancy Man Utd.

Chicharito looks a real star for us, movement is fantastic. Rooney had his best game for months too, although I thought Marseille were disappointing.
Anyone else annoyed by Ray Wilkins co-commentary slightly?

Considering Manchester was a village 200 years ago, I wouldn't say "ancient" is the right word. 😉 Unless you're one of them Sky viewers who thinks football began in 1992, in which case 200 years must seem impossibly long ago. 😛
Ah, love to the Wee Pea, but why were Rooney and Brown having a contest to see who could stress VDS out the most?

Fed up with this lucky team. as usual Man U played five minutes, scored and then did nothing. Sign of a great team, used to the success but what a boring team. Who' going to kick them and save football. Come on Barca!

how long can we get away with murder is beyond me. we are so poor in possession, i've never seen united like that. all that passes just to get rid of the ball... all that passes from the defenders to the forwards.... the midfielders absent.... there's no one in midfield to dictate the game. we badly need an organizer there.
      what a suffering!

Well done United, they might even make it to the semis, but Real Madrid or Barca will be far too good for them

      PaulLambert 15 March 2011 10:09PM

Not an overly convincing performance from United, and they rode their luck at times in terms of Marseille missing some good chances. But I wouldn't say they were lucky in the tie overall - because to lose your best defender to injury before the game, and then two right backs to injury during it, has to be seen as unfortunate in anyone's book. It pretty much meant Ferguson was prevented from making the tactical substitutions he might otherwise have in the last half an hour of the game.
And Vidic is a really big miss for them. There were a couple of times tonight when balls came into the box, and United's central defenders were slow to react to them, allowing Marseille attempts on goal. Where as Vidic (or Ferdinand) more than likely would've won those balls and cleared the danger.
But it didn't really matter in the end, because United had enough quality in the final third to outscore Marseillle. Another two goals for the irrepressible poacher Hernandez, and another assist for Wayne Rooney, who performed the deep lying forward role more than adaquately. And United could've had a couple more goals themselves but for some hesitance in the box.
Ultimately though, they're through to the next round, and that's the most important thing. By then they should have Vidic and Ferdinand back, and that'll make them a much tougher nut to crack.
It'll inevitably disappoint those who are continually predicting the decline that never quite seems to come - and who are continually made to look foolish therefore - but 'the worse United side in a long time' is in the semis of the F.A. Cup, the last eight of the Champions League, and still sits atop of the Premiership. That's more than can be said for quite a few other clubs.

The most pleasing aspect of tonight's performance is how it's upset the ABUs, who are going round in their best Postman Plod impression saying "hope they draw Barca *grump*"
      Haha.
