Goran Pandev scored a late winner Tuesday to send title holder Inter Milan into the quarterfinals of the Champions League with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Bayern Munich.
Pandev's goal in the 88th minute put the two teams level at 3-3 on aggregate, but Inter advanced on the away goals rule after losing the home leg 1-0.
Samuel Eto'o scored for Inter in the fourth minute, but Mario Gomez leveled in the 21st and Thomas Mueller put Bayern ahead in the 31st.
Wesley Sneijder scored in the 63rd to pull Inter level and Eto'o set up Pandev's winner with a good pass. Pandev drove a left-foot shot into the roof of the net from inside the penalty box.
''It's difficult to explain this game,'' Inter coach Leonardo said. ''It couldn't have started better for us, but then we gave them more room and that's when they are dangerous.
''It was tough, after losing in the last minute at home, to turn this game around. I always believed, however, and when we equalized at 2-2, I knew everything was possible. It was a really incredible game.''
Eto'o had also set up Sneijder's goal, the Dutchman finding the far corner of Thomas Kraft's goal with a shot from the edge of the area.
Bayern controlled the match for most of the first hour but then allowed Inter to come back.
''It's our own fault,'' Gomez said. ''It's a deep wound, because we played a grandiose 65 minutes.
''Maybe we were too sure of ourselves at the end. We were too passive, nobody took responsibility.''
Inter became only the second team to advance in the Champions League after losing the home leg. The first was Ajax Amsterdam in 1996, then coached by Louis van Gaal and now the outgoing Bayern coach.
Bayern will now end the season without a title, after completing the domestic double last season and reaching the final of the Champions League, where it lost 2-0 to Inter.
Van Gaal has been forced to leave the club at the end of the season, one year early.
''When we lose such a game it's very disappointing because it's our own fault,'' Van Gaal said. ''It's not the first time this season but we haven't learned from our mistakes.
''We created so many chances and didn't use them and we didn't defend well in the second half. That's how the opponent remains in the game. We can't say that Inter was better but we are the ones who are out.''
Inter got off to a perfect start, with Eto'o notching his eighth goal of the competition. Pandev sent in a through ball and the Cameroon striker beat the offside trap to slot the ball through the legs of Bayern goalkeeper Thomas Kraft.
Bayern took time to recover but when it did, the home side dominated Inter until the end of the first half. Inter's goal was also its only shot on target in the first 45 minutes.
Gomez equalized with his eighth Champions League goal after a mistake by Inter goalkeeper Julio Cesar.
Cesar let Arjen Robben's attempt from 20 meters (yards) bounce off his chest and Gomez pounced to hook the ball over the goalkeeper.
The Brazilian did well to punch away another effort by Gomez in the 26th minute, but he was helpless when Mueller put Bayern ahead.
Robben's pass struck the foot of Lucio and bounced straight into the path of Mueller, who had no trouble lifting the ball past Cesar.
Franck Ribery made a poor start, losing possession several times, but he recovered in style late in the first half.
The Frenchman easily went past Andrea Ranocchia and ran clear to face Cesar but the goalkeeper tipped Ribery's shot over the crossbar.
Ribery's cross to Gomez at the far post nearly produced a third for Bayern.
Gomez's effort found its way past Cesar, with the ball trickling across the goal. Ranocchia cleared from the line but his effort struck Mueller and the ball bounced off the post.
The goalscoring chances continued, with a late mistake by Ranocchia then turning into a perfect pass for Robben, who shot wide.
Ribery opened the way for Gomez at the start of the second half, but Cesar scooped the ball, while a tremendous volley by Gomez off a cross by Ribery in the 62nd was saved by Cesar.
At the other end, Pandev displayed superb control in taming a long pass, but his left-foot volley sailed high, then shot wide a few minutes later.
Sneijder had a good opportunity in the 73rd but also shot wide as Bayern lost its composure.
The match began with a minute of silence for the victims of the earthquake and tsunami disaster in Japan and Inter's late substitute Yuto Nagatomo stood in the center of the field with a Japanese flag at the end of the match.

Javier Hernandez's double sent Manchester United into the Champions League quarterfinals with a 2-1 victory over Marseille on Tuesday.
Having drawn the first leg 0-0, Hernandez put United ahead after five minutes after latching onto Wayne Rooney's cross.
The 15th goal of the Mexico striker's debut season for United came in the 75th minute, netting from close range after Ryan Giggs squared the ball into the penalty area.
''Javier has got great movement,'' Rooney said. ''Thankfully he is a finisher, which helps the team.''
But Marseille was given a route back into the game in the 83rd when Wes Brown headed into his own goal from Lucho Gonzalez's corner while under pressure from former United defender Gabriel Heinze.
''They put some good balls into the box and made it difficult for us,'' Rooney said. ''We knew they are a big, physical team with a lot of power, but thankfully we got through.''
But the victory in the last-16 phase came at a cost for United.
During the first half, John O'Shea was forced off with a hamstring injury and his replacement at right back, Rafael da Silva, went off with the same problem after the break.
Marseille went into the match on the back of five wins in six league games and having not conceded in five straight Champions League matches.
After Hernandez breached the French defense, United had the initial momentum and he tested goalkeeper Steve Mandanda in the 23rd minute when Rooney was again the provider.
Marseille was presented with an opportunity to level in the 32nd after Chris Smalling was penalized for a challenge on Andre-Pierre Gignac, but Lucho Gonzalez failed to take advantage and sent a free kick wide.
Another chance to equalize came before the break when Souleymane Diawara got on the end of a cross from Taye Taiwo but from six meters (yards) out - and unmarked - he headed wide.
After a bright start United found it hard to carve out any openings and Marseille came into the game late in the second half.
But Hernandez's fifth goal in five games secured United's passage in Europe despite the late own goal.
