Preview: United v Tottenham

Date, time and coverage: Wednesday 1 January, 17:30 GMT kick-off. The match will be shown live in the UK on BT Sport. You can also follow it via ManUtd.com’s rolling blog and MUTV Online’s radio commentary.
Form guide: Manchester United welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Old Trafford in the midst of an impressive run of form, having recorded six consecutive victories in all competitions. The Reds hope to improve that sequence against Spurs, who have been going through a time of transition following the sacking of manager Andre Villas-Boas on 16 December and subsequent appointment of Tim Sherwood. Since officially taking over, the former midfielder has guided the club to a draw with West Brom and a victory over Stoke. Prior to those results, Sherwood was caretaker boss for their last away match, an encouraging 3-2 win at Southampton.
Ins and outs: Wayne Rooney is set to return after missing Saturday’s trip to Hull City with a groin strain, while Antonio Valencia is also available after serving his one-match suspension. Rafael (groin), Phil Jones (knee), Nani (hamstring) and Robin van Persie (groin) are all likely to be out though injury. Tottenham could be without Jermain Defoe, Aaron Lennon and Moussa Dembele, who will all undergo late fitness tests. Andros Townsend, Younes Kaboul and Jan Vertonghen are also sidelined.

[h=1]Reds wait on Rooney[/h] David Moyes will wait until New Year's Day before deciding if Wayne Rooney is fit enough to play in United's evening encounter with Tottenham at Old Trafford.

Rooney missed last Saturday's 1-0 win at Norwich with a groin problem and will be assessed ahead of the match, which kicks off at 17:30 GMT. His fellow striker Robin van Persie looks less likely to feature against Spurs due to a thigh injury picked up in the win over Shakhtar Donetsk on 10 December.

"We need to wait and see," said Moyes on Rooney at his New Year's Eve press briefing at the Aon Training Complex. "He didn't train today so we'll assess him tomorrow and see how he is.

"Van Persie is not quite ready yet, but hopefully he's not too far away."

The Reds' first opponents of 2014 are under new management, with Tim Sherwood having permanently succeeded Andre Villas-Boas following a spell where the former Spurs and England midfielder was in temporary charge. The Portuguese's team played out a 2-2 draw with United at the start of December, but a 5-0 defeat at home to Liverpool two weeks later proved to be the former Chelsea boss' last game in charge. Moyes, however, is wary of his side's next opponents regardless of who his opposite number is.

"Tottenham have always been difficult opponents no matter who the manager has been," he added. "They have a really good side, spend well and always try to reward the manager with the players required. Tottenham have either been in the Champions League or pushing for it and have always been a good, strong team."
