bayern kafa huku anaongoza ball possession

Anthony Martial, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Romelu Lukaku ran riot at the VEB Arena.
Lukaku can't stop scoring
Lukaku started and finished the move for United's opener, spreading a sublime ball out wide to Martial, then nodding his cross in at the far post after four minutes. It was Lukaku's ninth goal in as many games for United and his seventh game in a row he has netted for club and country, before he added a second just before the half-hour, gifted by some shoddy CSKA defending. As well as his finishing being on point, Lukaku's work-rate, movement and speed of thought were impressive throughout.
United rediscovering their European swagger
The last time United look this dominant and assertive in Europe was during Sir Alex Ferguson's tenure. After his retirement, the Manchester club struggled in Europe’s premium competition, lacking the confidence and self-belief required to sweep aside the sort of teams they would traditionally cruise past. But under Mourinho the side have rediscovered their swagger. Against CSKA they dominated proceedings from the off, constantly keeping the ball moving against a team that were reduced to chasing shadows.
Martial makes himself undroppable
Anthony Martial was unlucky not to make United's starting line-up at Southampton last weekend, given his impressive form of late, but with Marcus Rashford also at the top of his game, Mourinho has been spoilt for choice. But Martial surely ended any debate over whether he deserves a regular starting place with another majestic display here, providing the assists for both of Lukaku's first-half goals and scoring himself from the penalty spot.
Rotation points to United squad strength
Mourinho opted to field a strong-looking starting XI, with the usual suspects back in the mix to face the Russian hosts. There were, though, a few tweaks here and there to the line-up which ultimately did little to lower the quality on offer. Indeed, Ander Herrera made his return to the side, having only made three league starts this season, while Martial was brought back into the fray. That Mourinho is able to bring players of their quality into contention points to the depth and strength of United's squad this season. With the long winter months fast approaching, this strength will undoubtedly prove vital.

Manchester United solve Mourinho's last problem and more CSKA talking points

Crossing problem solved

Juan Mata recently described United as a 'team of giants' and the concern in pre-season was they lacked a reliable crosser to cater for Romelu Lukaku, Marouane Fellaini et al. Jose Mourinho regularly spoke about his need for a fourth player, United had bids rejected for Internazionale's Ivan Perisic and failed to unsettle Gareth Bale at Real Madrid.

What Mourinho was also doing with his rhetoric was motivating some of United's younger players. The left wing pattern continued in Moscow as Anthony Martial returned to the line-up at the expense of Marcus Rashford and the Frenchman claimed two assists.

United have scored 10 goals from aerial deliveries already this term and it has been a joint effort. Ashley Young remains United's best crosser and it is a mark of his resurgence he was substituted early in the second-half to keep him fresh for Crystal Palace's visit on Saturday.

Martial has to start on Saturday

It was apparent before the CSKA tie this could be a significant week for Martial. He has not started successive fixtures for United since May and that run should end against Palace this weekend, while his form merits a return to the France national team.

Martial thrived in the 3-4-3 formation, which allowed him to cut inside with the security of a more natural winger overlapping him. That system might be the best for Martial and even if it does move Henrikh Mkhitaryan away from the playmaker role it does not entirely compromise the Armenian's influence.

He scored again at the VEB Arena and had Young on the outside, which encouraged him to stay central and operate in the area where those who know him best insist he is at his most 'dangerous'.

The front three should remain unchanged against the Premier League's basement club.

New formation suits United

The hopeless hosts and a careless late goal should not diminish the appreciation for United's latest formation change. The 3-4-3 look was the fourth different system Mourinho has used this season and Martial and Mkhitaryan were not the only players to be buoyed by it.

Ander Herrera had his best game of the season and Nemanja Matic was assured again in the formation which was the watershed moment in Chelsea's title-winning season under Antonio Conte. Paul Pogba might also find the formation workable when he returns from injury, although it seems particularly beneficial for disciplined holders like Matic and Herrera.

Herrera returns at the right time

Mourinho is pessimistic about Marouane Fellaini's chances of returning for United's last match before the October internationals but Herrera should remain in the line-up regardless of the Belgian's fitness.

Against fodder like Palace, United require a slick midfielder to spark attacks and maintain a high-tempo and Fellaini did not offer that as a starter against Everton or Southampton as he reverted to a more defensive-minded role.

Herrera was back to his best

Herrera instigated the move which led to Mkhitaryan's goal in Russia with a prompt pass and that urgency could put Palace on the back foot early on. The Basque's importance has predictably increased and he is well poised to start in United's away day openers at Liverpool and Benfica next month.

Young's resurgence continues

It was only 16 days ago that Young was making his first appearance since May. In the time that has elapsed the 32-year-old has established himself as a United first-teamer, assisted key goals and captained the team to another victory.

That Mourinho withdrew Young after 66 minutes was another reflection of his growing value to the United side. His movement which supported Mkhitaryan had an underrated impact on United's attack and his form merits an England recall.
