Juan Mata has revealed Louis van Gaal gives his players 'hugs and kisses' in training if they do something he likes.
The Spaniard was in and out of the team when the Dutchman first took over at Old Trafford.
But since March he has become a regular on the right side of midfield and has started all 13 games this season.
The 27-year-old, who has scored four goals so far this season, praised Van Gaal's 'honesty' with his players. But he admitted his manager can get a bit carried away when he sees something he likes.

Mata told the Times: "I really value his honesty. When someone does something in training that he really likes, he goes over to hug and kiss them – he really does it.
"Or he says in front of everyone, ‘You are the best in training, I'm really proud of how you played,' to set a a good example to others."

Mata celebrates scoring against Wolfsburg. "Van Gaal is how you see him in the press conferences, he's like that with us too.
"He's honest and straightforward. He believes in his style of training and way of preparing for games. He's won trophies everywhere he's been and hopefully this season now we know him better we'll win something too."

Shaw is walking with the aid of a brace Louis van Gaal has revealed Manchester United defender Luke Shaw is now walking with a brace as he continues his rehabilitation from a broken leg.
Shaw, who suffered a double break in United's Champions League defeat at PSV Eindhoven last month, is not expected to be available until March at the earliest.
The 20-year-old has been pictured on crutches in Manchester city centre and returned to Carrington two weeks ago to receive further treatment, and Van Gaal heralded the left-back's attitude as 'fantastic'.
"He is already here every day, walking with a brace and starting his rehabilitation. It is unbelievable," said Van Gaal.
"But he has a long way to go. At the moment, the progress is steep, but at the end it will be flat and that is difficult to maintain your mentality. But now he is fantastic."

Shaw, arguably United's player of the season before his traumatic night in Eindhoven, could also be available for England's Euro 2016 squad if his recovery goes smoothly.

Van Gaal, though, cautioned against premature predictions merely a month on from Shaw's break.
"You can not say that now he can go," Van Gaal added. "Like Roy Hodgson says 50-50 because it is possible, but it is dependent on the rehabilitation.

"Maybe there are complications, you never know, that happens a lot so we have to wait and see."

Van Gaal enjoyed United's win over Everton Louis van Gaal had one of his fan moments after United had beaten Everton.
As the Dutchman made his way in front of the corporate boxes at Goodison Park on his return from his post match press conference the Reds boss was spotted by United fans in the corporate boxes.
They rushed to the balconies and hung over the edge to see him. He high fived them, stretched up to grab programmes to autograph, stood grinning for the bank of mobile phone cameras that emerged and then strolled off waving as they sang "Louis van Gaal's Red and White army."He was loving it and the fans were loving it.
In pictures: Everton 0 United 3

It's a roller coaster world for the 64-year-old. As the fans clicked away and grabbed their souvenirs it was hard not to remind yourself that after the crushing defeat at Arsenal pre-international break October had suddenly become a potential month of destiny.
Not that the Old Trafford hierarchy would give up on their choice of boss but there was a growing suspicion that he might start losing his disciples and the serious doubters would have had enough.
Arriving at Goodison on Saturday there was a raft of various stats surrounding the fixture and none of them were favourable for the Reds. It was a tale of doom and gloom.

JS74622052.jpg
No wonder Van Gaal lapped up the post match adulation. This was one fixture United would not have wanted after the Emirates debacle.
Clearly Roberto Martinez's men are not the Gunners. They are not as fast, as slick or as clinical but they are no mugs.
The Reds were chastened by their London experience and you suspect Arsenal would not have had such a storming start had United begun at the Emirates the way they did at Goodison. They might not have led 2-0 after 22 minutes but they sure wouldn't have been 3-0 down after 20!

Van Gaal believes in the "total human principle" meaning he knows that footballers are not robots and have feelings like the rest of us. That is why Daley Blind and Memphis Depay were taken out of the firing line after the crushing despair and unforgiving post mortems following Holland's failure to qualify for Euro 2016.
The flip side of that at club level was that Morgan Schneiderlin, Ander Herrera and Marcos Rojo did not suffer in the spotlight at Arsenal and they were key to the activity in the opening minutes at Goodison as the first two scored and the Argentine had a hand in their creation. The day was finished off with Wayne Rooney re-writing those abysmal pre-match stats.
There have been many false dawns in the LVG era but with derby day on Sunday United can ill afford another.

United midfielder Herrera holds off Everton's Gareth Barry "I want to go to an away game with our fans one day, they're unbelievable," Ander Herrera beamed.
The Manchester United midfielder's mobile phone wallpaper once featured an evocative snapshot of the Gwladys Street End and on Saturday he scored in front of it. Following his weekend heroics, Herrera might have to wait a while before he enjoys an away day with Louis van Gaal's Red and White Army.
Elusive, dynamic and decisive, Herrera brought thrust to United's attack at Everton as he exhibited his credentials as Van Gaal's playmaker once again. United missed Herrera's aggression at Arsenal.
With 11 goals in 27 United starts, Herrera has emphatically justified United's insistence on signing a player scouted by Sir Alex Ferguson and David Moyes but bought under Van Gaal's stewardship, albeit while he coached the Netherlands in Brazil.

A footballer who loves fan culture, the addition of the likeable Herrera was a tonic for United supporters who had watched a squad ridden with wantaways, upstarts and the avaricious finish seventh under Moyes.
"Louis van Gaal is always asking us to be close to the people," Herrera told the M.E.N. in February. Like Ruud van Nistelrooy and Patrice Evra, he is an outsider who has read up on United's history and gets the club.

GettyImages-493045606.jpg
Herrera celebrates his third goal of the season Herrera is the energetic midfielder United were deprived of for the best part of a decade. He creates goals, scores goals and is a meaty midfielder who had the distinction of ending Steven Gerrard's last game against United after 38 seconds.
Surging forward to finish expertly, his third of the season at Everton was reminiscent of Paul Scholes in his pomp but some of Herrera's traits suggest he is the player who represents United supporters on the pitch. As home and away matchgoer Andy Hodson remarked after March's Anfield win: "Herrera was the first United midfielder to go there and give it them for 15 years. I love him."

JS59699281.jpg
Herrera rattles Gerrard at Anfield An obvious victim of Van Gaal's reversion to 4-2-3-1 in pre-season, Herrera has demonstrated in his six starts this term he is the nimblest and most productive playmaker Van Gaal has to rely on. Memphis was ambushed, Adnan Januzaj dawdled, Juan Mata floundered and Wayne Rooney reaffirmed he is too tactically indisciplined to return to the role he was developed for as a teenager.
Just consider Herrera's impact since Van Gaal pushed him forward for the second-half in Bruges season: three goals and two assists in six games. Herrera's eight Premier League goals have come from 10 attempts on target.

GettyImages-493048330.jpg
Herrera proved his point to Van Gaal at Everton "It was a fantastic performance and I was very happy with him, but I maybe need him on Wednesday so I had to spare him," Van Gaal said of the Basque's substitution. Music to Herrera's ears.
The 26-year-old's progress can also be gauged by his vocalness. Jesse Lingard had received his interval instructions from Frans Hoek at Everton and was warmly welcomed by encouraging teammates on just his second United appearance. Herrera, only three years older, offered avuncular advice and gave Lingard the player's eye view like a grizzled veteran. Lingard got the message and defended diligently, as the bright Brendan Galloway dimmed on the left.

GettyImages-493049662.jpg
Lingard defended diligently down United's right Whatever United's shape or system, Herrera, accompanied by Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger, has to be United's midfield trio. Backed by two defensive-minded teammates, Herrera could develop into a full-time playmaker in a formidable triumvirate.
His manager's treatment of him has almost been as rough as Boris Johnson's barge on that Japanese schoolboy, when Herrera is the player who makes United tick. Van Gaal's man-management of the Spaniard during the international fortnight was exceptional, though.

PA-24458954.jpg
Herrera kisses Mata as he celebrates scoring the second goal Herrera enjoyed a weekend break in Venice and had five days of training to capitalise on his teammates' international commitments to prove he merited a starting role at Goodison Park. Marcos Rojo, who was granted permission to enjoy a mini-break with his family at Disneyland Paris, also benefited. The scrutinised Argentine produced his best performance in a red shirt at left-back.

Arguably man of the match in United's April Old Trafford derby victory over City, Herrera's selection for Sunday's corresponding fixture could be pivotal. Ever the hard taskmaster, when asked about Herrera's role at Goodison Van Gaal did not squirm like Camila Batmanghelidjh.
"When Herrera is playing like that it is difficult to not select him, but I can do it."
Herrera can always stand with the fans.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - OCTOBER 17: Ander Herrera of Manchester United reacts during the Barclays Premier League match between Everton and Manchester United at Goodison Park on October 17, 2015 in Liverpool, England. (Photo by Clive Brunskill/Getty Images) [h=3]Van Gaal MUST stick with Herrera[/h] Louis van Gaal took the unusual step of singling out one player for praise in lauding Ander Herrera's performance at Goodison Park - but the Manchester United manager was quick to remind his midfielder that his position still isn't secure.
That prompted something of a backlash from United fans on social media, who have taken Herrera to their hearts.
The Spaniard showed exactly what he can bring to Van Gaal's side, adding an attack thrust in midfield.
His run and headed finish had a touch of Paul Scholes about it - and his through-ball for Wayne Rooney's goal was perfectly-weighted.
In this kind of form, he simply cannot be dropped.

JS74622461.jpg
[h=3]The response of champions[/h] Van Gaal left his players in no doubt as to what was expected after the chastening defeat to Arsenal.
He insisted that if they wanted to be champions, they had to act like champions.
Not many visitors will come away from Goodison as such emphatic victors.
This was among the most complete performances from a United side since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement and suggested Van Gaal's team can be genuine title challengers.

JS74620201.jpg
[h=3]Wingless wonders[/h] Casting an eye over the team sheet before kick off, United's lack of width stood out.
With Memphis Depay dropped to the bench and Ashley Young injured, Van Gaal deployed Anthony Martial and Juan Mata on the wings.
What followed was one of United's most fluid attacking displays.
Martial's very presence was enough to concern Everton's defence, while Matteo Darmian and Marcos Rojo pressed high up the pitch.
With Herrera running from deep-lying positions, it was a performance full of attacking threat.

JS74623201.jpg
[h=3]Rojo may have won Van Gaal round[/h] This was just the performance Argentine international Marcos Rojo needed.
The defender angered his manager over his failure to make the pre-season tour to the US, prompting speculation over his long-term United future.
But at a time when Van Gaal is trying to figure out how to fill the void left by Luke Shaw, he produced one of his best displays for United, assisting in the goals for Morgan Schneiderlin and Herrera.

[h=3]Have Everton fans buried the hatchet?[/h] Wayne Rooney is usually afforded a red hot reception by his former fans at Goodison - but they were positively indifferent on the day.
Perhaps they no longer consider him a threat?
As such, his goal just after the hour was a reminder of his enduring potency.
Can Van Gaal afford to drop Herrera? Have your say

Louis van Gaal has predicted a goal spree for Wayne Rooney after the Manchester United striker ended his Everton hoodoo.
The 29-year-old scored for the first time against his former club at Goodison since 2007.
It was his sixth goal for United this season to round off a 3-0 win for Van Gaal's men.

JS74620201.jpg
And his manager believes this could be a turning point after what has been a frustrating campaign so far for the forward.
"You are always doubting him," said the the Dutchman. "He scored now.
"I am very happy for him. For me it is not important if he scores or not scores.
"He has to be an attacking point and do his job in the defensive organisation.

JS74630482.jpg
"I am also happy when (Ander) Herrera is scoring and (Anthony) Martial is scoring.
"Maybe it is the start for many goals because he needs this goal, I think."
Van Gaal was also delighted with United's response to the 3-0 defeat to Arsenal before the international break.
"It is more than a response," he said. "That is an understatement, but I cannot find another word.

JS74621010.jpg

"It was very difficult to prepare this match because we have lost against Arsenal in a horrible way.
"It was a very good performance and I have said to my players that I was very proud of them because it is one of our best matches."

Memphis has struggled for form since he joined United Louis van Gaal has warned Memphis he must not make the same mistakes Angel di Maria did at Manchester United.
Memphis was dropped to the substitutes' bench for United's impressive 3-0 win at Everton on Saturday and the £25m forward has struggled for form since his summer transfer.
United assistant manager Ryan Giggs is understood to have given Memphis a pep talk about his attitude, though Van Gaal 'did not want to discuss' reports about the 21-year-old's behaviour.
Di Maria was sold after a chastening season in which Van Gaal suggested he had failed to adapt to his 'philosophy' and the United manager has issued a stern warning to Memphis.
"Some players cannot adapt to the team philosophy," Van Gaal told the Sunday newspapers. "That you cannot know in advance. You have to see that.

"Because you see a lot of qualities in a player, but he has to put that quality in service of your team.
"That also happened with Ángel di María and [Radamel] Falcao – both great players but you have to fit in with the philosophy. Not only with Memphis, with every player that we have bought."

GettyImages-491284784.jpg
Memphis has scored four goals this season but just one in the Premier League "Ryan has already given advice to him but the player is responsible for his own deeds.
"You have to give respect to your team philosophy."

Louis van Gaal insists he can still drop Ander Herrera - even after his outstanding performance in Manchester United's 3-0 win against Everton.
Herrera was handed his first Premier League start in over a month - and responded with a goal and an assist at Goodison Park.
Van Gaal made a point of singling the Spaniard out for praise - but made it clear that the 26-year-old's position in the team still isn't secure.
Asked if Herrera could be dropped after such a performance, the Dutchman said: "That is dependable on the game-plan on how we play and how the opponent is playing.

JS74622461.jpg
"That is why I have selected this line up today.
"That is dependable on the qualities of the opponent. When Herrera is playing like that it is difficult to not select him, but I can do it."
Still Van Gaal lauded Herrera's contribution.

JS74623201.jpg

"I have seen a lot of individual players today who are playing very good, but that is also because the result is very good," he said. "When I have to mention one name, I have to mention Ander Herrera.
"He played very well and had a great contribution with the goals."
