England U21s manager Gareth Southgate has been instructed by Manchester United to not reveal the full details of Luke Shaw‘s current injury problems which led to him being left out of the U21s squad for this summer’s European Championships

The 19-year-old suffered from concussion against Crystal Palace and subsequently missed the home game against Arsenal as he ther failed to recover from the head injury he suffered.

However, there are suggestions that Shaw’s injury could be worse than previously thought and it has led to Louis van Gaal protecting him by keeping the news out of the press.
When asked if he felt Shaw could recover from concussion in time for the European Championships, Southgate said: “I cannot answer that. These young players are not ours, we don’t own them.”

The Reds will need to get through a two-legged qualifying play-off to be in the hat for the group stage. The draw for the play-off takes place on Friday 7 August with the first leg to be played on 18/19 August and the second leg scheduled for 25/26 August.
The play-off round will be divided into two sections with a ‘Champions Route' and a ‘League Route'. The first section features clubs who have won the domestic league in some of Europe's lesser-known nations, while the second section, which United will be in, involves clubs that finish second, third or fourth in the more prominent European leagues. A seeding system, based on the UEFA Club Coefficient, should work in the Reds' favour and mean United are seeded; indeed van Gaal's team are likely to be the highest-ranked side in the play-off round and should therefore avoid some more well-known opposition
