When I observe young people passing elders in the street I notice they great them with what sounds like "Ma-La" when greeting Mamas and "Ba-La" when greeting Babas.

I was once told it's a show of respect akin to shikamoo but it's shortened slang for the native greeting. Mama La**** and Baba La****.

Does anybody here know what the full greeting is??? Asante!

It turns out it's not Kiswahili at all. It's a tribal language called Iraq. What why are saying is Mamma Laway and Babba Laway.

Asante Sana!
