Tottenham shattered their club transfer record once again as they splashed out £60m on Willian and Erik Lamela - paving the way for Gareth Bale to confirm his £104m move to Real Madrid by the end of the week, reports the Daily Express.

Brazilian Willian completed a £30m move from Anzhi Makhachkala , while Argentine winger Lamela is today expected to seal a £29.9m transfer from AS Roma.

Real's £18m defender Fabio Coentrao is close to agreeing a switch and, with Bale valued at £86m, the package has reached the £104m fee Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has placed on the Welshman.

Manchester United keen on Juan Mata

Manchester United have made an informal inquiry to Chelsea about the possibility of bringing Juan Mata to Old Trafford this transfer window, sources from both clubs have told ESPN.

It is unknown at this point whether the contact has been part of the ongoing Wayne Rooney saga, or whether the English champions would be open to a long-mooted straight swap between the players, just that their interest has been piqued and they believe a deal could be possible.

Word from Chelsea throughout the summer has been that Mata is simply not for sale, and he is understood to be one of owner Roman Abramovich's three favourite players at Stamford Bridge.

An undercurrent of the summer, however, has been that manager Jose Mourinho is not as keen on the Spanish playmaker. Although the Portuguese boss is fully prepared to use him as one of the primary attacking players in his first-choice XI, Mourinho is said to think that off-loading Mata may not be the worst decision if it ensured strengthening elsewhere - especially up front.

Chelsea’s reported interest in Anzhi Makhachkala's Willian has only added to the uncertainty.

It is also understood that Romelu Lukaku had been broached as a potential makeweight in any deal for Rooney, but his exit from Chelsea seems exceptionally unlikely. Similarly, United's stance remains the same: Rooney is not for sale.

The Old Trafford club remain relaxed about eventually bringing in Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines from Everton before the end of window, but their pursuit of Luka Modric has stalled. Carlo Ancelotti sees the midfielder as a key player for Real Madrid this season, with that only accentuated by Xabi Alonso's metatarsal injury.

Jose Mourinho has indicated that £30m Anzhi Makhachkala midfielder Willian will choose Chelsea over Tottenham.

Willian, 25, had undergone a medical with Spurs, but could now sign for the Blues after they entered the race for his signature on Thursday.

When asked whether the Brazilian had chosen to make the move to Stamford Bridge, Mourinho nodded.
The Chelsea boss added: "I know what the player wants, so in this moment we cannot hide. That is a possibility."

Willian joined Anzhi in January for a reported £30m after five-and-a-half seasons at Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk. But he has become available as the Russian side attempt to cut costs after a change in strategy by their owner.

Tottenham had expected to break their transfer record and make Willian their fifth major summer signing.
But Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich intervened, using his contacts at Anzhi to offer a similar fee to Tottenham but with more lucrative add-ons.

Willian has not yet agreed personal terms at the Blues. It is understood he is attracted by the chance to play Champions League football, compete for the Premier League title and work under Mourinho.

"I couldn't say much in previous news conferences," Mourinho said.
"I have to answer your questions and try to be honest, but at the same time try to hide a few things.

"I'm happy with my squad, but every one of us managers, we say we are happy, but we are always unhappy.
"We always want something of more quality and we never close the door to the possibility of adding more quality."

Willian's arrival would not see the departure of Juan Mata. Reports in Friday's newspapers said the Spain midfielder could be offered to Manchester United as part of a bid to sign Wayne Rooney.

"No, [it is] speculation," said Mourinho. "He's a player we all like, he's a player we all want to keep and we want more quality in the team."

Mourinho earlier this week suggested Chelsea would make a fresh bid for striker Rooney, 27, after their match with Manchester United on Monday.
Asked on Friday how he rated his chances of signing Rooney, Mourinho said: "I don't care. In this moment I don't care. I have a big match to play on Monday."
