Parliament raises the alarm on human rights in Tanzania 🚨
Members of the European Parliament adopted two resolutions on the human rights situation in Tanzania following October’s elections.
• Members condemn the violent post-election crackdown, which left thousands dead or injured, with reports of mass graves.
• Parliament criticised the arbitrary detention of opposition leader Tundu Lissu and called for his immediate and unconditional release.
• Members want a fair and independent investigation into killings, enforced disappearances, torture and other violations.
Parliament called for the Commission and Council to halt direct support to Tanzanian authorities, prioritising support for civil society and journalists, and consider sanctions on those responsible.
Parliament also passed a non-binding resolution urging the Commission to withdraw its 2025 Tanzania funding plan over concerns about these recent democratic and human rights violations.
