BWM is a bulldozer, with too much confidence in himself. Intellectually he is, of course, shoulder higher than JK. And he took his job much more seriously.
I believe his over confidence made him ignore Nyerere's edict that Ikulu is a sacred abode. He abused Ikulu. He converted it into a den of hungry, ruthless, ammoral speculators, local and foreign, determined to carve out the natural resources of our land between themselves, to the exclusion of the helpless valid owners, the wananchi of Tanzania. This was sacrilege.
He ignored pleas, local and foreign, that Tz was too poor to afford purchasing that sophisticated radar and the ultra-modern presidential plane; instructing his Minister to arrogantly and impudently tell us that we may have to feed on grass so that the equipment will be bought. That was an insult I will never forget. Indeed it has now come to pass, that a large number of Tanzanians are now even hungrier than they were during his era, and are in for grass because of the scarcity of food!
BWM bulldozed the giving away of government houses meant for its employees, for peanuts, as though on his retirement, government would wound up! Worse still, he arrogated to himself, his family and friends, the government-owned US$ 4 billion Kiwira Coalfields for a mere US$ 700,000 and decided to pay only US$ 70,000 as first and only installment. It is a relief to fair-minded patriotic Tanzanians that J.K.'s Government is planning to revoke this dirty, uncouth deal and repossess Kiwira Coalfields.
It is true that BWM exercised his powers to make some aspects of our economy grow somewhat. But prabably prodded by a partner-in-life with insatiable appetite for wealth and riches, he erred in a deplorable manner; and for this, he is personally accountable. For this, the Constitution and the law must take their course.
