Privatisation looms for Air Tanzania

The government has said Air Tanzania Corporation, will be privatised when it gets financially strong enough.
Infrastructure Development minister Andrew Chenge announced the plans at the climax of celebrations to mark the International Day of Air Transportation held at the Mwalimu Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam yesterday.
The national carrier entered into a partnership with South African Airways in 2002 but the marriage crumbled last year, with reports saying the joint venture arrangement was a flop.
Chenge said the government withdrew from the partnership to enable the corporation run on its own ``in line with the 2003 national transportation policy``.
He explained that part of the thrust of the policy is to ensure better and safer domestic and international transportation by making improvements in all relevant sectors, including aviation, so as to boost the national economy.
The minister pledged full government cooperation with the ATC board of directors and management in helping the corporation grow rapidly and smoothly enough to make profitable business before it is sold off to competent investors.
The government would always make sure that infrastructures are improved as much as possible using locally available resources and collaborating with the country`s development donors, he added.
He revealed that, in line with the government`s decision to upgrade the country`s airports, the second phase of the rehabilitation of infrastructure at the Mwalimu Nyerere International Airport at a cost of about euro 25 million would start next April.
The World Bank has already issued a loan to enable the government to rehabilitate to tarmac level runways at Arusha, Bukoba, Kigoma, Mafia, Shinyanga, Sumbawanga and Tabora airports.
Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority Director General Margaret Munyagi meanwhile said that the agency would continue working hard in regulating the aviation sector to make it attract more players.
She said part of their strategy was to ensure that air transport in the country is safe and efficient.
`If well used, the aviation industry can become a key contributor to the country`s economy. We, as regulators, will make sure the goals are achieved by working closely with all stakeholders and putting in place a conducive environment in the industry,` she added.
Munyagi called on the government to invest more in infrastructure, mainly by concentrating on the building of modern airports and upgrading existing ones.
