English Comment: Denilson Is Right, Cesc Fabregas Is Not The Natural Leader Arsenal Desperately Need

Cesc Fabregas may be Arsenal's best player, but Denilson is right - he is not a natural leader and the Gunners desperately need one.

The Brazilian midfielder won't have made any friends with the frank assessment of his club's captain but in highlighting the role of his Spanish team-mate he has struck at the heart of Arsenal's current predicament.

Highly talented and oh-so easy on the eye to watch, Arsene Wenger has assembled some of the greatest exponents of the passing game. But to what end?

It's five years and counting now since the Gunners last felt the sweet taste of trophy success – 68 long months since Patrick Vieira held the FA Cup aloft at the Millennium Stadium.

For all the intricate football and an unswerving devotion to the beautiful game it is useless beauty - a façade which fails to mask the fact that Wenger's policy is a failing one and his captain must take his fair share of the blame.

Invariably the best player on the pitch, a game changer but, crucially, the 23-year-old is not a leader.

"Fabregas is the captain but he is not a leader." Denilson summed up the north Londoners' situation succinctly.

"It's a personality thing and a leader can be young. It's something they are born with.

"We are lacking leadership and we need leadership to go forward. There isn't a leader. I don't see one player as a leader.

"At Arsenal it's more of a collective team at the moment, everyone is talking - but a leader is always important for a team."

Frustration | Denilson bemoans lack of leadership​

The Brazilian makes a smart observation, Arsenal are a "collective", not a bad attribute, this is a team game after all. But what the Arsenal team are missing is an individual who can help them take the next step.

A general to marshal the collective of talented individuals, inspire and lead through the tricky winter nights away against lower league opposition. Someone who wouldn't his allow charges to make elementary mistakes.

In recent memory Arsenal have boasted some of the very best leaders in the game – Tony Adams and Patrick Vieira to name but two. Talented individuals who also boasted the ability to galvanise the 11 on the pitch, lead by example and shepherd his team-mates.

"While Gallas' outbursts were divisive, it was symptomatic of a passionate outburst that Fabregas would never countenance"​

And that's not to say that Fabregas doesn't inspire, he's just a victim of circumstance. He was handed the captain's armband at the tender age of 21, a huge responsibility at a club of Arsenal's size.

Wenger saw fit to hand the young Spaniard the role following William Gallas' verbal attack on his team-mates following the dramatic 4-4 draw with Tottenham in October 2008.

And while Gallas' outbursts were divisive, it was symptomatic of a passionate outburst that Fabregas would never countenance.

While you can't condone a player publicly criticising his team-mates, you can't deny this current Arsenal team require an injection of passion.

The Gunners' metronomic style will nine times out of 10 undo even the most resilient of defences, but what of that one time when they don't?

Where is the man who will urge his players on, encourage that one final effort, demand the required concentration and commitment?

You can never doubt the Arsenal's captain's qualities, he broke his right leg then used it to score the penalty which sealed the Gunners' dramatic fightback against Barcelona in last season's Champions League. But is he able to inspire the best in others?

Granted, Arsenal have gone mightily close in the years following the cup success in south Wales – notably the Champions League final in Paris - and have suffered their share of bad luck with injuries.

But the inescapable truth is that this Arsenal really should have won some silverware, and with Fabregas in the team they will always challenge for honours, but they need an extra impetus to achieve glory.

As Denilson says: "We need leadership to go forward," but if Wenger fails to make decisive changes his team will come up short time and again, for the same reasons.

It's not Fabregas' fault the Gunners have remained trophyless for so long, yet if he continues as captain Arsenal will remain the peacocks of the Premier League - all show, yet without any end product.
