Arsene Wenger has defended his ability to manage Arsenal saying if he is tactically useless then he has hidden it very well.
A section of the clubs supporters made their views on the Frenchman known during Arsenals 1-0 Premier League win over West Brom on Saturday after revealing a banner that read: Arsene. Thanks for the memories but its time to say goodbye.
The Gunners boss was asked about the banner during his post-match press conference, but refused to comment on the issue before then responding to criticism he has received for Arsenals tricky start to the season.
The Frenchman has now defended his position at the north London outfit once more, insisting that he does his job with total commitment.
Look, in the last 15 years we are qualified for the last 16 in the Champions League. Give me another club who has done that, Wenger said. Asked about what he could do to respond to fans criticism of his managerial abilities, Wenger replied: I can do my job. I do my job with total commitment, I would like you to live with me and see for seven days what kind of work we produce and you will see that it is total commitment.
After then insisting he wasnt hurt by fans doubting him, Wenger went on to say: I started to manage a team at the top level in 1983. If I am completely useless tactically, I am a genius. I can hide it very well.
No matter what opposition fans threw at Arsenal supporters over the past nine years, they always had one sure-fire response, one that no other club could match or refute.
Is yours gold? That was it, it was that simple.Ten years ago Arsenal were presented with a specially-commissioned gold Premier League trophy because of their immense achievement of winning the league title without losing a single game. It was a remarkable achievement, one that will only seem more and more impressive with the passing of time.
Over recent years, while Arsenal looked to clear stadium debt and weren't doing too well on the old trophy-haul front, the first day of the season when every team had lost at least one game became known, slowly, as ‘Invincibles Day' – the day that marked the fact that no team could emulate the Gunners unbeaten league run for yet another season.
Now we just in to December and Chelsick wheels have started to come off.
Worse than not losing a game, they haven't really looked like losing one, although they perhaps offered some hope by looking leggy in their goalless draw against Sunderland on Saturday. Them completing the season unbeaten is a frightening prospect and Invincibles Day doesn't look like it will be arriving any time soon. It is unlikely that Jose Mourinyo's men will be able to go through a league season unbeaten.
Because the Invincibles happened in recent memory it is easy to gravely underestimate how hard it is to actually do that. Of course, I once famously predicted that there was absolutely no way that Chelsick would beat Barcelona over two legs to reach the Champions League final. When they did that I was adamant that they couldn't possibly overcome Bayern Munich in their own ground and become the first team from London to collect the big-eared trophy.
So I've learned that when it comes to Chelsick that anything is impossible.
If one team under one manager were to be the ones to take Arsene Wenger's record from him then it would certainly be somebody else and not Mourinyo and Chelsick.
But it won't happen.
It can't.
And anyway, if it does, at least we did it first, right?
