Zimbabwe: The turmoil, reconciliation, and the future!

Mzalendo Halisi..mpaka lini tutaacha kuwalaumu wazungu kwa ujinga wetu? we should get life people!!!! Leo bongo matumizi ya kawaida ya ikulu na ofisi nyingine..ni makubwa kuliko health services na mengineyo...kesho watu wakifa (as they always do anyway)..unajua tunapoint vidole wapi? to the policies of IMF and WB!! Indeed Africans are DUMB!!! Mugabe is just a failed human being and he should accept so. Yaani na hardship ya wazimbabwe bado watu wanamtetea BOB? lets have solidarity with Zimbabweans and not Mugabe.. I earnestly believe..Mugabe has honourably and willingly presided over the death of his own country-as it is for many African leaders.... HE SHOULD GO AND BE TRIED IN THE HAGUE! If need be.

As for reemerging of Zim as a giant...History has testified that, with zeal, selfless dedication, and visionary and responsible dictatorship, another world is possible-unfortunately not in Africa and I dont think Zimbabwe will be the exception of the failed policies and vision of African leaders!

mikuki,
makosa yanayofanyika ni kugeuza suala hilo kuwa "about Mugabe." That is when things get personal na wananchi wanaumia.

Joka Kuu, its extremely hard and next to impossible kuangalia swala la Zim bila kuchambua personalities.....maana ndo wanapreside hizi sera na mengineyo. Ni kweli, ni vema kumtofautisha Mgabe na Zim but how? by the way..yuko kwenye mkakati wa kugombea tena....(after all chama kimesema...tutafika kweli?)

mikuki,

Hahahaha..Joka Kuu, you must be joking by uttering this statement! I honestly believe you dont mean it!

mikuki,
yes, i meant what I said.

Mzalendo Halisi..mpaka lini tutaacha kuwalaumu wazungu kwa ujinga wetu? we should get life people!!!! Mikuki,
Nikuulize? Wewe unadhani Mugabe ana nia mbaya kuwatesa wananchi wake? Sii walipigania uhuru kwa pamoja? Na ndo baba wa Taifa kama sikosei!
Anapenda na kufurahi kuwaona na njaa? anapenda inflation iwe juu? Ili yeye kama raisi afaidi nini?
Mugabe aliingilia maslahi ya watu wa magh. end of 1990s over question of land- kwa hiyo wakawa hawamtaki.
Akapigana nao na sasa bado anapigana nao! Ndo wakamwekea vikwazo! Why was Mugabe voted as best African Leader in mid 1990s? So what went wrong?
Mkuki you can not discuss the crisis in Zimbabwe without relating it to Western Interest in Zimbabwe.
Mbona madiktator wengi Africa?
Ndo maana SADC wantumia quite diplomacy!
Mugabe hawachukii wananchi wake!! Hebu angalia NewAfrican Issues- in 2005 na 2006(ngoja nitakupatia mwiezi baadae)
!

Waungwana..I fully agree culpability by western countries in the current messy in Zim. But hey wait a minute. What Mgabe did was a populace move to win election in 2000. Ni kweli alitaka kurudisha ardhi kwa wazawa, but how and when, was the deadliest mistake he made. wengi walishaliongelea humu na wala hatuna haja ya kurudia.

NO!!!

So quite diplomacy is just a hoax! Mugabe has outlived his usefulness he should go. Though sio gurantee kwamba things will normalize soon, but atleast kuna mtu ataelewa kwamba ZIM is not a private company rather its a country of all Zimbabweans. Anayesema kwamba Mugabe agombee tena wananchi waamue...He might be to the point..After all hata Nyerere alikuwa anagombea uraisi kwa kushindana na UKUTA na wananchi tulikuwa tunaamua!!!

Ndo maana inaniwia vigumu kuwaelewa hawa wanaojifanya Pan Africanist akina Ankomaah..wanapiga kelele wakiwa London kwenye viyoyozi, watoto wao wakila shule za uhakika.. na wala si kwao Ghana...wanasahau kwamba Uingereza wanayoitukana ime-gurantee hata huo uhuru wa kuitukana serikali. Mbona kama kweli wanaona Africa tunaonewa..kwa nini asiandike mawazo yake akiwa Ghana kwao au Zimbabwe kwa rafiki yake Bob?.....kila mtu ana mtizamo tofauti..ila waafrica tumezidi kwa double standards..na Iam sure unless we come back to our senses..tutaendelea hivi hivi kupiga kelele na kutoa tuhuma tuuuu. Tunataka sovereignity, ipi hiyo?.. I can sadly say....Uhuru wa Mwafrika bado.

MKUKI,
UKWELI in whose perspective? Ukweli kwa watu kama Mugabe utabaki kwamba he was a Pan Africanist aliyepigana. Vitabu vya historia by Pan African Scholars will exalt him.
Ukisema he used land issue to win 2000 elections- well mbona the same Mugabe alishinda kwa kishindo 1990 na 1995? That was a political tactic- sema why 2000 and not earlier? May he miscalculated.
Recall Nkrumah was deposed 1966 for the same reasons- Western interests!
Mimi naona ni vigumu to reduce all the problems in Zim to failure ya Mugabe!
History will tell!

Nilisema huyu bwana aondoke mapema at 83 years hana jipya.

wala sikumwaga manyanga ila nilikuwambia kuwa I was more than ready to have a debate with you on this issue lakini mwenzangu ukaamua kunimwagia ma news articles bila ya kuja na counter argument zaidi ya articles

Hapo ndipo nikaona bora nikuachie uendelee

bado mnajibizana na articles za magazeti? Etc.

Mambo ambayo unaona ni propaganda ndiyo ukweli on the ground, iko siku utaona ukweli kwa sababu ukweli siku zote hushamiri.

Ati Western wana interests zao pale, zipi hizo?

Tabasamu,
Western interests to Zim are historical- it was a British colony- and if you happened to visit Zim in 1990s you would agree Zim was economic hub of South African Region after SA. Western interests in terms of many aspects including population, agriculture, infrastructure, investment, sports (rugby) ... you name it.
I am not trying to be a reductionist- to attribute all problems of Zim today to West. Mugabe and other Zimbabweans have a share to contribute.
In a nutshell the western interests --if you ask me--- herald more weight than other internal dynamics which occurred in Zim. And caused by Mugabe and his associates per see!
Remember in Africa, there are so many other dictators- but they have been 'a darling to the West' that is why they are there! If you will recall Mobutu and Siyyed Bare used to be close friends of US- until when after cold war, when they were seen useless- and later on deposed!
We can not blame West for everything- on the situation in Zim- I will stand with Mugabe- may be because of his age he has to look for a successor!
Mzalendohalisi!

Police close Zimbabwe university

Police have evicted some 4,000 students from the main university in Zimbabwe's capital, Harare, after violent clashes. The students were given just 30 minutes to leave their halls of residence but lectures are expected to continue, with exams set to start next week.

Sunday's protests came after the university authorities charged extra fees because the term was extended following a strike by lecturers. This is the latest sign of Zimbabwe's economic crisis. "It's not our fault that the lecturers went on strike and we were saying why should we be made to pay," student Chadwick Rugube told the AFP news agency.

'Heartless'

While the university authorities say lectures will continue, student union spokesman Benjamin Nyandoro said many students had nowhere else to stay. "The majority of those who stay on campus have no homes, friends or relatives in Harare so they are going to sleep in the open," he told AFP.

"It just shows how heartless the authorities are. Some of us are starting examinations next week and this is going to affect us psychologically." University of Zimbabwe Vice-Chancellor Professor Levy Nyagura told the state-owned Herald newspaper that the students were paying almost nothing and so should not complain.

"These are unbelievable students who want to live on a Z$1,000 meal [US$4 at the official rate, 1 US cent on the black market]. Where in Zimbabwe can you get a meal for Z$1,000?" Zimbabwe has the world's highest rate of inflation at more than 3,700%.
The Herald reports that "almost 10" top businessmen remain in police custody after being arrested for selling goods above official prices. Some major firms were fined for not displaying prices, as the government has ordered as part of its attempts to reduce inflation.

Mzalendohalisi!

The lure of plentiful South Africa
By Peter Biles
BBC News, South Africa

The economic crisis in Zimbabwe is having a severe impact on its neighbour, South Africa. An estimated three million Zimbabweans are thought to have fled to South Africa to escape the chaos and they continue to flood across the border at Beit Bridge. The Limpopo River, famously described by Kipling as "great, grey-green and greasy", forms the border between Zimbabwe and South Africa - two close neighbours, but now a world apart. Zimbabwe is on its knees. Its people are starving and desperate. South Africa is seen as the land of opportunity. And the bright lights of this economic giant beckon.

_44010435_zim203bridge.jpg

The original Beit Bridge was erected in 1929 and a new one built in 1995

Old barriers

It is winter here now and this is the dry season. That is good news for the thousands of mainly young Zimbabwean men prepared to take the risk of crossing the Limpopo. They come down to the river bank on the Zimbabwean side, sometimes in large groups. Then they disperse. They are able to wade across, but they need to keep a look-out for crocodiles in the shallow water. When they reach the South African side, they dry themselves down and edge nervously towards South Africa's triple-layer border fence.

_44012914_sa_zim_beit_203.gif

This is a barrier that was put up in the days of apartheid - when the country's white rulers tried to stop the guerrillas of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the armed wing of the ANC, from infiltrating from Zimbabwe.

Border jumpers

But these days, the security is not as formidable as it looks.
The illegal migrants from Zimbabwe approach the first fence and cut the wire mesh or burrow in the sandy soil to open a gap underneath. Then, using their bolt-cutters, they make their way through rolls of razor wire. And finally, they penetrate another layer of fencing. By this stage, one of the Zimbabweans is probably leading the way as a scout. But the "border jumpers" are rarely deterred.

In daylight, with my car parked on a quiet narrow road that runs along the border, a man suddenly appears. He leaps over the nearest fence with unexpected agility and vanishes into the South African bush. All this happens within a few hundred metres of the Beit Bridge border post, the only official crossing point between Zimbabwe and South Africa. Under the noses of the South African police and soldiers, this is as brazen as it gets.
I carry on watching with fascination. A few minutes later, a group of six men come surging over the security fence. They look left and right to see if there is any approaching traffic, cross the road and dart out of sight.

A little further along the border, I meet a workman in red overalls. Donald's job is to repair the holes cut in the fence by the Zimbabweans. "Sometimes, I have to fix 100 a day," he says. "The situation is getting worse and worse. Our army isn't patrolling enough."

_44010457_zim203border.jpg

Donald, a workman, says he repairs about 100 holes a day

"Perhaps what we need," suggests Donald, "is for Robert Mugabe to put up a fence on his side of the border."

Looking for work

I make my way back to the petrol station at Beit Bridge. This is the first stop for Zimbabwean motorists who have crossed the border legally and need to fill up their empty tanks. There is precious little fuel in Zimbabwe these days. But in the car park, it is not long before I run across some of those who have come across the border by less orthodox means. "Yes," says 23 year old Tony, "I swam the Limpopo. We have no food, no money and no jobs in Zimbabwe."

Promise is also 23. He is from Harare and has come to South Africa to look for a job in an attempt to support his family.
He thinks he might find some work on a local farm, but many have made the same journey ahead of him and a record number of Zimbabweans are now being picked up by the South African police and deported.

_44010467_zimpetrol203.jpg

Zimbabwean motorists who cross the border legally are short of petrol

Determined young men

It is thought that about 1,000 Zimbabweans are being arrested in South Africa every day and sent home, but as many as 3,000 a day may be coming into the country. So that means plenty appear to be slipping through the net. Some of the more circumspect Zimbabwean migrants enter South Africa under the cover of darkness. Most want to head south to the big cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria. All this is the consequence of what is happening in Robert Mugabe's Zimbabwe

As the early morning mist begins to burn off, a teenager approaches me and asks for a lift. Others are hitching on the main road, the N1 highway. The local farmers are getting more than a little jittery about this influx. They are hardly enamoured with large groups of poor, hungry and determined young men, traipsing across their land.

Game farmer Gideon Meiring sees himself living on a frontline.
He says the police can not cope, so with military precision, Gideon now runs his own patrols and tells me he comes across Zimbabweans on his property almost every day. All this is the consequence of what is happening in Robert Mugabe's Zimbabwe, a country that was once a jewel of Africa. And from all the Zimbabweans I meet at the border, there is just one simple refrain: "We are suffering."

When one of our chosen leaders makes almost half of the population refugees, and the entire country go hungry he should just do the wise thing.
