Becoming a SEAL is not easy: it notoriously has over a 90 percent dropout rate during training.

2. Israeli Special Forces


Given its tenuous relationships with its neighbors, it’s no surprise that Israel has quite a few special forces, all of them counted among the best in the world. Some are extremely secretive, such as the Duvdevam unit. These guys operate behind enemy lines and are often dressed in enemy clothing, pulling off attacks and assassinations. The guys from Egoz Reconnaissance are who you call when you really need to crack down on militants and terrorists.

When an airliner was hijacked and all the Jewish hostages kept in an airport in Uganda, Sayaret Matkal were the guys who flew over, snuck in and rescued them. But Shayetet 13 are considered the most elite: often compared to the Navy SEALs, one of their jobs were tracking down and killing all the terrorists involved in the 1972 Olympics massacre.

3. JW GROM


Though far less known that their counterparts, it is not hard to find a high opinion among other elite forces for Poland’s JW GROM. Established in 1990, GROM soldiers are arguably the most well-trained you can find. Unlike many special forces, which accept only people under a certain age, GROM only wants people in their thirties and older, preferring family men and other people of a responsible nature.

Training is rumored to last up to three years and each member of GROM is trained in at least two specialities. It is said that 75 percent are qualified paramedics. GROM is very active - it often works with the SEALs and have been fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq. It also regularly handles security in dangerous places.

4. Special Air Service


Nobody really knew much about the SAS until 1980, when terrorists took over the Iranian embassy in London. When a commando operation was finally greenlighted, it was the SAS who went in. Perhaps the most well-rounded elite force in the world, the SAS is trained in all manners of operations. They have had successes from fighting on the water, in it, on the ground, on mountains, in jungles and at the moment in deserts. In addition the SAS has a great record in dealing with hostage situations and terrorism.

They even had a stint fighting Columbian drug lords in that country. The SAS started as a saboteur group in World War 2 and, along with the equally elite Special Boat Service (SBS) are the tip of the spear for the British military. The SAS also has the credit of executing the first successful air-to-ship capture, made during the Falklands war.

5. GSG 9


When Black September terrorists grabbed and held hostages during the 1972 Munich Olympics, it turned into a fiasco that left all the terrorists and most hostages dead. The German police’s inept response was to blame, so plans were made to create a group that would deal with such situations. This became GSG 9 and, in true German style, they are the best at the job.

In over 1,500 missions these guys are said to have only fired weapons five times and they have a nearly perfect track record at recovering hostages alive. When terrorists hijacked a Lufthansa airliner in 1977 and took it to Somalia, it was GSG 9 that led the operation and got everyone back. GSG 9 gets called whenever a hostage situation or bomb threat is made against Germany - they are like SWAT, but with the same calibre as any of the other forces on this list.

6. Spetsnaz Alpha


The Spetsnaz is not an actual force, but instead a blanket term for any special forces in Russia. The world knows them best through photos showing burly soldiers doing crazy stuff - like being beaten by planks of wood. Some stories even suggest that having bones broken and ribs cracked during training is not only anticipated, but mandatory. How true that is is not clear - Russian special forces are very secretive.

The leading group is Alpha, the best building-stormers you can find. They were responsible for clearing out Chechen rebels that captured a Moscow theatre in 2002. The raid resulted in a lot of hostage deaths, but it turned out this was not due to a mistake made by Alpha. More sledgehammer than surgical, if you need anything cleared, Alpha does the job best.

7. National Security Guard


Most of the forces on this list are already known to some level. But have you ever heard of the NSG, India’s top anti-terror group?

You would be most familiar with their work: these were the guys who took care of business when terrorists attacked and held parts of Mumbai in 2008. Created in 1986 to take on militant groups in India’s religiously diverse landscape, the NSG have a knack for sorting out sieges by armed terrorists. Once they cleared a temple taken over by militants, arresting all 300 combatants without a single person being killed. Excellent with hostage situations, the NSG have cleared sieges in building, airliners and more.
