President Kikwete has raised Tanzania's standing in the global stage. He has made us proud as a nation, and sealed his legacy as one of the Africa's best diplomats ever. This became evident as he received a standing ovation in his outstanding tribute to the late Nelson Mandela. Dr. Kikwete showcased his eloquence, charm, oratory and diplomatic might in his eulogy to the former a pivotal figure in the struggle to end white minority rule in South Africa
Dr. Kikwete rose into political and diplomatic stardom from a very humble beginning with his political journey starting as an ordinary TANU party cadre and loyalist who served diligently in various positions before leaping into the global limelight as a diplomatic star. President endured in-party wrangles, and backstabbing, and gradually climbing the ranks of becoming Tanzania's fourth president and Africa's diplomatic Icon
When his diplomatic genius became obvious to his ruling party CCM, the party had no choice but give Dr. Jakaya Kikwete its blessings to carry the torch, trumping eleven of his party co-aspirants. His hard-work, humility and determination, loyalty to his party and country finally paid off; his dream to become Tanzania's chief diplomat became a reality in 2005, when Tanzania threw its overwhelming support by handing him staggering 80 percent of the votes
After his sweeping victory into the presidency, President Kikwete quickly assembled top minds; the likes of Dr. Philip Mpango were tapped to steer the country into the economic Promised Land.
No sooner did he assemble his economic dream team, than he jumpstarted his global diplomatic onslaught to attract foreign direct investments. For a greater part, he has outshined his peers across the continent with his diplomatic charm and savvies. President Kikwete is the only African sitting head of state with a record seven honorary degrees by universities across the planet
While his peers across the great lakes region are grappling with International Criminal Court (ICC), President Kikwete is basking in diplomatic glory; He has become a global household name and a superstar, mediating conflicts across the continent. The President is aggressively and tirelessly selling Tanzania and its investment opportunities to the rest of the world, no wonder Tanzania is now the second fastest growing economy in the continent
President Kikwete has placed Tanzania in the global map as unrivaled investment and tourist destination. His genius diplomatic maneuvers have attracted the world most powerful leaders, both seating and former presidents such as the US Barack Obama, and Chinese Xi Jinping.
President Kikwete has hosted Chinese Hu Jintao, Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter, George Bush and Tony Blair just to name a a few. He was the first African head of state to visit the White House when President Obama took over the oval office as the first United States Black President, and since then they have become close friends. He is also one of the few third world countries to have ever attended a G8 summit back in 2008 along with the late Meles Zenawi and John Kufuor of Ethiopia and Ghana respectively
Domestically he has proven time after time that is the master of the game, cooling temperatures when the country was boiling into explosion. During the recent constitutional review, in which the ruling party CCM hurriedly passed the constitutional bill, the president prudently quelled the opposition fury by inviting them to the state house for talks over a cup of juice before returning the bill to the parliament
While his diplomatic stocks have risen exponentially, his stardom and gains have not come cheaply. His achievements have earned him enemies and isolation amongst his frustrated neighbors whose fate and freedom hangs in the balance. In recent months, Rwandan president Paul Kagame, a good friend of the Kenya's ICC inductees, and a good ICC candidate himself publicly threatened President Kikwete physical safety for having suggested a diplomatic approach –dialogue- to the Democratic Republic of Congo's conflict
Notwithstanding, the President has suffered economic challenges, and that's not because he did not have the right policies, this is because some of his most trusted lieutenants were not so trustworthy as they pretended to be. They were economic wolves and hyenas that have displayed their carnivore's skills, sabotaging the great economic policies and vision the President and his dream team had for Tanzanians. The bureaucrats in the economic system have frustrated and held hostage presidents global diplomatic efforts for their own interests
As he nears the end of his term, he will go down history books as one of the Africa's best diplomats ever. A man of the people, who mingled with unwashed, consoled the widows and dined with kings and queens alike. President Jakaya Kikwete is in the line to join the ranks of Bill Clinton, and Kofi Annan in global peace mediation. Before he steps into global peace-mediation upon his retirement, Tanzania public must make good use of Dr. Kikwete's wisdom and experience.
The breed of impatience; The breed of greed, arrogance, imprudence, and attention seeking self proclaimed geniuses going around the country holler at their own recklessness ought to consult with the President. The corruption riddled selfish-minded young power maniacs –presidents' wannabe-to lower their guns and recalibrate their approach and ambitions. They must travel the same humble journey building their loyalty and unquestionable moral characters before flirting the country's highest office
