Uganda allocates shs42b for AFCON 2027 hotel upgrades

The Government has set aside sh42b to support private hotel investors in Gulu and Lira as part of preparations to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang has said.

The financing is intended to help hotel owners in the two northern Uganda cities to renovate, expand and improve their facilities to meet the expected demand for accommodation during the continental football tournament.

Ogwang said the funds will be accessed by private hotel operators through a government-supported financing arrangement managed in partnership with the Uganda Development Bank (UDB).

He said successful applicants will access the money at an interest rate of five per cent and will be able to borrow and repay at 5 per cent with a grace period of three years.

Minister Peter Ogwang’s announcement that CAF has cleared the under-construction Akii Bua Stadium in Lira as Uganda’s third official match venue for AFCON 2027, alongside Hoima City Stadium and Namboole Stadium.

Uganda is co-hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations with Kenya and Tanzania, with all three nations required to provide multiple compliant stadia, and recent government updates confirm progress toward completing Akii Bua, Hoima, and Namboole by December 2026.

Peter Ogwang also cinfirms President Museveni’s directive to the Ministry of Finance and Uganda Development Bank to release funds to hoteliers within two weeks to address delays.

Hotel owners in regions like Bunyoro, Gulu, and Lira raised concerns over slow disbursement of government-backed low-interest loans needed to upgrade facilities for the 2027 AFCON, which Uganda is co-hosting.

The financing supports private hotel expansions and renovations at favorable terms including 5% interest and a three-year grace period to boost accommodation capacity ahead of the tournament.
