President Yoweri Museveni has assured the Confederation of African Football (CAF) of Uganda’s commitment to completing preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Uganda will co-host with Kenya and Tanzania.
Museveni made the assurance on Tuesday at State House while meeting a CAF delegation led by Secretary General Samson Adamu and Country Infrastructure Manager Bianca Wambui. The CAF technical team is in Uganda assessing proposed stadiums, training grounds and other supporting facilities ahead of the tournament scheduled for June 2027.
According to Deputy Press Secretary Faruk Kirunda, the CAF officials briefed the President on their preliminary findings from the ongoing inspections. Wambui commended the progress made so far, particularly on stadiums and training grounds.
Museveni acknowledged that some logistical challenges remain but pledged government intervention to ensure Uganda meets CAF standards. He said the country’s experience hosting the 2024 Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit demonstrated its ability to handle major international events.
“The Kampala area has the facilities, but now the challenge is upcountry, which we are now going to concentrate on,” Museveni said, adding that he would support efforts to address the remaining requirements.
CAF proposes single visa
During the meeting, CAF Secretary General Samson Adamu asked Uganda to fast-track discussions on a joint single-visa arrangement between Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.
The proposal would ease cross-border movement for fans, national teams, media and tournament officials during the 2027 competition.
Museveni welcomed the proposal and said discussions with Kenyan President William Ruto and Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan were already underway.
The President also met the National AFCON Task Force, led by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, to review preparations involving various government ministries, departments and agencies.
The meeting was attended by Minister of State for Sports Peter Ogwang and FUFA President Moses Magogo.
The 2027 AFCON, dubbed the “Pamoja Bid,” will mark the first time the continent’s flagship football tournament is jointly hosted by three East African countries.
