Clement Agnes Ader of France in October 9, 1890 (Born 2 April 1841).

He reportedly made the first manned, powered, heavier-than-air flight of a significant distance (50 m) but insignificant altitude from level ground in his bat-winged, fully self-propelled fixed wing aircraft with a single tractor propeller, the Ader Éole . Seven years later, the Avion III (a different machine) was said to be flown upon 300 metres (in fact just lifted off the ground, and lost control). The event was not publicized until many years later, as it had been a military secret. The events were poorly documented, the aeroplane not suited to have been controlled; there was no further development. Later in life Ader claimed to have flown the Avion II in 1891 for over 200 meters.

Two Brothers German engineers named Otto and Gustav Lilienthal in 1896 (The final flight was 9 August 1896, During a flight Lilienthal's glider stalled and he fell from a height of 17m (56 ft), breaking his spine. He died in Berlin the following day.

Before the Wright Brothers achieved the first successful heavier-than-air controlled flight on December 17, 1903, hundreds of women and men attempted to fly, in airships, gliders and aeroplanes, and many did go aloft in gas and hot-air balloons.

Flying Vehicles in Ancient Egypt.

These images were found on the ceiling beams of a 3000-year old New Kingdom Temple, located several hundred miles south of Cairo and the Giza Plateau, at Abydos.

From this images we see many craft that resemble modern day flying machines.
