Tanzania has most trade barriers in EAC- report!!!

kwanza kabisa, IGAD is not a trading block. Its main purpose was avert drought and famine disasters. the mandate was further expanded to meet peace and security concerns and also faciltate political dialogue in hostile zones such as the Sudans. It was never a trading block. Its wrong to point out on Kenyan Media stations yet the entire EAC zone feels Tanzania isnt upto the task.journalists write what sells and they care less about ethics though theres nothing ethical in this issue but reality. Its better if Tanzania as an authority pulls out from certain clauses it feel oppressed than complain every now and then. We got issues this side of our border but they aint as rampant.

What a gem this one is. The difference is the existence of the EAC treaty. Last time I checked Somalia was not part of EAC and Burundi was. IGAD does not guarantee free movement of people! Do you guys read what you write?:biggrin:
Why not?

The objectives of IGAD are to:
  • Promote joint development strategies and gradually harmonize macro-economic policies and programmes in the social, technological and scientific fields;
  • Harmonize policies with regard to trade, customs, transport, communications, agriculture, and natural resources, and promote free movement of goods, services, and people within the region.
  • Create an enabling environment for foreign, cross-border and domestic trade and investment;
  • Achieve regional food security and encourage and assist efforts of Member States to collectively combat drought and other natural and man-made disatsters and their natural consequences;
  • Initiate and promote programmes and projects to achieve regional food security and sustainable development of natural resources and environment protection, and encourage and assist efforts of Member States to collectively combat drought and other natural and man-made disasters and their consequences;
  • Develop and improve a coordinated and complementary infrastructure, in the areas of transport, telecommunications and energy in the region;
  • Promote peace and stability in the region and create mechanisms within the region for the prevention, management and resolution of inter-State and intra-State conflicts through dialogue;
  • Mobilize resources for the implementation of emergency, short-term, medium-term and long-term programmes within the framework of regional cooperation;
  • Promote and realize the objectives of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and the African Economic Community;

what hypocrisy are you talking about? IGAD is more of a military oufit than a trading block. Any ceasefire is addressed through IGAD, read Eritrea and Sudan. No treaties have been signed to facilitate trade, its more of a vision as of now. Please revisit your current affairs lecture and understand the core function of some of this bodies.

Geza, i just wonder if you are smart at being reckless or are never aware of what is happening. KDF is currently in theater with Somalia, how do you expect we scrap crucial border operations such as check points? Trade between Kenya and Ethiopia at the moment is neglible via road so what you are implying is utter nonsense. I stick to saying IGAD at the moment is a military outfit with trade treaties remaining to be fulfilled in the near future awaiting devts such as LAPPSET.

understand what a mission is and an objective. Objective is what you hope to achieve in the near future and i can tell you with utmost certainity that IGAD hasnt succeeded at being a trading block. However, it acts as a control to achieve this including the wider comesa objectives. Are you answered? Mark you we have no issues with comesa regions or feed me if any. I only know of sugar importation which we borrowed permision not to do so with an aim of protecting the sugar producing belt zones from imminent collapse. Anyway we are discussing EAC, how does IGAD fit in?
Summing Up!!!
Kenya’s Economic Survey 2010 showed
Nairobi’s exports to Addis Ababa stood at $
43.1 million while Kenya imported goods
worth $2.4 million.

Bareucracy ni nzuri tu. ila tafsuda imetumika hata, kiutu zima, maana malipo bila risiti ni kitu kidogo, mlungula au kick back, Means jamaa weupe wa bongo ni njaa sana. it will take time to know the importance of credibility in business dealing... Mungu Atusaidie.

come on, dont be nice or you out of ideas? Kenya n Tz are already transancting, issue is why does the latter keep complaining?
Aside: If you have data about trade btwn Dar and Nairobi please post.

Tutajiunga baada ya kujipanga vizuri, not under pressure kwani kuna haraka gani?

Mkuu wala usishangae unang'ag'anizi wao na baadhi yao kuwa namajigambo yasiyo na tija, deep down wanajua they cannot do without TANZANIA; hapa wana-put up a brave face tu hawataki kuwa wakweli kwamba lengo lao hasa hasa ni aridhi YETU, na kutaka ku-flood soko letu na bidhaa zao ili wakudumaze viwanda vyetu - HATUDANGANYIKI.

but corruption is the highest trade barrier than weight bridges or id cards or traffic checkpoint or otherwise u r planning to destroy our roads by overweighing or export Mungiki robbers then tell us why are weight bridges and police checkups a hindrance to u! Do u think we forgot the wave of organized crime the Northern Tanzania city of Arusha and town of Moshi experienced from the "Mwangis" and the likes earlier 2000? Stupid report anyway....!

It would be wrong to think that only mwangis commit crime in Tanzani, however the governement there reserves the right to clean its society of "mungiki" menace.

@Kibona

Sikutarajia, maswala ya ardhi ijitokeze, na Serikali reserves the right to allocate land to whomever it feels safe to do so based on the land clauses of the constitution. Natumai nimekujibu!!

Non-tariff barriers impact on businesses in EAC - report

East African News Agency
Non-Tariff barriers (NTBs) continue hindering effective running of businesses in the East African Community (EAC), according to a report compiled following a recent ministerial assessment of the ports of Mombasa in Kenya and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Bureaucratic practices at the two ports, unnecessary roadblocks and other administrative issues, are among the main stumbling-blocks to progressive business in the region, the report says.
Many weighbridges in the northern and central corridors, the report adds, result in goods not reaching their destinations on time. Some of the affected destinations are Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda with 36 roadblocks between Mombasa and Kigali and 30 between Dar es Salaam and Rusumo border. Uganda has nine roadblocks between Malaba and Gatuna.

Rwanda and Burundi are doing better than the rest EAC member states in this regard.

The report also says lengthy procedures in issuance of work permits among EAC partner States, especially Tanzania, are a big challenge. Other problems highlighted include lack of car parks at border posts, corruption and prohibition of cargo trucks from travelling beyond 18:00 within Tanzania.
Rwandan Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Trade and Industry Emmanuel Hategeka told a press conference in Kigali recently that negotiations to ensure total elimination of barriers were ongoing.
"We are discussing with other EAC members states to reduce weighbridges, especially as regards transit cargo in the corridors," he said.
The northern and central corridors link the two ports to the hinterland. Tanzania has agreed to remove a US$200 levy imposed on Kenyan trucks and also scrapped visa charges on Kenyan traders entering the country.
Several regional truck drivers told EANA that roadblocks were an enormous challenge in the EAC.
"Roadblocks are detrimental to trade. There are many roadblocks in Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda," said a driver who declined to be named. "They are a headache and cause losses in form of bribes paid at each roadblock."
However, Rwanda Revenue Authority taxpayers service development director Drocella Mukashyaka told EANA that there were no roadblocks in the country.

The ministerial assessment team report says most of the hurdles could be prevented by weighing transit vehicles twice from the port of entry and port of exit for Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and Burundi as Tanzania awaits a study on the establishment of the weighbridges.

Mzalendo452,

Tayari tuna skeleton in our cupboard, East Africa Community ya miaka ya 1970 ilikufa kwa sababu hizi hizi ambazo zinatuzonga sasa. Na watanzania dakika hii wangeulizwa wanataka nini EAC, I am almost certain wengi watasema tugawane mbao (kama zipo) kila mtu aende zake. People hate EAC with a passion.

You need to do more than that. Ndio maana tunaandaa katiba mpya. Na harakati za kudai katiba mpya zimedumu kwa miaka aprox 20 sasa (tangu 1992), better late than never. Hivyo tunajua tatizo la msingi ni lipi na kama jamii we are now doing something about it.

Ninachotaka kusema hapa, kama nchi, Tanzania tuna matatizo yetu and we are addressing them in our own way.

But for nown, we are very busy sorting out our fundementals.

i told you that you are very reckless with data when it comes to Kenya. You have 58 weigh bridges between Dar and Rusumo and not 30.....way too many for 1200 km. Kenyas distance to kigali is 1470km and thats 36 WBGS. Link coming up

Livefire, una source yako inayosema there 58 roadblock, na Geza anayo source yake inayosema kuna 30 roadblocks!

FJM asanta lakini lets analyse this without digging into hate manouvres. the guardian journalist is based where? Certainly not in africa and not Tz. i dislike/hate ''his'' campaign in tainting Kenya as having an agenda which we dont. Otherwise the forum is great n thanks for moderating the air.
