You can see through a fast-spinning fan because of how your eyes and brain process motion, plus the fan blades don't actually block your whole view all the time.
1. The blades aren't everywhere at once
Even when a fan looks like a blur, the blades are still just 3-5 solid pieces. At any instant, they only cover about 5-15% of the circle. The rest is empty space. So 85-95% of the time, any given spot behind the fan has a clear line to your eye.
2. Persistence of vision + flicker fusion
Your eyes don’t take a single snapshot. They average what they see over ∼1/16 to 1/30 of a second.
If a fan spins at 1200 RPM, that’s 20 rotations per second. A 3-blade fan means a blade passes a given point 60 times per second.
At that speed, your retina blends the moments when the blade is not there with the brief moments it is. Since the “not there” moments dominate, your brain builds a semi-transparent image of what’s behind it. It’s the same reason a movie at 24fps looks like smooth motion instead of 24 still pictures.
3. You’re mostly seeing around the blades, not through them
Do this: hold your hand up and wave it back and forth fast in front of your face. You can still see the room behind it. The fan is just doing that automatically and way faster. Your brain fills in the gaps from the glimpses it gets between blades.
When you can’t see through it:
• If the fan is spinning slowly, you’ll see distinct blades and they’ll block stuff. Your eye can’t fuse the images yet. • If the blades are very wide or there are many of them, they cover more of the circle, so less background gets through. • If it’s dark behind the fan, those brief glimpses aren’t bright enough for your eye to register, so it looks more solid. • If the lighting flickers at the same rate as the blades pass — like under some LED or fluorescent lights — you can get a strobe effect where the blades look frozen. Then they block the same spots repeatedly.
This is basically the same physics as why wagon wheels in old movies look like they spin backwards, or why you can see through helicopter rotors.
