Eight Florentino Perez strategies to sign world football's biggest galacticos

Luis Figo (2000)

When Perez was still just a presidential candidate, one of the players he promised was none other than Barcelona winger Figo. Once elected, he delivered on that very promise.

After a lengthy 12 hour negotiation period, Perez had secured the signature from his club's biggest rivals.


Zidane (2001)

After seeing Zinedine Zidane at a UEFA gala in Monaco, the president acted quickly, getting the Frenchman's signature on a napkin to ensure he made the move from Juventus.

It was a back and forth between Real Madrid and Ronaldo, but eventually Perez got his way, although he had to take his yacht all the way to Formentera personally just to convince Inter president Massimo Moratti. It took an additional nine days for the Brazilian striker to join Los Blancos.

Beckham (2003)

This deal was achieved in stages. First at school, then at home, and eventually with Alex Ferguson famously throwing a boot at the Englishman. Barcelona were interested in Beckham too, but Perez said 'never, never, never' and months later, the Merengues had swooped in for Barcelona's most coveted signing.

Joaquín (2004)

It is no secret that Perez wanted Betis star Joaquin to wear the Real Madrid white, so much so that he tried to use Raul as a way to lure the striker into a private restroom so they could discuss a potential deal. The Verdiblanco trickster was a bit taken aback by the tactics and unconfortably declined, on that particular occasion and many others.

Benzema (2009)​

Hardly ever is it necessary, but Perez made his way to Karim Benzema's house to ensure he made the move. It was in his Lyon mansion that the two reached an agreement during the month of June back in 2009

Kun Agüero (2011)

​

Perez has never hidden his admiration for Kun Aguero. During a Madrid derby, the president tried to convince the Argentine striker to leave Atleti for Real Madrid right in the stadium's entrance halls themselves. During the episode, Perez brought down a Real shirt and joked about how good he would look in white, although Atletico would eventually block a potential deal.​

Just as had been done with Aguero, the Real president once again left his box to track down David Silva during a match against Manchester City. Perez asked for a picture of him for his two nephews, but Silva knew something was up and politely declined the offer to join Real Madrid.
