why don't they reclaim their land?

The truth is those who own the land make the rules, I know it's

Look TZ's investment policies doesn't discourage/discriminate potential investors because of their nationalities. If you really think are capable and serious about investing in agriculture you can go to the Tanzania Investment Center (TIC) and trust me you will get what you want....

The problem to Kenyans and other EAC citizens: you never stop thinking that now you have all the right to enter TZ and grab chunks of land as you wish.... One thing you should know is that it has never been an easy undertaking even to fellow Tanzanians who wish to grab large tracts of land without showing how serous they are going to develop it. With exception to some corrupt politicians cum businessmen...

Bangladeshi companies launch Africa farm lease plan


Another agreement to lease around 30,000 hectares for 99 years will be signed with the Tanzanian government later this week.
Officials say African countries have huge amounts of unused cultivable land.
At the same time they say that Bangladesh has the manpower and expertise to produce staple crops all year round.
'Food security' Under the plans, the Contract Farming System will enable Bangladeshi companies to get at least 60% of the produce.
In return Bangladesh will train African farmers in rain-fed rice cultivation, seed conservation and irrigation.
It is hoped that the new arrangement will increase food productivity and enable the country's expanding workforce to be deployed in Africa's farming sector.
"Basically this idea is mainly for proper management of our food security," said Wahidur Rahman, a senior Bangladeshi foreign ministry official.

If Kenyans want to invest in agriculture sector in our country, they are more than welcome to lease land. The problem with our neighbors to the North they want to have the same rights akin to Tanzanians citizens! They want Tanzanian Government to issue offers and title deeds to them, that will never happened!

Surprisingly, the same people who want to Tanzania to offer Land to them have turned around and amended their consitution and make it impossible for foreigners to own land in Kenya. This what the new Kenya's constitution stipulates, " The new constitution indicates under the existing land holdings and agreements relating to natural resources that on the effective date, any freehold interest in land in Kenya held by a person who is not a citizen shall revert to the Republic of Kenya to be held on behalf of the people of Kenya, and the State shall grant to the person a ninety-nine year lease at a peppercorn rent.

The constitution further states that any other interest in land in Kenya greater than a 99 year lease held by a person who is not a citizen shall be converted to a ninety-nine year lease."

This Saturday (21, May 2011, from 12.00 to 16.00) 150 young people will gather up in the UDBS Building (University of Dar es Salaam) to discuss land grabbing – an issue that affects everybody.

Land rights experts and politicians will participate along with the concerned young people and together they will discuss the problems Tanzania is facing due to land grabbing and what the solution to the issue could be. And that is the purpose of this public debate on land grabbing; to start talking about the problem that is everybody's problem.

In the end of this event a petition, saying that two land rights organizations should be represented in the Constitutional Review Commission, will be presented for the politicians to sign.

BACKGROUND:
Land grabbing in Tanzania is not something new. Huge tracts of land have been grabbed by both local and foreign investors under the pretext of investment. This is surrounded by many challenges and controversies - especially when investors are involved directly to negotiate with the local communities. Unclear contracts and broken promises leave the local communities with no change. This has made many Tanzanians to lose their lands, jobs and has also brought food insecurity.

The campaign Don't Sell Our Future is fighting against land grabbing in Tanzania. It has one simple request – that two land rights organizations are represented in the Constitutional Review Commission on which the politicians hopefully will sign a petition at this public debate

Behind the campaign are the ActionAid International 2011 Global Change Students in Tanzania and volunteers from the University of Dar es Salaam and other youth networks in Dar es Salaam. The campaign is a part of ActionAid's international campaign for a hunger free world.
