I think I’d be correct to think that most of us relish wallowing in nostalgia.
Apropos to JamiiForums, we like to talk about how things were back in the day [you pick the year...2006, 2007, 2008, etc].
We talk about how deep, passionate, and meaningful discussions were in those days as opposed to today’s.
I’ve thought long and hard about this and I think there’s truth to it.
Today’s JF is no longer a marketplace of ideas.
Rather, it’s an echo chamber full of deranged anti-Magufuli CHADEMA fanboys who are uber-intolerant of others’ points of views which are different from theirs. They are very puerile!
No wonder why these days JF lacks those types of discussions and many of the old-time discussants are not active anymore.
Bash Magufuli and praise any of the CHADEMA snollygosters, you are a genius the likes of which we’ve never seen before.
Say something nice about Magufuli, you are the worst person in the history of existence!
Hahahaaaa these people are comical.
Those with a burgeoning inferiority complex should stop here, there is a lot of what looks like unadulterated condescension and ubiquitous, gratuitous and conspicuous flossing below.
JF is still diverse, although it is suffering from "
the tragedy of the commons syndrome" due to the great unwashed gaining internet access recently.
You can't increase internet access, without simultaneously and reciprocally increasing levels of education, and expect the level of discussion to flourish.
This is not a JF issue by the way, this is a societal issue. Our standards are falling. From common decorum to rhetorical finesse.
Even the president himself is an example of this entropy like decline. We had presidents who were presidential, even when the nation was troubled by a plethora of ailments.
The trouble with Magufuli is, even when he is doing the right thing, he is doing the right thing in the wrong way!
A few days ago, he was lecturing the business community that the government is capable of buying all the cashewnuts and using soldiers and military lorries/ storage. Even if one were to give him the benefit of the doubt and throw the basic principles of free trade aside, citing national security and national interest, Magufuli actually said - in his buffoonlike dramatic way- that he would have the soldiers crack the nutshells using the mouth. Now to him this was probably dramatic, but someone taking him literally could run with that and write a headline "Tanzania contemplating using soldiers to crack cashewnuts shells by mouth".
The next thing you know, Tanzanian cashewnuts are falling in price at the world market.
Why such a cavalier hyperbole was necessary is beyond me.
I am of two minds regarding Jamiiforums. One is to dismiss it as a platform that, while it has its jewels in terms of quality people, it also has -I am sorry to say- more than its fair share of the great unwashed who could barely read with comprehension. I am often inclined to ignore these. But my combative nature sometimes gets the better of me. When I have time I point out their logical non sequitur, the deus ex machina, the circular logic, the a priori fallacy, the cognitive dissonance, the self defeating arguments, et cetera, et cetera.
I tell them about their lack of context and understanding of history.
My philosophical Jiu-Jitsu moves are becoming rather repetitive, because I do not find engaging minds to elevate the discussion to the next level I dare say, at the risk of sounding condescending.
I am often reduced to school teaching, to people who read like they have never been to school or educate themselves privately at a very basic, first principle level.
I mention they should study Hegelian dialectics, Einstein's Relativity, Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle, Wave Particle Duality, The Double Slit experiment, Godel's Incompleteness Theorems and many concepts that will help them understand nature better.
If I sound like I'm flossing, it is only because I am teaching good hygiene.
Alas, English is such a barrier. And most of these concepts are unavailable in the Swahili literature.
Then sometimes I totally ignore JF and read my books and Quora.
How can I elevate myself If all I do is deal with a bunch of country bumpkins who I can't refer to a Bertrand Russell book, because (most of them) can't read in English?
If you can follow me, this is obviously not intended to mean you. And before someone objects and say we should be just as proud of Swahili, I would say there is none prouder. I recognize Swahili is the better language, structurally, grammatically, logically and phonetically. Much better than English. But it lacks the volume of literature English has.
I hate to be condescending. But I hate to not recognize facts as facts more than I hate to sound condescending.
Sometimes my Buddhism readings (mostly from the past) ignite compassion in me. Even for fools.
I remember the concept of the difference between a Bodhisattva and a Buddha - from a purely secular/ instructional fable/ myth point of view, not religious.
The Buddhists have a hierarchy of merits -for lack of a better word- which ultimately ends in one becoming a Buddha and ending in Nirvana/ heaven, far removed from the cycle of life and death.
Now, when one reaches the merit level of being a Buddha and escaping from this world, one is presented with a choice. To become a Buddha and escape to Nirvana/ heaven with no direct contact with the great unwashed masses of people, or to remain with the great unwashed as a Bodhisattva, face all the dirt of life, but also help a lot of people attaining enlightenment.
I don't claim to have such merits, but I think I face a similar challenge many a time.
The question becomes, should I concentrate on my learning and personal growth (Buddha, far removed from the great unwashed of JF) or should I toil inside "the tragedy of the commons" that, with increased internet access nowadays, every country bumpkin, ignoble imbecile and nagging nincompoop is a sudden expert on every subject on every internet platform.
I find an alternating balance.
When not busy I could be found engaging all kinds of fucktards, including those who want to show me 1=2 by using division by zero like Zurri, something I disproved 28 years ago at Tambaza while reading Dr. Asimov in firm one. I was 13 at the time.
When I am busy with my work, reading, watching my documentaries or movies etc, I just switch the temptation to engage off.
How can I learn new things to engage elevated minds (like some found in this very JF, there are very fine people no doubt, a minority), if I am always dealing with some birdbrained wannabe "Defender of the Faith" from JF?
I am reminded of one Winston Churchill quote.
It goes.
"You will never reach your destination if you stop and throw stones at every dog that barks at you".
