POLITICIANS TURN TO TANZANIAN WITCHDOCTORS TO WIN ELECTIONS

Politicians from Migori County are trooping to Tanzania to seek the services of witchdoctors in a bid to win the August elections.

The aspirants for various seats are travelling to Tarime and Mwanza towns to seek intervention of the “seers” ahead of the polls.

A spot check by the Nation revealed that the politicians believe that the witchdoctors can make them beat their opponents in the contests.

“Business is very good whenever Kenyans approach elections. Their aspirants usually come for our services and they pay whatever we tell them,” said Mr Mohammed Yaya, a witchdoctor based in Tarime.

“They fulfil all the requirements and they make payments upfront,” he added.

Aides of various politicians said their bosses seems to trust the “actions” of the witchdoctors.

“We visited one in Mwanza recently and my boss paid Sh150,000 for the service. I was particularly against it but some of our campaign committee members encouraged him to seek the intervention of the witchdoctors,” said the aide who asked not to be named because it might expose his boss.

Migori to Mwanza is a four –hour drive while to Tarime is only 50 minutes away by a car.

The Nation further established that even politicians who are self-confesed Christians are also seeking the help of the witchdoctors. Mr Yaya said their charges are determined by the political post a client is seeking although the rates are negotiable.

Kisumu police recover Sh4 million during raid to witchdoctor's house

Police in Kisumu are pursuing six foreigners suspected to be part of a cartel that has been conning residents out of millions of shillings.

The suspected witchdoctors, who allegedly escaped with an estimated Sh1 million, are believed to have come from Tanzania.

The suspects who operate in a posh three-bedroomed house in Tom Mboya Estate, jumped out of the compound after being ambushed by Flying Squad and Quick Response Team officers at about 4pm on Wednesday.

During the operation, police recovered Sh4 million out of Sh5 million, which a man identified as Robert Otieno Matete, had taken to the witchdoctors to be “multiplied”.

Matete is said to have sold a house and wanted the money to be ‘multiplied', prompting him to avail the cash to the suspects.

He was directed to buy a fridge where his cash would be placed as the witchdoctors continue with their spiritual prayers, only to realise that he had been duped.

“He was required to open the fridge after a week which an insider said would only be stuffed with fake currency,” police said.

Matete declined to speak to the press, and only kept saying: “ I don’t want the media, I am embarrassed and depressed.”

But he has recorded statement at the CID offices.

The suspects' home was ambushed following a tip off from members of the public, who said that several residents have fallen victims of the rampant conning.

Some of the documents found in the house bore writings such as "Ndumba Wa Ndumba, Tiba Za Jadi, Tunatibu Mungu Anaponya”.

The house is decorated with expensive carpets of various colours.


Inside the room of the main witchdoctor there are paraphernalia such as eggs, guards, pots, calabash, small made traditional thatched hut, beads and cowrie shells.

The room has a pipe connected to the adjacent room where clients sit, awaiting for a divine message from gods.

As the clients, the witchdoctor starts to speak in “tongues”, with clients thinking that its gods speaking to them, yet it is someone in the adjacent room.

Several pictures of people, including men, women and children were also found inside a pot covered with a red cloth.

Police said the victim had earlier been conned more than Sh1.2million by Ndumba Wa Ndumba who is alleged to have eloped to unknown destination.

“The man is reported to have been visiting the witchdoctors’ house, usually populated by innocent citizens who are desperate for help.”

Assistant Inspector General of Police Joseph Keitany said they are trailing the suspects who had escaped.

He said the witchdoctors, with seductive adverts and posters all over, mostly target innocent residents who are unaware of their fake deals.

“We are investigating the matter and those culprits conning residents must be apprehended,” Keitany said.

The alleged witchdoctor Musa Athman’s brother Hussein Isaack, said police stormed the compound at about 3pm as his brother was attending to clients.

Hussein said he was not aware that the man had brought Sh5 million in the house.

“I came to visit my brother who has been working in Kisumu for a long period and I have only been in Kisumu for a week now,” he said.
