Bielsa purposely ceded both possession and territory and then implemented this mid-low block w/man-orientated defence in order to contain us. The players stuck to the plan, Phillips stood out, and we struggled as a result.

Why is it important to recognise the EZ and not just the general pitch control? It's because controlling the pitch generally is not as important as controlling specific areas of the pitch. This is what Bielsa recognised and he used that principle against us really well.

In the 6-2 victory, Bielsa utilised the high press often and it created an EZ that was high and closer to our goal. So, our overall pitch control was just 46%. However, within the EZ it was 67%. This is important because the objective behind pressing high is so that a team can squeeze the opposition. When Leeds did it, though, we negotiated the EZ well with Fernandes as the catalyst.
