RATINGS REPORT
De Gea
Not at fault for either Wolfsburg goal. Made
some truly remarkable saves to keep United
in the game, including a few world class
stops with his side trailing late on.
1.
C. Smalling
He was a real nuisance in the opposition's
area and was nearly rewarded with an
equaliser late on. Defensively he made
some important interventions, but
inconsistency plagued him.
12.
M. Darmian
Offered some decent width on the overlap,
but was a liability in defence up against
Draxler. Forced off injured late in the first
half.
36.
G. Varela
Struggled to provide much of an impact
going forward, though he did well to limit
Wolfsburg's space out wide.
30.
B. Schweins...
Caught out on the break time and time
again and allowed Draxler past far too
easily in the buildup to the second
Wolfsburg goal. Offered next to nothing on
the ball.
31.
M. Fellaini
Poor in possession in midfield, not asking
enough of the Wolfsburg defence with his
passing. Was a constant threat in the air,
however. Denied a goal in the first half by
Benaglio, but his decisive touch led to
Guilavogui's own goal late on.
27.
Mata
A delightful ball sprung Martial through in
the buildup to the opener. Needlessly tried
to get a touch on Lingard's strike at the end
of the first half which saw United's equaliser
disallowed. Responsible in possession
throughout, but creativity was lacking.
8.
D. Blind
A rare bright spot at the back for United,
reading the game well and making some
crucial interceptions. Rarely let the hosts in
behind, while he also impressed in
possession.
17.
J. Lingard
Had a goal called back at the stroke of half
time as Mata interfered with play from an
offside position. Otherwise he spent much
of the match on the fringes.
35.
A. Martial
His movement caused the Wolfsburg
defence problems early on and he opened
the scoring inside 10 minutes with a terrific
finish. Faded drastically in the second half,
however, struggling to see much of the ball
under the watch of Naldo and Dante.
9.
M. Depay
Grew into the game in the second half, but
his end product was often lacking. Needed
to be more decisive in possession.
7.
C. Borthwick...
Replaced Darmian for just his second
United appearance. Capable in defence but
lacked quality going forward.
43.
M. Carrick
Sound in possession but wasn't able to be
a difference maker off the bench.
16.
N. Powell
Completely misjudged Schafer's cross,
failing to clear the danger which allowed
Naldo to head home the winner.
