When Elizabeth was born, the [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Empire"]British Empire[/ame] was a pre-eminent world power, but its influence declined, particularly after [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II"]World War II[/ame], and the empire evolved into the modern [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commonwealth_of_Nations"]Commonwealth of Nations[/ame]. Her father, [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_VI_of_the_United_Kingdom"]George VI[/ame], was the last [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emperor_of_India"]Emperor of India[/ame]. On his death in 1952, Elizabeth became Head of the Commonwealth, and queen of seven independent Commonwealth countries: the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_of_South_Africa"]South Africa[/ame], [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominion_of_Pakistan"]Pakistan[/ame], and [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominion_of_Ceylon"]Ceylon[/ame], later renamed [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sri_Lanka"]Sri Lanka[/ame].
