Kumbukumbu za ulimwengu (World Archives)

Bonde la Salinas, California. 1933.
Baba akasema: "Sisi ndio tangazo lenyewe." Mkaguzi akaondoka. Mnamo 1937, mradi wa WPA ulimwajiri Baba. Walihifadhi $200. Wakasafisha na kununua tena ekari 10. Walihama. Wakachoma yale mapazia.

Nun Cho Ga: The Remarkably Preserved Baby Mammoth

In June 2022, gold miners working at Eureka Creek in the Klondike region of Canada’s Yukon made an extraordinary discovery. While excavating through frozen permafrost, they uncovered the nearly complete, mummified body of a baby woolly mammoth. The animal still had much of its skin and hair preserved, offering scientists an exceptionally detailed look at an Ice Age mammoth.

The calf was named Nun Cho Ga by Elders of the Trʼondëk Hwëchʼin First Nation. The name means “big animal baby” in the Hän language. A preliminary examination indicated that the mammoth was female and probably only about 30–35 days old when she died. Scientists believe she was buried and frozen in permafrost more than 30,000 years ago. Later research and government documents have placed her age at more than 35,000 years.

Nun Cho Ga is especially important because she is considered the most complete and best-preserved mummified woolly mammoth ever discovered in North America. The previous major North American discovery was a partial mammoth calf known as Effie, found in Alaska in 1948.

Scientists believe Nun Cho Ga lived in the Ice Age environment of Beringia, alongside animals such as ancient horses, steppe bison and cave lions. Her exceptional preservation was made possible by the region’s permafrost, which can protect ancient tissues such as skin, hair and muscle for thousands of years.

The discovery was made possible through cooperation between the miners, the Trʼondëk Hwëchʼin First Nation and Yukon government scientists. It remains one of the most remarkable Ice Age discoveries ever made in North America.

The corpses in Pompeii were not frozen corpses. They had actually decomposed to the point where only the skeletons remained, but because they were filled with hardened volcanic lava, after decomposition they left holes. Later, scientists poured plaster into those holes to create the results we see today.

The WWII T-34 Found Beneath the Don River
For decades, a 30-ton Soviet T-34 tank remained hidden deep beneath the waters of Russia’s Don River, forgotten for generations until divers discovered the remarkable wreck earlier this year.
The tank was found approximately 23 feet (7 meters) below the river’s surface. Its discovery offered a rare glimpse into the chaos of World War II and raised questions about how the armored vehicle ended up on the riverbed.
Experts believe the T-34 may have been lost while attempting to cross the river using a temporary wartime bridge or crossing. During the brutal fighting of the Eastern Front, rivers were major obstacles, and armies frequently relied on pontoon bridges, transport vehicles, and temporary crossings to move troops and heavy equipment.
Recovering the massive tank was no simple task. An armored recovery vehicle was brought in to pull the battered T-34 from its decades-long underwater resting place.
Before the recovery, specialists also carefully considered whether the tank could still contain the remains of soldiers who may have been inside when it was lost. This concern contributed to the decision to delay the operation until investigators could determine that the vehicle could be safely recovered.
The surrounding riverbed provided additional clues. Divers reportedly encountered remnants of pontoons, transport equipment, and small vessels nearby, suggesting that the location may have been connected to a wartime crossing or logistical operation.
The T-34 was one of the most important Soviet tanks of World War II, becoming famous for its combination of armor, mobility, and firepower. Thousands were produced during the conflict, and the type played a crucial role in the Red Army’s battles against Nazi Germany.
Today, the recovered tank is more than a piece of military hardware. It is an underwater time capsule, preserving evidence of a dangerous chapter in history and reminding us that the rivers and landscapes of the Eastern Front still conceal countless wartime stories.
