After being lost without a trace since World War II, the United States Navy submarine USS Grunion (SS-216) was finally found in 2006 in remote waters near the Aleutian Islands. This discovery ended a 64-year mystery surrounding the fate of the ship and its 70 crew members.
The USS Grunion last communicated in July 1942 after its first combat patrol in the North Pacific. The ship reportedly sank several Japanese targets before disappearing en route to its base in Dutch Harbor, Alaska. Since then, its whereabouts have been a mystery in military history.
The search for the wreck was initiated by the crew's family, including the son of the ship's commander, who conducted archival research and analysis of Japanese battle reports. Using deep-sea sonar technology, the wreck was finally identified at a depth of approximately 820 meters.
Underwater images showed the ship's hull relatively intact but with heavy damage to the forward section. The mystery was further unraveled in 2019 when a follow-up expedition team discovered the bow section separated from the main hull. Visual analysis revealed significant deformation in the forward torpedo tube, raising the suspicion that an internal explosion—possibly caused by a torpedo that failed to eject or reverted—was the cause of the ship's sinking.
The discovery of this bow section provides technical clarity to decades of speculation. However, the U.S. Navy insists the site is a protected war grave, and there are no plans to salvage the wreck.
The discovery of the USS Grunion was not only a technological achievement in deep-sea exploration but also an emotional moment for the families of the fallen crew. After decades of uncertainty, they finally learned the final resting place of these sailors.
In the frigid waters of Alaska, the USS Grunion now rests in silence—a silent witness to a battle on the North Pacific front often overlooked in the grand narrative of World War II.
