Businessman Africano Nteziyaremye and his wife have reportedly been shot dead by unidentified assailants at the gate of their home in Kisoro.
The couple were returning home in a Toyota pickup when they were attacked a few minutes before midnight on Saturday.
Police had yet to issue an official statement.
Reacting to the development, researcher Bernard Sabiti described the couple as longstanding members of Kisoro’s business community who had built their enterprise over decades.“Oh Lord what a terrible tragedy! This couple were a fixture of our little town for decades, serving our community by running a simple retail business that they grew into a strong business empire,” Sabiti said.
He also expressed concern about personal safety in Kisoro, recalling that someone had recently warned him against sleeping at his village home because of the risk of robbery. The motive for the reported attack remains unclear.
The report comes against the backdrop of an announcement by Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba of an operation targeting criminals across Uganda.
“We have launched ‘Operation Kisasi’ against criminals in the country. It will not end until we finish them,” Muhoozi wrote on X on Saturday.
