Police in Kisoro District are investigating the shooting deaths of a businessman, Africano Nteziyaremye, and his wife, Peace Kyompeire, who were killed on Saturday night as they returned home from their wholesale shop in Kisoro Town.

Kigezi Region Police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime said the incident occurred at about 11pm on October 17 in Zindiro Cell, Kamonyi Ward, Kisoro Municipality.

According to police, the couple were allegedly attacked and shot dead by unidentified assailants believed to have been armed with a firearm. Their motive remains unknown.

Detectives and a canine unit visited the scene to collect evidence. By Sunday, no arrests had been made, although efforts to identify and apprehend the suspects were ongoing.

The bodies were taken to Kisoro Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations.

Businessman remembered for generosity
Kamonyi Ward councillor Augustine Mbonigaba described Nteziyaremye as a hardworking and generous businessman who supported community activities, needy residents and emerging traders.

He said the businessman regularly contributed money and materials to public ceremonies in Kisoro Municipality and provided food to people in need.

Mbonigaba added that Nteziyaremye was respected by fellow traders, politicians and residents of Kisoro Town.

Security intensified in Kisoro
Kisoro Deputy Resident District Commissioner Dan Ndikumwami said police and Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) personnel had been deployed in the area to pursue the attackers and prevent similar crimes.

Ndikumwami called for stronger security in the border district, which neighbours Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. He also urged authorities to provide patrol vehicles to improve security personnel's response to crime.

He proposed that each of Kisoro District's five constituencies should have at least one police patrol vehicle.

The deputy RDC further urged local leaders to register foreigners renting residential rooms and record their business details, saying this could help security agencies identify individuals involved in criminal activities.

Police have appealed to anyone with information about the killings to report it to the authorities or local leaders to assist investigations.
