According to police, the incident occurred at about 7:30 p.m. on October 23, 2026, as the student travelled home on a boda-boda.
The assailants, reportedly about four men armed with pangas, allegedly grabbed the student’s bag containing two mobile phones.
The student raised an alarm, attracting police officers who were on patrol in the area. The suspects fled into a nearby swamp as officers responded.
Police pursued them, during which one suspect allegedly attempted to attack an officer with a panga. The officer shot the suspect, who later died while being taken for medical treatment.
Police said they recovered a panga, a knife and the student’s bag containing her two mobile phones from the deceased.
The suspect’s identity had not been established by the time of the police statement. His body was taken to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Police said patrols and surveillance had been intensified in crime-prone areas within the Kampala Metropolitan Policing Area and other parts of the country as operations against criminal activity continued.
