Tii, reached for his wife, Loo, under the flickering kerosene lamp. For three months, she had refused him, always silent, always distant.

"Come to me, my love," he whispered.

Lo, finally turned, her eyes wide and coated with an unsettling, oily sheen. "If you touch me, Juma, you will know why I keep the silence."

Ignoring the warning, he grabbed her wrist. A profound, paralyzing cold instantly shot up his arm. He looked into her eyes, and the world fractured. Instead of Loo, he saw an infinite, black void. Within that void, hundreds of ancient, starved faces were packed together, their mouths silently screaming. They were clinging to her, trapped within her.

He let go, dropping the lamp in terror, plunging the hut into darkness.

As Tii, scrambled for the door, Loo's dry, rustling voice now doubled by a low, hungry chorus came from the blackness right behind him.

"I am not afraid of your love, Tii," she whispered. "I am afraid of what they will eat."

He fled, leaving the Daughter of the Past and her silent, starving residents to the night.
