[FONT=ArialMT, sans-serif]Kahama lawmaker James Lembeli yesterday has said that Tanzania needs a new constitution which will meet the current people's needs.[/FONT]
[FONT=ArialMT, sans-serif]Apart from constitutional needs, the outspoken MP asked the government and other relevant authorities to ensure that the suspects linked to grand corruption scandals be taken to court, irrespective of their status.[/FONT]
[FONT=ArialMT, sans-serif]He made the remarks here when talking to journalists from different media outlets.[/FONT]
[FONT=ArialMT, sans-serif]The parliamentarian expressed his fear, saying corrupt people, if they were not swiftly delt with by being taken to court, would mar the drafting of the country's constitution because of their influence in the government and the ruling party.[/FONT]
[FONT=ArialMT, sans-serif]In his view, the current constitution had a number of shortfalls, hence the need to be drafted afresh to suit the current people's demands. [/FONT]
[FONT=ArialMT, sans-serif]He said Tanzania was no longer a socialist country as it was before, hence there was an urgent need to draft a new constitution to reflect the current situation.[/FONT]
[FONT=ArialMT, sans-serif]Lembeli urged the government to open its eyes and listen to people's outcry, saying a constitution was for the people and not animals.[/FONT]
"[FONT=ArialMT, sans-serif]There is no need to be blind on this. It is high time Tanzania came up with a new constitution which will suit the interests of many people," he said, adding: [/FONT]
"[FONT=ArialMT, sans-serif]By remaining silent on this it means that the government is trying to instigate unnecessary chaos."[/FONT]
[FONT=ArialMT, sans-serif]He said top government leaders were there for public interest, hence they should be working in the people's interests and not in their own interests.[/FONT]
"[FONT=ArialMT, sans-serif]The issue of a new constitution needs no debate; the people have waited for too long for it. So, this time around is the chance to act and change the current constitution which gives room to corrupt people."[/FONT]
