"Saints FC are delighted to announce the signing of
Victor Wanyama from Celtic FC on a four-year deal," the Premier League club said on their website.
"There were other options, but
Southampton is a club with ambitions so I chose to came here," the player said.
"I'm very grateful to be here and I'm looking forward to playing in the Premier League."
The fee was not officially disclosed, but reports put it in the £12.5m region, making it a Scottish transfer record.
The previous biggest sale from Scotland was that of Irish winger
Aiden McGeady, who joined Spartak Moscow for around £9.5m in 2010. The largest purchase was that of Tore Andre Flo from Chelsea, with Rangers paying £12m for the Norway striker in 2000.
Wanyama had been linked with Saints for several weeks. The 22-year-old box-to-box midfielder joined Celtic in 2011, scoring 13 goals in 91 matches.
His burgeoning reputation was heightened after several good performances in their run to the knockout stages of the Champions League, particularly in the 2-1 win over Barcelona at Celtic Park.
