FastJet Is In Talks to Add 10 Airbus A319s by End of 2015

FastJet Plc (FJET) said it’s in talks about adding more Airbus Group NV (AIR) short-haul jets to the fleet as the discount carrier seeks to open bases in Zambia, Zimbabwe and Kenya next year while expanding operations in Tanzania.

FastJet, which currently operates three Airbus A319s, is negotiating with a number of leasing companies about aircraft availability in the next three to six months, with expansion plans calling for as many as 13 of the type by the end of 2015, Chief Executive Officer Ed Winter said today in an interview.

“People were skeptical about us putting A319s into Africa but they’ve worked well with good reliability and punctuality,” he said. “We’re getting close to saying these planes are full and I hope we’re about to see an opportunity to really expand.”

FastJet’s strategy through the end of next year calls for seven A319s to be based in Tanzania, where operations began in 2012.
The London-based carrier also envisages stationing three planes in Zambia, together with two in Zimbabwe, where Robert Mugabe’s government has proved receptive to approaches, Winter said, while a sole aircraft could be located in Kenya.

FastJet shares traded 6.8 percent lower at 1.38 pence as of 11 a.m. in London after it posted an underlying first-half loss of $30.5 million, before interest and tax.
The expansion needs funds beyond 15 million pounds ($24 million) raised in April, and Winter said talks are ongoing with African backers and that he’d also be receptive to a deal with an airline investor.

China Plane Deal

Discussions are under way about a more immediate plan to source two A319s from the leasing unit of Industrial & Commercial (1398) Bank of China Ltd., Winter said. The aircraft would replace planes due to be returned to Volito Aviation Services of Sweden, in which Goldman Sachs Inc. (GS)has a minority stake.

FastJet still aims to secure an air operating certificate for Zambia by the end of this year and could add international routes quickly there, Winter said. Talks in Kenya, which the airline once earmarked for its initial base, have been more drawn out, and local rules will require a year of domestic-only flying before foreign services can be added, he said.

The carrier’s plans to establish the first pan-African discount network will continue to focus on East Africa for the foreseeable future, the CEO said, with the possibility of bases in Angola and Ghana, where it already holds AOCs, receding.

Bases could open in South Africa and Uganda in 2016, while by 2018 Winter sees a fleet of up to 34 jets, nine in South Africa, seven in Tanzania and Kenya, four in Uganda and Zimbabwe and three in Zambia. FastJet’s first international route, Dar es Salaam-Johannesburg, began last October, and it has since added services from the Tanzania city to Lusaka, Harare and Entebbe.

Winter said talks have resumed on implementing a code-share deal with Dubai-based Emirates, the No. 1 international airline, for which Dar es Salaam is an expanding destination. Middle Eastern carriers are candidates to invest in FastJet, where EasyJet Plc (EZJ) founder Stelios Haji-Ioannouholds a 10 percent stake but has been critical of recent pay awards to executives.

The first-half loss included $13.9 million from Tanzania and $13.5 from the Angola and Ghana operations, now suspended. Tanzanian sales almost doubled to $19 million, with both the customer total and revenue per passenger up about 40 percent.

, lawmaina78, hbuyosh tell me what it means by African backers and where are they if Fastjet so far is only operating in Tanzania? Make use of your common sense! Apart from those two i mentioned Tanzanian politicians and businessmen are shareholders!

BTW fastjet is not just looking for landing rights, they want to start operations in Nairobi, thats why I say again, they will have to hold their horses for a while
According to their plan operation are to start in Kenya next year! Right now they are looking to fly Dar-Nai . What pisses me off is KCAA refusal to grant them permit to fly from Dar to Nairobi! I don't wanna use KQ or PW or any Kenyan affiliated airline! i want more options and i find ur protectionism is stupid cause TCAA is planning a retaliatory moves of which u will regret!

noted ur question i will answer you when KQ's financial results come out u made a loss of US$ 69 million believe me you will make more loss with the entrance of Fastjet in the market! I will definitely help u to laugh...
The factors that led to KQ loss were bigger than that and I highlighted them here b4.

Tanzania market is too small to impact KQ profit that much.
KQ flies 80 destinations worldwide for christs!

They are planning more destinations in Asia, (esp China) Sasa subtract Dar. Hata hamna mbesha sana huko!

yap while PW is asking out KQ, Fastjet is seeking to enter Kenyan market while the likes of Fly Dubai, Emirates, Etihad are expanding not only in EA but across Africa! The only airline that can compete with these middle Eastern airlines is ET since they are massively expanding that 20+ order is for a budget airline and already they r having subsidiaries in West Africa Asky, Central Africa Air Malawi and soon to open another subsidiary in DRC Congo before launching a budget airline! i doubt SAA but KQ has no chance i assure u and Tanzanian market will be a factor to ur demise since PW and KQ both source revenue for local and International flights from Tanzania market no other place in Africa you get more revenue than Tanzania! If you have any other bigger revenue source for KQ pls let us know right here!

Greedy is what will make KQ collapse as they had a chance to groom PW to international level but they ignored them trying to consolidate dominance within the region now Fastjet has entered and PW is collapsing and want out with KQ as another UAE financial is willing to partner with PW who knows? May be Etihad or Fly Dubai? KQ demise will be next! :llama:

I like when you run your mouth ignorantly, then I get to show your ignorance. The biggest revenue source for kq in terms of routes is NBO-EBB, then NBO-BOM, then NBO-JNB then NBO-DAR. You are no. 4

British owned 100%! Happy? and every Tanzanian loves the airline, so let the planes land in Nairobi to know who will fly with KQ!

It doesn't make me happy, it just proves you're a liar. Your arguments are all based on lies, bitterness and frustration.

This doesn't say anything about Tanzania owning 51% of Fast jet.

if you understood me i did not talk of a route i talked of tanzanian market factoring in 41.15% KQ shares in PW so take the revenues of that number 4 position on Dar-Nai+KIA-Nai + Zanz-Nai to know how much KQ makes in TZ and sadly enough that is about to be snatched away by Fastjet, Fly Dubai and Dubai investor that will push KQ out of PW! Learn to understand issues

JKIA alone handles more pi passengers than the whole of Tz combined, Tz market is so negligible for KQ. Please, channel this energy to Air Tanzania buddy - KQ has been competing all these airlines you're mentioning for ages effectively under the management of Kenyans. What makes you think it won't manage this time? Kenya is not Tanzania.

calm down dude its called competition and calling me names will not change the fact that KQ dominance is in tatters and the true winners are Tanzanian passengers and tourist on the battle of the sky regardless of who own Fastjet! I have already made you happy by telling you British own 100% in Fastjet!

Wata-do what?
Kenyan airlines transports mostly the wazungus, Kenyans, Asians. wealthy Tz businesspipo and passengers from the other African countries to Tanzania. Not all passengers are Tanzanians.

Fastjet's success in the region will depend on Kenya cos after all, Kenya by far is the largest market. Dont u know that JKIA alone handled about 6million passengers annually compared with Dar's under 2million?
Mombasa airport handles almost the same number as Dar!

Sasa go ahead, close ur goddamn airports to us.
We dominate the market.

It was actually 6.5 million and that's after we suffered the fire tragedy. It could have been well over 7.5 million.
