Tanzania has called for stronger United Nations and international cooperation to address global challenges, including conflicts, climate change, insecurity, and development challenges. The country also underscored the importance of restoring confidence in the United Nations and strengthening global solidarity.
The call was made by the Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Deogratius John Ndejembi, who delivered a statement on behalf of Her Excellency President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan during the General Debate of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81) in New York on September 22, 2026.
Speaking on development, Hon. Ndejembi said Tanzania continues to implement the Tanzania Development Vision 2050 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by investing in its people, infrastructure, technology, and innovation. He also called for reforms to the international financial system to enable developing countries to access affordable financing to support development and address the impacts of climate change.
In the health sector, Hon. Ndejembi said Tanzania has increased the proportion of births taking place in health facilities from 51 percent in 2015 to 81 percent in 2022. He noted that Tanzania continues to advance the Three Zeros Agenda, which seeks to eliminate preventable maternal and child deaths, home deliveries, and the number of children who remain unvaccinated.
On peace and security, Tanzania reaffirmed the importance of upholding the Charter of the United Nations, international law, and the peaceful resolution of conflicts. Hon. Ndejembi also announced Tanzania’s intention to seek a nonpermanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2029–2030 term. Tanzania continues to support a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict.
Meanwhile, the President of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, H.E. Khalilur Rahman, emphasized the importance of restoring confidence in the United Nations through practical action, reform, and broader inclusion. He stressed that the organization should strengthen adherence to international law, the protection of civilians, and humanitarian assistance, while also enhancing Africa’s representation in decision-making bodies.
