FASTJET SIGNS DEAL WITH EMIRATES
(Posted 08th October 2015)

In breaking news can it now be revealed that Fastjet and Emirates have signed an extensive cooperation deal, which while not exactly an interline agreement still provides for the mighty Gulf giant to sell Fastjet's tickets on routes beyond Emirates' destinations in Eastern and Southern Africa to where Fastjet also flies.

Included in the deal is the uplift of baggage though the specifications for that contractual element, if it will include the internationally used 2×23 KG's for economy class ticket holders, 2×32 KG's for business class ticket holders and 2×40 KG's for first class ticket holders, is still to be confirmed.

Passengers booking their travel with Emirates to for instance Dar es Salaam can from today onwards fly with Fastjet to Kilimanjaro, Mwanza or Mbeya on the domestic network, making this arrangement mutually beneficial for both carriers. In Zimbabwe, when flights are launched on the 28th of October will Victoria Falls be within reach for travelers booked on Emirates, as Fastjet then connects the capital Harare three times a week with the arguably most famous destination, the might waterfalls of the Zambezi River, shared between Zambia and Zimbabwe.

It is understood that the deal will extend to Zambia too when Fastjet commences operations out of Lusaka, expected to happen in December this year.

This milestone agreement validates Fastjet's efforts over the past two years to position itself as a safe and reliable airline meeting the standards Emirates no doubt applies before selecting partners for such close up cooperation.

FASTJET FINALLY GETS A KENYAN AIR SERVICE LICENCE
(Posted 12th October 2015)

Fastjet PLC earlier today confirmed that the company, after a cat and mouse game played by the Kenyan Civil Aviation Authority, was finally granted an Air Service License.

This will now set the ball rolling for a countdown towards flight readiness, as a source close to the airline confirmed to this correspondent a few hours ago.

'Now that Fastjet has an ASL they can start their work to set up the airline in Kenya. That means open offices, recruit staff and start the process to get their AOC. They will have to bring in at least one aircraft or maybe two for the startup and register it in Kenya. KCAA will conduct an audit on their operating manuals, procedures, maintenance arrangements, accountable managers etc etc and normally that can take at least three months or more'.

Ed Winter, CEO of Fastjet PLC, was prompt to welcome the decision by the Kenyan Civil Aviation Authority which had kept the application pending for an entirely unreasonable period of time: 'The granting of the Kenya ASL is a major step forward in fastjet's plans to become a truly pan-African low-cost airline. Following recently announced progress towards the Zambia AOC and the receipt of our AOC in Zimbabwe last week, today's announcement signals a very substantial acceleration in the development of the fastjet network and our future growth plans. We are very pleased that the KCAA has recognised the important part that fastjet can play in developing Kenyan aviation, and look forward to working with them towards fastjet Kenya's first flights'.

It could not be ascertained though when Fastjet (Tanzania) will be granted their landing rights for flights from Dar es Salaam to Nairobi, another application which the KCAA has deferred time and again under the pretext of seeking additional information, something industry insiders called 'Absolute rubbish' when asked to comment on the why and when of this long pending application.

It is understood that the matter may have been raised during the farewell visit of outgoing Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete as the granting of landing rights was part of a greater deal which was struck earlier in the year between the two countries on several controversial issues affecting the tourism industry.

The arrival of Fastjet on the Kenyan aviation scene will no doubt send shivers down the spines of other, real or imagined low cost carriers in Kenya and have their strategists scramble to work out ways and means to stand the upcoming competition. Fastjet will very likely offer services from Nairobi to Mombasa, in direct competition with former partner Fly540 and FlySax but also with Jambojet, Kenya Airways' low cost subsidiary.

Flights into the region, once a designation has been obtained from KCAA, will very likely include Entebbe, Dar es Salaam and even Juba, again going head on with established full service and hybrid LCC's operating on some of those routes. After Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Zambia, where an AOC is due to be issued any time, will Kenya become Fastjet PLC's fourth African country with South Africa also still very much on the drawing boards.

FASTJET SECURES TRAFFIC RIGHTS TO THE COMOROS

(Posted 14th November 2015)

In a breaking news development was it confirmed yesterday that Fastjet, now Tanzania?s largest airline in terms of passengers uplifted, has secured traffic rights between Dar es Salaam and the Prince Said Ibrahim International Airport on the Comoros main island of Moroni.

Information sourced speaks of initially two flights per week between Tanzania and the Comoros, which will increase as demand for seats and cargo goes up.

This makes it Fastjet?s sixth African destination out of Dar es Salaam after Johannesburg, Lusaka, Harare, Entebbe and Lilongwe, while their application for landing rights in Nairobi continues to gather dust in the deepest dungeons of Kenya?s Civil Aviation Authority.

?Other countries want us to fly to their capitals? said a source close to the airline before adding ?Why the Kenyans do not want Fastjet to fly there remains a complete mystery. All prerequisite criteria have been met, all the boxes have long been ticked but it seems that the KCAA is now changing the size of these boxes and wants crosses instead of ticks? Are they for real? They are setting the worst possible example for the opening of the African airspaces. Have they ever heard of Yamoussoukro or the fact that Kenya signed on to the AU protocol about liberalizing air transport?. Their protectionism will come back to haunt them when TCAA again enforces the present BASA?.

Fastjet in Zambia is also reportedly now very close to attaining their Air Operator Certificate which will allow them to launch flight operations out of Lusaka, presently served daily in conjunction with Harare.

The Zimbabwean launch at the end of October proved highly successful with already over 3.500 seats sold on the route between Harare and Victoria Falls. Discussions with the CAAZ are reportedly continuing about adding Bulawayo and Johannesburg as next destinations, after Fly Africa continues to postpone their relaunch following their grounding by the CAAZ when their local partners handed in the airline?s AOC at the end of October. Sources close to the airline in Harare have confirmed that once the additional routes have been secured that an additional Airbus A319 aircraft will be deployed to Zimbabwe more or less immediately to have enough aircraft on the ground to serve the additional destinations.

Fastjet announces relaunch of Kilimanjaro – Nairobi flights

FIVE WEEKS AND COUNTING TO FASTJET’S RE-LAUNCH OF JRO TO NBO FLIGHTS

(Posted 02nd September 2016)

Tanzania’s leading jet airline, Fastjet, has announced a return to the Kilimanjaro to Nairobi route, effective 06th of October, i.e. just five weeks from now.
The information was published together with the new winter schedule effective between 31st of October to 26th of March 2017.
This will no doubt heat up competition again between Fastjet and both Kenya Airways and Precision Air, while under revival Air Tanzania has yet to come out and let the public know which regional routes it will fly when two new Bombardier turboprop aircraft of the Q400NG type have been delivered later this month.
There is now also growing speculation, after new CEO Nico Bezuidenhout has taken office just over a month ago, where in Africa he will move the headoffice of Fastjet, which until now has been based at London’s Gatwick Airport.
Another field of open speculation is the decision coming up about the fleet of Fastjet, as Bezuidenhout himself has fueled the topic with comments of the Airbus A319 not being right sized for many of the airline’s domestic and regional routes in Eastern and Southern Africa, where the carrier has a second operating unit in Zimbabwe.

Special offers on the Dar es Salaam to Nairobi route, which include two pieces of checked baggage, have also heated up competition on this crucial revenue earner for rival Kenya Airways but has reportedly helped Fastjet to raise load factors.
In a related development has no further information come to light about the status of Fastjet Kenya’s application process for an Air Operator Certificate, in short AOC, which is the final stage of launching operations in East Africa’s largest aviation market. Here, as elsewhere, are pundits watching closely as to the aircraft type Fastjet will introduce, when the final stage of the AOC audit, focusing on flight operations, will begin.
