1. I just want to remind you on "Who is a good writer?". In a nutshell, "a good writer is the one who can present complex subject in simple terms for the audience to understand". So, using sophisticated vocabularies is not always a good idea. And this is why, when we write, we do always ask this question; who are the audience?

2. About grammar; this is a global problem, regardless of whether you are a native speaker of English or not. No one can claim to be grammatically perfect. If you think you are perfect, take a test! Or submit your writing for publication or online so that we all can review it. And you will be floored that Dr. Shayo is the best among many.

Hili linahitaji ufafanuzi kabla ya kuaminiwa.Unamaanisha msaada wa kitaaluma,kifedha au....?LSBU inaweza kuwa sio among the top-tier universities in the UK,lakini taasisi za kitaaluma zinaongozwa na kanuni na taratibu.For the sake of an arguement,let's agree with you kwamba Dr Shayo alikuwa anawakimbia wanafunzi wanaohitaji msaada wa kitaaluma kwake (hii la msaada wa kitaaluma ni assumption yangu coz you never made it clear in your assertion).Ina maana baada ya wanafunzi hao kukimbiwa na Dr Shayo hawakulalamika kwa utawala wa Chuo?Na utawala wa chuo haukuchukua hatua yoyote kwa lecturer huyo?Talking of crap articles,this is an unbelievably and ridiculously crappy assertion.

He most certainly, is an academic, and has, in all likelihood, contributed more to Tanzania and the developing world through his academic research than you ever will in this lil JF world.. Mlalahoi na wapambe wa msomi wetu, by the way, mimi nina mentor aliyefanya PhD yake katika urefu wa kurasa 12 tu (makes you wonder huh!!?). Mpaka leo hii kazi yake ni template ya kila kitu kifanyikacho katika industry. Na kazi yake hiyo inakaribia miaka 40 na bado anaendeleza libeneke. So kila mtu na standards zake. We una wako wa kuenzi aka 'Dr.', na mimi nina wangu. Clearly we are on different pages.

Kwa vile ulishawahi kuongea nae,japo once,hiyo ndio ilikuwa nafasi mwafaka ya kumuuliza title ya PhD Thesis yake.I think this is the wrong place for that.Au namna gani vipi,hao wanafunzi wake (alowakimbia,allegedly) wanaweza kuwa na jibu zuri zaidi.

I will ignore all the assumptions you have made above in regards to dharau. It seems everything I type, I have to explain to you like a likkle kid. A doctor is like an engineer, they do practical things that work....etc. You wouldnt understand. Balali was with IMF or WorldBank, look where that has got Tanzania into. If Mwandosya or any Engineer gets his hands working, practical things are achieved. But when world markets are tumbling all over the world, it means Ecomomist are screwing up. Its a fact that is observed today. No bullsh.it, this is a fact we are experiencing right now, nothing to do with dharau.

Dude, how original is this?

- This is an MSc Project. Infact, a high school student can do this.

I wont bother reading the thesis, waste of time. There is still timber logging in Tanzania! This is what I call impractical reports. This thesis could have been done at the UDSM for the benefit of Tanzania. How has this benefitted the UK education system other than point to loopholes on how Africans can be further exploited?

Asante. Ndio swali linarudi mwanzoni kama GT alivyouliza. Kama mtu anaandika utumbo, basi inabidi kuangalia background ya qualification. Na kama PhD ni highest educational award, basi inabidi iwe original na iweze kutumika.

Sasa we soma title ya Thesis, imepatikana wapi, connect na article zinavyoandikwa. Kuna tofauti gani na honorary Doctorate wanazopewa wanasiasa? Do you want to tell me you need to do a 3-4 years reasearch just to figure out how the timber business works in Tanzania?

Kama mtu ameandika hypothesis zake, akafanya research kuzitest kama ziko valid au la, hiyo kazi yake ikawa reviewed na waliobobea kwenye hiyo fani, na wakampa udaktari wa falsafa, wewe kama wewe huna haki hata siku moja ya kuidisqualify. Sana sana utai-rate tu. Na rating ya kazi zinatofautiana kati ya mtu na mtu, reviewer na reviewer, candidate na candidate.

Kusema hayo, huna haki ya kudiscuss kazi ya mtu kuwa ni mbaya wakati hujaisoma! Na kama umeisoma basi weka hapa hizo weakness ulizoziona na sio bla bla bla, speculations na kufanya incomparable comparisons.

To quote one supervisor, also a head of department and professor in a highly prestigious university, "There is no such thing as truly original work in doctoral theses these days"...institutions do require originality in a doctoral thesis and examiners are supposed to look for it. So it would seem that a good approach is to encourage students to aim for a thesis which conforms to the norms of the discipline but which includes whatever 'originality' supervisors think students can manage, both in the time available and in terms of being readily acceptable to examiners.

The question remains of how 'original' work has to be to claim 'originality'. One answer is that 'originality' can be equated to 'publishability', ie that work can be deemed to have 'originality' if it would be worthy of publication when appropriately presented, irrespective of whether it does in fact ever reach publication. The following table may stimulate further thinking. It suggests common components of fairly routine work, which, when emphasised and appropriately supported and argued, could claim 'originality'.

Some criteria which may merit 'originality'

-Developing a new product or an improvement on an existing one

-Developing a new theory (very rare in doctoral research)

-Reinterpreting an existing theory, possibly in a new context

Developing a new research tool or technique

-Developing a new model or perspective

-Conducting an in-depth study on something not previously known or investigated fully

-Producing a critical analysis of something not previously known or investigated fully

-Developing a portfolio of work based on research

-Developing a collection of generalisable findings or conclusions on something not previously known or investigated fully.

If supervisors do decide to encourage students to aim for highly original work, it is a good idea to require them, in addition, to devise a more conforming fallback position, based on the same general work, so that they can still complete to time if the highly original work should fail to materialise satisfactorily.

Either you are joking or you have no idea how PhDs are examined. A couple of educative points:

i) You cannot determine the originality of a PhD thesis on the basis of its title. I have all along wondered why you were insisting to know the title of Dr Shayo's thesis. Now I know you wanted to examine how original his PhD was on the basis of the title of the thesis!! My friend, I wish it were that simple, but you simply can't!!

ii) There are well established rigorous procedures to examine a PhD. You can't judge the authenticity of some body's PhD by simply reading his/her article posted on a discussion forum like this or Michuzi's. By concluding that Dr Shayo's PhD is doubtable, on the basis of the article he wrote for Michuzi's website and the title of his PhD thesis, you are insulting the examiners of his PhD, the University he attended and indeed, the academia in general. You have no authority to do this, and your malicious unshameful falacy is uncalled for and hence hereby scorned

iii) You could have criticised Dr Shayo's article without trying to undermine his PhD qualification, which was awarded by a competent authority. You have no authority whatsover to undermine and ridicule some body's academic qualification which has been awarded by a recognised competent authority.

iv) You seem to think and assume that if you have a PhD you know everything in your area. This is an arogant display of ignorance on your part. It is not true. A PhD is simply an academic qualification, and, though it is obviously higher in scope and depth than a Bachelor's and a Master's degree, does not make the holder a super knower, leave alone a perfect person!!

You should probably learn to criticise people's academic works in a civilised manner. You have obviously abused your use of anonymity in this forum to embarrass Dr Shayo. This is uncalled for and I hope you will refrain from doing the same in future.

Now to proceed with the discussion, hopeful with no more innuendos to Dr Shayo's academic qualification, can you please point out the flaws in his article?
