Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, Hon. Ashatu Kijaji, conducted a tour to visit some sugar factories and visited a factory located in the Manyara region where she found that production had been halted due to a lack of raw materials for sugar production.
During her visit, the Minister stated that there is no shortage of sugar in the country but rather a deficit, as there is still sufficient sugar stored in warehouses. She announced that they will assess why the price of sugar has risen to 4000 while the prices in all factories have remained unchanged.
The Minister assured that they will release all the sugar from the warehouses as there is sufficient sugar in the country. She also mentioned that the heavy rainfall has affected sugar production in some factories, including the one in Moshi.
Questions arise from the public concerning the sugar situation: If there is sufficient sugar in the country, why has the price doubled? If the factory prices remain unchanged, why has the street price risen? Does the Minister acknowledge that sugar prices have reached 4500 in some areas?
