'FIFA HAVE 'CALLED' FOR THE PREMIER LEAGUE SEASON TO BE CANCELLED

A high-ranking FIFA medical expert is calling for the Premier League season to be cancelled.

FIFA Council and Chairman medical chief Michel D'Hooghe has insisted football should not resume till September due to the coronavirus pandemic.

His comments are a blow to any fans hoping for a restart in the next few months, with the emphasis shifting to next season.

"The world is not ready for competitive football," D'Hooghe told Sky Sports News per The Independent.

"I hope this can change very quickly and I sincerely hope that. Today you need more patience.

"Football can only be possible if contact is possible again. Football remains a contact sport and contact is one of the first things everyone says that you should avoid.

"If they could start 2020-21 in September they could eventually avoid a second attack from the virus.

"It's still about social distancing. Testing is an important point but you have to repeat them (tests). If one of the players becomes positive, you have to put the whole group into quarantine. Is that a solution for a normal competition?

"We do not know when it will reach its peak in different countries, it will be different in every country. The solution will only be there the day there is an adequate vaccination programme."

The news came on Tuesday, the same day France announced all suspension of sporting events until September, effectively ending the Ligue 1 season.

D'Hooghe also stressed the virus should not be brushed aside and that it's as 'dramatic' as World War II.

"It is a terrible responsibility at the moment - the most dramatic situation we have lived in since the Second World War," he stated according to The Sun.

"You cannot play in the Premier League when players have to remain two metres apart.

"Have you tried playing football in a mask? This does not avoid social distancing. Players are together on the field, in the dressing room.

"Of course, you could say, 'Let's play behind closed doors'.

"But even then, you will see groups of fans coming secretly together in rooms just to support their team anyway.

"Testing is such an important point - but you have to repeat them.

"If one of the players becomes positive, you have to put the whole group into quarantine.

"Is that a solution for a normal competition? Football has to be patient. It has to listen to the authorities and respect the basic health rules."

Do you think the Premier League season will be finished?

Jaap Stam on Kokcu to Arsenal:

'He has creativity, scoring ability, stamina and running ability. He keeps on going. I saw him as a very promising player. The only thing he needs to work a little more on is the defensive part of his game.' [@goal]

When we played with one holding midfielder, he was one of the two who played little bit higher up the pitch,” said Stam. But he can play as No.10 or he can play as a LM player. Sometimes he can drop in deep as well to get the ball forward to link up the play with strikers.

Barça, Lyon, United, Borussia, Zaragoza and Valladolid have been interested in his situation.

But at the moment, Arsenal is the club that has put the most effort into signing. Arteta, who has seen him in several live matches, is his great supporter.

Thomas Partey has informed Atletico that he would like to move to Arsenal and is hoping a deal can be struck between the clubs. [@mcgrathmike]

Going to be 4 seasons without CL, we have a young coach who is in his first job and are at the start of a new project. Yet, one of the best defensive midfielders in the world who plays for a Champions league club wants to join us. Arsenal FC truly gargantuan institution.

The Telegraph say Thomas Partey has made it clear he would like to move to Arsenal & is hoping a deal can be struck between the clubs. The player has told those close to him he has ambitions of proving himself in the Premier League with a move to #Arsenal.

Partey/Laca swap deal is a very good deal for both Arsenal & Atletico. (For Arsenal its a good deal if Auba stays).

Gabriel & Eddie can fill the Laca gap next season but Auba is has to stay no doubt for us to let Laca go. No money in the summer will make things complicated

FOUR OUT-OF-CONTRACT PLAYERS ARSENAL COULD SIGN FOR FREE THIS SUMMER

Ryan Fraser

The Scotland international's contract with Bournemouth runs out this summer, and at 26, Fraser is much younger than the typical Premier League player you'd look to pick up on a free transfer.

Fraser has been linked with Arsenal over multiple windows now, but a move never materialised. His timing may be a little flawed in that the coronavirus shutdown will impact his chances of picking up a top-dollar contract offer, but plenty of clubs would view Fraser as a valuable addition - particularly with transfer budgets being slashed across the board.

The 2019/20 season has not been a stellar one for Fraser with a goal and four assists to his name, but given his age, potential, proven Premier League ability and the fact that he will not cost the earth in terms of wages, the Scot looks a wise addition as Arsenal contemplate a possible midfield reshuffle this summer.

Fraser is most comfortable on the left flank, but can also play out on the right - and that versatility would make him, at the very least, a valuable bench option for Arteta.

Layvin Kurzawa

PSG full-back Kurzawa has been on Arsenal's radar for a while now, and at 27, he is another player with a good few years of top-level football left in him.

The France international has won four Ligue 1 titles since moving to Paris in 2015, but could be on the move with game-time limited behind Juan Bernat.

Kurzawa would offer Arteta's squad title-winning experience, and also potentially give the club a boost in contract negotiations with Bukayo Saka.

Adam Lallana

Leaving a club who recently won the Champions League and look set to lift the Premier League title for a side who are struggling to qualify for the Europa League may, on the face of it, seem a non-starter.

However, Lallana has struggled to hold down a regular place in Jurgen Klopp's all-conquering Liverpool side, with a combination of injuries and talented team-mates leaving Lallana on the sidelines for a while now.

Lallana is widely expected to leave Anfield this summer, and at 31, this will likely be his last major move. Despite his injury issues, Lallana will be of interest to plenty of clubs.

Lallana has plenty of ability on the ball, and would slot well into Arteta's high-tempo, passing and pressing style of football. If he can stay fit - and that's a big if - Lallana could quickly prove himself to be a valuable top-flight player again.

The question is, whether Arsenal have the sort of funds available to take a calculated risk with a contract offer that could rival Leicester.

Willian

The situation for the Brazilian and Chelsea is clearer than it seems. Willian wants a three-year deal; Chelsea are only offering a two-year contract.

Willian is happy in London, so it appears as though he'll be staying in the capital - even if it's not with Chelsea. That narrows the options to either Arsenal or Tottenham.

Spurs looks the natural fit given Willian's strong relationship with Mourinho, but no deals are a sure thing yet for Arsenal's neighbours. While the odds are on Spurs signing Willian, Arsenal are, at the very least, in the running if they make the 31-year-old an offer.

The fact that David Luiz swapped Stamford Bridge for the Emirates last summer also counts in Arsenal's favour, while the presence of Gabriel Martinelli could tempt Willian into joining a growing Brazilian contingent at London Colney - particularly if Copa Libertadores winner Pablo Mari also makes his loan move permanent.

There is little that needs to be said in regards to Willian's ability: he has won nearly everything at Chelsea, keeps himself in excellent shape, is a fine role model for younger players, and offers versatility on the flanks - along with a genuine threat from set-pieces.
