Advanced set top boxes on the way - News - nation.co.ke

The country's three leading media houses are set to launch 150,000 advanced set top boxes in the next three weeks. The enhanced set top boxes will be provided by Nation Media Group (NMG), Standard Group (SG) and Royal Media Services (RMS) in the first phase of a plan that will see them import a million more devices by the end of March, 2015.

4G signals will be used by mobile networks to transmit higher quality phone and video calls but, more importantly, the newly designated frequencies will become a highway for the enormous amounts of mobile
data which are now being consumed on a daily basis. The space on the airwaves for 4G mobile broadband has come from the great analogue TV switch off, which ran on the 800 MHz band. DTT runs on a frequency band which is right next to and slightly overlaps with the 800 MHz band earmarked for 4G. Problems are likely to arise for people living in the vicinity of a future 4G mobile mast. Those in the immediate area, around 30,000 according to Ofcom estimates, will be in the 'Overload Zone' and are likely to have to resort to satellite TV services
Such filters were reviewed in the January 2015 issue of TELE-audiovision-1501 magazine.
You can read the review on page 28 of the magazine, but if you are too lazy to download the whole magazine,
I have extracted the article in pdf and attached it here below in this post. Enjoy !.
I recommend that you read the magazine more regularly as it has some latest innovations for ASAS victims.
A quote from the review:

"As the 4G mobile communication is becoming more
and more common today all over the world, LTE data
transmission may sometimes interfere with normal
digital terrestrial TV reception. LTE channels are located
in the frequency spectrum just above terrestrial
TV channels. You may encounter such interference in
the form of a loss of sound, blocky or pixelated images
or loss of some channels. These symptoms might be
experienced occasionally or all of the time."

Keyans shud b worried ie those not hooked to FTA.... My look is that the media houses will pull out their transmissions on the other platforms once they rollout their infrastructure... Scrabble their frequencies so we have to pay for to view them ie taarifa ya habari lol.....that's y the government was trying to prevent when the media houses tried to apply for their own digital licences....let's watch this space n wait

FTA rules 🙂

That what in their mind but they must adhere to rules and regulations about fta otherwise yhis decoder they want to rollout is irrelevant unless they obtain paytv licence

Sounds like hype to me(Of course reported in one of their newspapers!). Everyone in this forum knows how advanced an stb can get presently(HD, PVR,.... etc); and these are already in the market. Seems like my earlier fears are about to be confirmed- a segmented market with every shade of local broadcaster launching its stb, purportedly free at the start, and later introducing a card for which a nominal monthly fee is levied. The prevailing notion being that the digital migration heralds a windfall for every broadcaster, little wonder then that everybody is angling for a piece of the pie.

Who’s who between Communications
Authority of Kenya and Competition
Authority of Kenya?
So, today, Daily Nation decided to lead
the back page with the news that the
three media houses that run KTN,
Citizen and NTV will be importing over
1 million of their own set top boxes to
retail at about Sh2500 by end of
March.
150,000 of them will be launched
within this month.
It sounds like big news and indeed,
occupies a prominent space in the
paper until, wait, haven’t there been set
top boxes being sold in the country on
the streets, shops, supermarkets
everywhere?
Yes, but belonging to Multichoice GOTV,
Startimes and independent set top box
vendors.
So, why is DN packaging its plans as big
news?
Precisely because acting against the
spirit and letter of the Kenya
Communications Amendment Act (2009)
as well as other Restrictive Trading
countermeasures, the three outlets have
been stifling information about the
existence of other players in the digital
migration field even as they seek to tie
up digital migration in court.
In the meantime, they are importing
their own equipment and planning to
use their platforms to exclusion of
others to market themselves.
This is illegal.
The Communications Authority of Kenya
must begin to enforce the regulations
and demand that these media houses,
accord the same amount of fair
coverage to all players in the digital
migration arena or risk losing their
signal distribution license.
Licenses must come with terms and
conditions and one of those should be
that you cannot use existing licenses to
unfairly black out competition.
So far both the regulator and the other
players have been very tolerating of this
consortium but it should be clear to
them that it doesn’t mean that they
cannot be held up in the same courts of
law they are using.
Other Free to Air channels like Kiss,
K24, Family, GBS etc can contest the
award of the signal distribution license
to a cartel that has shown it is willing
to abuse its market power to retain
market share.
Vertical integration of media houses : -
TV, Radio, Newspaper can also be
challenged to enforce fair competition
not to have the newspapers be used by
their owners to advertise the
consortium’s set top boxes while
refusing to carry adverts for rivals
platforms like GoTV or Bamba TV?
Both the Competition Authority and the
CAK have a responsibility to speak up
on this issue.
Cofek, in the meantime after wreaking
havoc in the migration process in 2013,
have been unusually quiet in the face of
very anti-consumer behaviour by the
three media houses.

I have been in logger head with this media on constantly demanding to know their obsessive demands abt these licences while all needed is their signal transmited fta....i sensed rat and here it is

Assume that be the case, isn't this against the regulations? What's the regulator saying/doing about this? Again aren't running the risk of their plan becoming counterproductive by consumers declining to pay or even buy their stbs? I have a feeling this action will harm than benefit the mwananchi. Personally I know if they discontinue broadcast on the existing platforms then it will be kwaheri to them. I won't miss a lot if the current content is anything to go by.

What did you just say? Pay to watch their news? What news? If that's what they've in mind, sorry. Not me. Let us wait and see.

don't see why the 3 local channels will charge viewers for news or their content.citizen, ktn, ntv will have different channels along with the news and entertainment to win viewers.times group ltd that rides with bamba stb has a smart card for future premium pay channels.startimes and gotv should be offering local channels for free without charges regardless of an active subscription be it dtt or (zuku or dstv) satelite transmission.ca and cofek have failed kenyans they should be protecting consumers and highliting the major issues but all they say is that one will only view for two weeks after expiring which is not the case.startimes and gotv still block the signal if you have an inactive subscription.

the
set-top box the three will sell comes internet enabled,
not sure whether this means ethernet port or Wifi card
on-board. The article also does not reveal what comes
on board the low priced set-top box so at this point we
do not know what compromises it comes with or
whether they will choose to subsidize the product to
arrive at the Kshs 2000 price.

Interesting seems like the 3 musketeers are very serious. Do a scan on your stb or digital TV and you will see they have a freq with the name ADN hosting qtv, ktn, ntv and citizen tv

There were loud whispers last week that they intend to, in future, provide internet via those STBs. Hence the 'advanced' part of the description.
